Cork Premier SHC: Muskerry have too much firepower for UCC
Cork Premier SHC Divisions/Colleges semi-final: Muskerry 4-15 UCC 0-21 Muskerry had too much firepower for UCC in a low-key Co Op Superstores Divisions/Colleges Senior hurling championship semi-final at Riverstown on Sunday. The winners led by the inspirational Aghabullogue talisman Matthew Bradley who finished the evening with a 1-9 tally had too much pace and firepower for the students' defence. UCC have been competitive in the Cork senior hurling championship for many years and won the title in 1963 and 1970. Coincidentally, the last time they won the championship in 1970 they defeated Muskerry 2-12 to 0-15 in a game that was played at the old Athletic Grounds. It was the first time that Muskerry competed in the Cork final and they were denied the elusive double as they won the football equivalent in that year. Over the years the Cork college have had notable players like Joe Deane, James 'Cha' Fitzpatrick, Ray Cummins, Nicky English and Tommy Walsh don the jersey. The also have 43 Fitzgibbon titles at university level but in recent years they have struggled to make an impression in the top tier of Cork hurling. It only took Muskerry 30 seconds to open proceedings courtesy of a classy James Foley point. The students were soon back on parity, but they were stunned into submission in the third minute with a superb Muskerry goal. Colm O'Callaghan gathered the ball 40 yards from goal as he showed incredible pace before unleashing an unstoppable shot to the corner of the net. UCC looked useful going forward and three consecutive points brought the minimum between the teams in the 12th minute. Credit to Muskerry, they responded in style and once again it was O'Callaghan who showed tremendous pace and craft to assist a pinpoint pass to James Lane who placed the ball to the empty net. At times UCC played some free-flowing hurling but they lacked a cutting edge in front of goal. The college half-forward Mark Mahony from the Waterford club An Rinn had a great goal opportunity but he placed his shot to the side netting. In truth Muskerry forwards were moving far quicker as the UCC defence were struggling to restrict them. In the closing minutes Bradley and O'Callaghan continued to cause the students' defence havoc with their movement and it was no surprise the divisional side went in at the break commanding a seven-point lead - 2-10 to 0-9. UCC, helped by some classy play from Fionn Desmond, gave themselves a lift as he drilled over consecutive points and was unlucky not to raise a green flag but his goal attempt was superbly saved by the Muskerry keeper. On the rare occasion UCC threatened a mini-revival, Muskerry responded in style and two more goals from James Foley and Bradley well and truly killed off the tame students' challenge. Cork chiefs hopeful Páirc Uí Rinn will be available in coming weeks
The Cork County Board are hoping Páirc Uí Rinn will be available to host hurling championship games the weekend after next, following the decision to move this weekend's divisional/college hurling semi-finals. The Ballintemple venue was deemed unavailable by the county's competitions control committee for the Imokilly-Avondhu and UCC-Muskerry games as the pitch is underdoing some remedial work. While several first round Premier Senior and Senior A hurling championship games took place there over the Bank Holiday weekend, the Nemo Rangers-Ballincollig PSFC Group 3 opening round clash at the end of last month was switched to Ballygarvan, having been originally scheduled for Páirc Uí Rinn. The playing surface was heavily sanded in early July. The venue has no irrigation system and in the current dry spell a lot of the sediment has not yet been absorbed by the soil. The field has also required some repair work following the installation of a new catching net behind the City End goalposts and the removal of trees. Apart from club activity, Páirc Uí Rinn is one of the most heavily-used fields by inter-county teams such as the senior footballers and hurlers who alternate between there, MTU and SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh. As things stand, it is due to stage Blackrock-St Finbarrs on Friday week, Midleton-Newcestown and Erins Own-Sarsfields the day after as well as two lower grade matches on Sunday week. As is the norm, Páirc Uí Chaoimh's playing surface is currently in the process of being relaid in time to host games at the business end of the championships in October. The semi-finals in both codes are scheduled for the weekends of October 4/5 and October 11/12. The work on the pitches was mentioned in the bulletin following Tuesday's county committee meeting. It read: 'Given the lack of rainfall over the past few weeks, Groundsman, Colm Daly was thanked for his ongoing work in both SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh and Páirc Uí Rinn to have them ready to host many club fixtures recently and in the coming weeks.' Meanwhile, the Gaelic Players Association (GPA) and GAA have yet to sign off on a new protocol despite negotiations having begun last October. The previous funding agreement between the parties has been extended into this year as had happened before in 2020 when talks, described by the GPA as 'intense and prolonged', were partly delayed by the pandemic and took a year and a half to conclude. There have again been a number of stumbling blocks in the recent discussions, although a deal is expected to be signed off by Central Council and the GPA's national executive in the coming months. The GPA had raised image rights as a subject with the GAA. Last year, Clare's 2024 hurler of the year Shane O'Donnell took exception to his image being used in the promotion of the since rebranded GAAGO. The previous GAA-GPA deal maintained the 2017-19 agreement that the GPA would receive 15% share of the GAA's net commercial income. However for the most recently elapsed deal the minimum of €2.5 million was removed, while the GPA's administrative costs were cut from 25% to 20% of the GAA's funding. Last year, the GPA received €3.17m in core funding from the GAA, an increase from the €2.9m figure in 2023. Elsewhere, the GAA's national head of hurling William Maher is to travel to The Netherlands in October. The Ballingarry man, who was appointed to the position earlier this year, will give a presentation in Eindhoven to coincide with the Pan-European hurling and camogie finals taking place in the city. Maher is to outline the current hurling landscape, strategic priorities for 2025 to '30, and key initiatives aimed at supporting the growth of hurling. He will be joined by Chris Collins, head of operations of Gaelic Games Europe, and Shauna Coen, and Gaelic Games camogie officer for Europe.

1995 Banteer hurler reunion A reunion for the winning 1995 Banteer Junior Hurlers takes place on Friday 29th August at 8.30pm at the Glen Theatre. The Banteer team won the Duhallow hurling title after an absence of 38 years with the previous title being won in 1957 when Banteer hurlers won the 3 in a row. It is hoped that all of the 1995 team will attend on the night and tickets are available now at 10e each for anyone who wishes to attend and tickets must be bought beforehand. Light refreshments will be provided on the night and old videos will also be shown of the match and social from that year. Sportsfield appeal rates decision Taillte Ireland has proposed property rates on the new Sportsfield facility which has a community café, community museum and a community digital hub/meeting room. The local community group is contesting this proposal with the support of local public representatives and have requested that no rates be applied. This facility is community built, community owned and community operated. Any extra income is put back into additional community facilities at the centre. The community has had to raise over 650k via local fundraising, a bank loan, company sponsorship, selling tickets etc to complete the recent 2.2M community project. Over 300k of this total 2.2M expenditure alone was also paid in Vat payments to our Government for the construction of this project. This project also helps to improve the social isolation for our community as it's now a meeting point since we now have no shop or post office left in Banteer village. The whole facility is run with the assistance of volunteers from our community ADVERTISEMENT Any excess income generated is poured back into paying off our loan and into the maintenance of the existing facilities as well as development of additional facilities for our community. The Valuation Act maintains the long-standing position that all properties of occupiers that operate with the intention of making a profit are ratable, so the opposite should then apply in our case i.e. all properties of occupiers that operate as not for profit should not be ratable. In the Sportsfield the community café, community museum and community digital hub/meeting room activities and all the other facilities are all not for profit and are conducted to fund the rate exempt activity on land developed for sport and recreation including outdoor surfaces, football pitches,walks,playgrounds etc. The community not-for-profit sector plays a vital role in Irish society and community facilities such as ours are a very important element of a sustainable Rural Ireland. To reinforce our appeal all our activities are purely not for profit and the group have also surveyed many other similar community facilities in Cork County and ALL of these are not paying rates. Lyre Junior A Football Lyre enjoyed a well deserved win at the start of their 2025 Junior Football C'ship campaign with a victory over Lismire at Tullylease on Saturday evening last. Played in ideal conditions Lyre were disappointingly slow to get out of the scoring traps trailing 0-3 to 0-0 after 10 minutes. Eventually the men in white & black found their scoring range though hitting four points without reply through the boots of Alan Coughlan (3) & Cathal O' Donoghue to lead 0-4 to 0-3 after 18 minutes. Both teams exchanged pointed frees before an excellent move in the 23rd minute involving Ruairi O' Connell, Liam O' Brien & O' Donoghue saw the latter under pressure curl the ball into the top left hand corner of the Lismire goal to give Lyre a 1-5 to 0-4 double scores lead. Lismire narrowed the divide with a brace of points before two more Coughlan frees saw Lyre out in front 1-7 to 0-6 at the short whistle. The second half saw Lyre continue where they left off scoring four points without reply through Coughlan (3) & an O' Connell effort from distance. Such was the dominance of the Lyre defense Lismire failed to score until the 48th minute of the second half. However an O' Donoghue two pointer along with points from Coughlan & substitute Jack Finnegan boosted the Lyre cause. Lyre were also grateful to net minder Luke Philpott on making a point blank save on 55 minutes to deny Lismire a certain goal. However the men in yellow & black did receive a lifeline on 59 minutes with an excellently converted penalty reducing the divide between the sides, the score now 1-15 to 1-7. Both teams again exchanged points one last time but it was always going to be Lyres day & a victory with a margin of eight points, 1-16 to 1-8, did not flatter the winners. Work will start on these projects in the next month. Banteer Bingo Bingo is played at Banteer Community Centre on Tuesday night at 8.30pm, playing for jackpot of €3,000. EV charging at Sportsfield/Park Banteer Community Sportsfield/Park have submitted a grant application for the installation of a 150kw fast EV charger in the carpark across from the Park. This entender grant scheme by TLI is to provide 6 fast chargers on or within 3km of the N72 Fermoy to Killarney road. Lismire Football Championship Lismire footballers went under to Lyre in the first round of the Ashgrove Renewables Junior Football Championship last Saturday evening in Tullylease. Their inability to fully grasp the new rules with the ball being advanced on numerous occasions to point scoring opportunities for the opposition was a key factor in their downfall. That coupled with inaccurate shooting led Lyre to a 1.16 to 1.08 victory. Match report in sports pages.
