Cork Premier SHC: Muskerry have too much firepower for UCC
Cork Premier SHC Divisions/Colleges semi-final: Muskerry 4-15 UCC 0-21 Muskerry had too much firepower for UCC in a low-key Co Op Superstores Divisions/Colleges Senior hurling championship semi-final at Riverstown on Sunday. The winners led by the inspirational Aghabullogue talisman Matthew Bradley who finished the evening with a 1-9 tally had too much pace and firepower for the students' defence. UCC have been competitive in the Cork senior hurling championship for many years and won the title in 1963 and 1970. Coincidentally, the last time they won the championship in 1970 they defeated Muskerry 2-12 to 0-15 in a game that was played at the old Athletic Grounds. It was the first time that Muskerry competed in the Cork final and they were denied the elusive double as they won the football equivalent in that year. Over the years the Cork college have had notable players like Joe Deane, James 'Cha' Fitzpatrick, Ray Cummins, Nicky English and Tommy Walsh don the jersey. The also have 43 Fitzgibbon titles at university level but in recent years they have struggled to make an impression in the top tier of Cork hurling. It only took Muskerry 30 seconds to open proceedings courtesy of a classy James Foley point. The students were soon back on parity, but they were stunned into submission in the third minute with a superb Muskerry goal. Colm O'Callaghan gathered the ball 40 yards from goal as he showed incredible pace before unleashing an unstoppable shot to the corner of the net. UCC looked useful going forward and three consecutive points brought the minimum between the teams in the 12th minute. Credit to Muskerry, they responded in style and once again it was O'Callaghan who showed tremendous pace and craft to assist a pinpoint pass to James Lane who placed the ball to the empty net. At times UCC played some free-flowing hurling but they lacked a cutting edge in front of goal. The college half-forward Mark Mahony from the Waterford club An Rinn had a great goal opportunity but he placed his shot to the side netting. In truth Muskerry forwards were moving far quicker as the UCC defence were struggling to restrict them. In the closing minutes Bradley and O'Callaghan continued to cause the students' defence havoc with their movement and it was no surprise the divisional side went in at the break commanding a seven-point lead - 2-10 to 0-9. UCC, helped by some classy play from Fionn Desmond, gave themselves a lift as he drilled over consecutive points and was unlucky not to raise a green flag but his goal attempt was superbly saved by the Muskerry keeper. On the rare occasion UCC threatened a mini-revival, Muskerry responded in style and two more goals from James Foley and Bradley well and truly killed off the tame students' challenge. First-half goal burst earns Duhallow Divisions/Colleges SFC honours
Divisions/Colleges SFC final: Duhallow 4-9 Muskerry 0-13 Duhallow struck three goals before half-time and never once loosened their grip on a final that offered Muskerry little comfort and fewer chances. Their 4-9 to 0-13 win in Ballydesmond on Tuesday evening delivered a Divisions/Colleges SFC title, and a path to the Cork PSFC quarter-final. By the time Luke Murphy had clipped over his third point inside six minutes, and Donncha O'Connor added a 45 soon after, Duhallow were well in the groove. Two more from Murphy pushed the gap out to 0-6 to 0-1 by the quarter-hour. Muskerry responded through a Liam O'Connor free and another from Chris Óg Jones, but Duhallow had found their rhythm — and soon found the net. The first goal came after 23 minutes, Darragh Cashman bursting through from wing-back and drilling low to the net. The Cork senior finished with 1-1. Muskerry pulled one back but were immediately hit again — this time a flowing team move involving Hickey, O'Connor and Conor O'Callaghan finished off by Gerry O'Sullivan. Muskerry's second point from play arrived close to half-time, but they were rocked again before the break when Jack Curtin smashed home a third Duhallow goal. The first score after the restart came on 42 minutes, as Chris Óg Jones was set up by Ian Jones, but Duhallow responded instantly via Donncha O'Connor. Even after Seamus Hickey was shown a black card, Muskerry couldn't capitalise, managing just one point while Duhallow, again, found an answer. Darragh O'Leary did produce a superb two-pointer late on, and Liam O'Connor added another from a tight angle in the 64th minute – but any hope of a comeback was dashed almost immediately. From the resulting restart, Hickey led a rapid counter and teed up Murphy, who finished with power to bag Duhallow's fourth goal and seal a commanding win. Cork SFC: Duhallow aiming to reclaim colleges/divisional crown from Muskerry
Muskerry staved off a stirring second-half comeback by Duhallow in last year's final for the Tadhg Crowley Cup Holders Muskerry face Duhallow in an eagerly awaited McCarthy Insurance Group (Divisional/Colleges) Co. SFC Final at Ballydesmond this Tuesday evening, July 15, with a 7.30pm throw in. Last season, Duhallow relented their hold of the title, Muskerry staving off a determined second half fightback. The Mid Cork combination laid the groundwork in the opening 25 minutes, performing with power, pace and intensity, netting three goals to jump 12 points ahead, the attacking flair mirrored Muskerry's clear superiority.

Muskerry in seventh heaven as hat-trick hero Chris Óg Jones produces the goods
Muskerry 7-11 Carbery 1-18 Cork star Chris Óg Jones landed 3-3 as Muskerry's goalscoring ability was crucial in getting past the Carbery challenge in Tuesday's McCarthy Insurance Group Premier SFC clash at Castletownkennigh. The Mid-Cork division will face Duhallow next week with a place in the quarter-finals of the championship proper at stake, and they stayed on course to retain the Tadhg Crowley Cup thanks to their green-flag fever. In the second minute of the second half, Muskerry midfielder Cillian O'Donovan capped a gallop through the middle with a finish to the net that did not lack panache - it put his side 3-3 to 0-11 in front and a point from Cork star Chris Óg Jones extended the lead. Carbery might have hit the front again as Aaron Hayes set up Olan Corcoran for a goal chance but Joe Creedon kept that out and Muskerry compounded matters by claiming a fourth goal immediately after. Corner-back William Ronan was the chief architect as Chris Óg Jones raised his second green flag and the county man's second point made it 4-5 to 0-11 with 37 minutes on the clock. Frees from Damien Gore and some nice scores by Olan O'Donovan allowed Carbery to hold pace for a time after that and the latter's fourth point left four in it, 4-9 to 0-17, with four minutes left. Muskerry made sure of things as Alan Quinn scored a fine individual goal and then Paul Ring's pass allowed Liam O'Connor to make it six. Olan O'Donovan did register a late Carbery goal – he finished with 1-5 – but Chris Óg Jones had the final say at the death, his deflected shot sneaking in. Carbery had had whatever breeze was there in the first half but it was not a material factor in them making much of the early running. They had an early 0-4 to 0-1 lead, though Quinn would have a Muskerry goal but for a Damien O'Sullivan save. Ryan O'Donovan extended the Carbery advantage in the wake of the goal chance before another one afforded Muskerry a way back into contention. Wing-back Seán O'Leary's driving run was the catalyst and he exchanged passes with Chris Óg Jones to give Quinn another opportunity. While O'Sullivan saved again, the wing-forward was being fouled as he shot and a penalty was awarded. Chris Óg Jones made no mistake from the spot and though Carbery responded with scores from Olan Corcoran (two-pointer) and the impressive Seán Daly to move 0-8 to 1-1 ahead again, Muskerry found a purple patch as half-time approached. They had a second goal when Daragh Ó Laoire' point attempt came back off the post and Ian Jones reacted well to claim the rebound and fire home; that was augmented with points from Liam O'Connor and Ó Laoire as they seized the lead for the first time, 2-3 to 0-9. However, Damien Gore's two-pointer sent Carbery in with the lead and Keith O'Driscoll extended the advantage on the restart. It was the last time they led, though.
