
Climate change is hitting Egypt, with record high temperatures and scarce rain: Climate professor
European Union researchers have announced that January recorded the highest average temperatures since records began.
This comes amid a continued trend of unprecedented global temperatures, reflecting the growing impact of global warming on planet Earth.
According to the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service, January 2025 continued a series of months with exceptional temperatures.
The service's monthly bulletin indicated that 18 of the last 19 months have seen global temperatures exceed pre-industrial levels by more than 1.5 degrees Celsius.
The average global temperature in January increased by 1.75 degrees Celsius compared to the pre-industrial era, raising concerns about the worsening global warming phenomenon.
A climate professor at the Zagazig University, Ali Qutub, revealed that the world is facing ongoing climate changes, with temperatures rising at an unprecedented rate, impacting ecosystems and climates in various countries.
He explained that each month of the year has climatic averages that include temperatures, rainfall amounts, and weather phenomena; however, these averages differ from one country to another based on geographic location and proximity to water.
Egypt not spared from climate change
In exclusive statements to Al-Masry Al-Youm, he explained that climate change has led to a global rise in temperatures – and Egypt is no exception.
It was originally expected that the average maximum temperature in Cairo during January would be around 17C but records from the Egyptian Meteorological Authority showed that the actual average was between 20-21C Celsius on most days of the month.
Additionally, the minimum temperatures recorded at dawn were higher than their normal rates by about three to four degrees Celsius.
He added that the increase in temperatures has even impacted rainfall rates with Egypt and most North African countries, except for the Maghreb and some Gulf countries, have experienced a scarcity of rain.
He pointed out that the continued rise in Earth's temperature leads to increased evaporation of water from seas and oceans, resulting in greater amounts of rain over these water bodies and consequently causing flooding on the coasts, a;; while the chances of rain on land decrease.
A warming world
The climate professor confirmed that the main reason for the worsening climate crisis is the stubbornness of major industrialized countries and their refusal to reduce carbon emissions, noting that US President Donald Trump withdrew from the Paris Climate Agreement in 2015 and showed a lack of commitment to the recommendations of the COP29 climate conference in Azerbaijan.
This comes from the insistence of major countries to continue using fossil fuels, leading to the exacerbation of global warming.
A climate professor explained that the Eastern Mediterranean region is usually affected by 12 to 13 weather depressions during the winter season; however, this year the region experienced significantly fewer depressions, which impacted rainfall rates. This reflects the increasing influence of climate change on weather patterns in the area.
Climate scientists previously indicated that 2024 would be the first full year in which global temperatures exceed the 1.5 degrees Celsius threshold above pre-industrial levels. The Copernicus service confirmed this assessment, warning that climate change is pushing Earth's temperatures to unprecedented levels in modern times, which could signal serious environmental consequences in the near and distant future.
This also comes after 2023 was classified as the hottest year on Earth in global records dating back to 1850, due to climate change caused by human activities and the El Niño weather phenomenon, which sees surface water temperatures in the eastern Pacific Ocean rise.

Experts, MPs, call on state to take warnings of Alexandria sinking seriously
The severe storm that struck Alexandria Governorate on Saturday early morning renewed the concerns of many public affairs experts and experts at the National Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries (NIOF). These concerns were linked to numerous scientific studies issued by international scientific institutions, such as NASA, which revealed that the extreme climate changes impacting Alexandria could result in more extreme natural phenomena akin to the recent storm. These studies warned of the potential for the coastal city to sink, especially as sea levels rise. A recent study issued by the Technical University of Munich in Germany warned of the accelerated erosion of Alexandria's coasts and the collapse of hundreds of buildings due to the rising sea level of the Mediterranean Sea, and the intrusion of saltwater into the foundations of buildings. The ever growing threat of climate change The professor of marine sciences at the Faculty of Science at Alexandria University, Mohamed Shaltout, said that the history of climate change's reported impact on global average temperatures began in 1854, with the next warmest year being in 1990. He explained that temperatures rose by six degrees Celsius by the end of that period, which he cited as preliminary evidence of climate change. Climate change is the long-term impact on meteorological factors, he explained, which includes temperatures, rainfall, and weather patterns- consequently impacting all aspects of life. He noted that climate change will worsen water scarcity, further exacerbating shortages in already water-poor areas. Shaltout said that sea levels off the coast of the Egyptian Delta, especially Alexandria, will not exceed 29 cm in the worst-case scenario. This means that Alexandria is safe from total submersion, but added, 'We must manage the coasts more efficiently to deal with this slight increase.' He spoke about the risks posed by climate change, including coastal submersion and the subsequent displacement of their populations, the potential for drought and subsequent water scarcity, which will impact agriculture, and rising temperatures and the resulting migration of animals northward. MPs urge the state to act The head of the Liberal Constitutional Party, Mohamed Magdy Afifi, urged the state to take scientific warnings about Alexandria's vulnerability to submersion seriously, conducting in-depth study with experts from NIOF and the Faculty of Marine Sciences and Technology. This will help determine the best methods for addressing these warnings through future plans to protect Alexandria. Afifi noted that the destruction of 280 buildings over the past two decades, with 7,000 buildings at risk of collapse in the coming period, is a serious matter that requires in-depth scientific study by specialists. A member of Parliament for the Montazah district in Alexandria, Abul-Abbas Farhat Turki, said that climate change is going to impact many countries around the world and all marine systems, and Egypt will suffer greatly for it. He pointed out that parts of Alexandria, Marsa Matrouh, Beheira, and Kafr el-Sheikh are at risk of submersion and extinction, which requires swift action to develop future plans to address the crisis. Turki warned that global scientific institutions have issued studies showing that parts of Alexandria will likely be submerged and that the city is being impacted by climate change, due to rising sea levels. This requires careful preparation through marine protection projects, he added. A member of Parliament for the Raml district in Alexandria, Aly al-Dessouki Ahmed, also expressed deep concerns about the impact of climate change on Alexandria. He referred to NASA scientist Essam Heggy's statement regarding the possibility that large parts of Alexandria, its suburbs, and areas in northern Egypt being submerged, which will requires a concerted effort to save the coastal city. Dessouki said that climate change is a complex and pivotal issue, and 'We must conduct a comprehensive assessment of crisis management to ensure we are well prepared for future storms and environmental or marine disasters that may occur as a result of climate change and rising sea levels.' He praised the Alexandria Governorate's agencies for managing Saturday's severe weather, but warned that future storms could be more severe and difficult, requiring all agencies to maintain the highest level of preparedness. A Member of Parliament for the Montazah district in Alexandria, Mohamed Hussein al-Hamamy, said that Saturday's storm was a real test on how to manage crises and disasters in Alexandria. While the governorate had succeeded in dealing with it and mitigating its impacts, Hamamy warned that climate change is difficult and requires special preparations to manage. He explained that the state must act must use realistic scientific plans to confront this threat and prevent the city from sinking. This can be achieved by establishing marine protection projects for beaches along the Alexandria Corniche coastline and taking urgent measures to protect Alexandria from increasing rainfall rates brought on by climate change, he added. Egypt, EU launch Horizon Europe Work Programme 2025 in Cairo - Economy
The European Union (EU) delegation to Egypt, in collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology, held the Horizon Europe Work Programme 2025 launch event in Cairo on Wednesday. The event marked a key milestone in strengthening Egypt-EU cooperation in research and innovation. Over 150 participants attended the launch, including Egyptian academics, researchers, innovators, and officials from the Ministries of Higher Education and Foreign Affairs. Ambassador Angelina Eichhorst, head of the EU delegation to Egypt, and Mohamed Ayman Ashour, minister of higher education and scientific research, inaugurated the event. The day aimed to raise awareness about new opportunities for Egyptian entities under Horizon Europe, the EU's flagship research and innovation programme with a 95.5 billion euro budget for 2021–2027. Discussions focused on enhancing collaboration, funding access, and Egypt's growing role in the European research and innovation ecosystem. The event follows the initialling of the Horizon Europe Association Agreement between Egypt and the EU on 10 April, paving the way for Egypt's formal association. While the agreement is expected to be signed by November 2025, transitional arrangements are already in place. As of 10 April, Egyptian institutions are eligible to participate in Horizon Europe calls under the 2025 budget and enjoy the same rights as entities from associated countries. 'This year marks two decades of EU-Egypt science and technology cooperation,' said Ambassador Eichhorst. 'Egypt's association with Horizon Europe will usher in a new era, offering not just funding, but also a voice in shaping research priorities, leading international consortia, and opening doors for youth, researchers, and entrepreneurs to innovate and collaborate globally,' she added. Minister Ashour echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of international collaboration to advance Egypt's scientific and technological capabilities. He noted that the partnership with Horizon Europe will help integrate Egypt's research landscape with global networks, fostering knowledge exchange and innovation-led growth. Horizon Europe represents the EU's highest level of international scientific collaboration, offering non-EU countries full participation in research activities. Through this association, Egyptian researchers and institutions will gain access to cutting-edge European research infrastructures and cross-border scientific partnerships spanning academia, industry, and civil society. The association is expected to deepen scientific ties between Egypt and the EU, support Egypt's national innovation agenda, and contribute to regional and global research initiatives. On Wednesday, the two sides concluded the negotiations to extend the Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area (PRIMA), a strategic programme focused on sustainable water and food systems. Egypt, EU extend PRIMA agreement to boost food and water innovation in Mediterranean - Markets & Companies
Egypt and the European Union (EU) have concluded negotiations to extend the Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area (PRIMA), a strategic programme focused on sustainable water and food systems. The renewed agreement reinforces collaboration between the EU and participating Mediterranean states, aiming to develop and pilot innovative, scalable solutions to the region's most urgent challenges—food insecurity and water scarcity. Launched in 2017, PRIMA pools knowledge and funding across countries to support scientific research and innovation. The EU has pledged up to 325 million euros towards the programme through 2031, with participating states contributing an estimated 384 million euros over the same period. The agreement was initiated in Cairo by Abdel Hamid El-Zoheiry, Egypt's PRIMA National Coordinator, and Nienke Buisman, Head of International Cooperation at the European Commission's Directorate-General for Research and Innovation. Egypt's Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Mohamed Ayman Ashour, EU Ambassador to Egypt Angelina Eichhorst, and representatives from Egypt's foreign and higher education ministries attended the signing ceremony. Eichhorst described PRIMA as a flagship EU research programme and a crucial platform for science diplomacy and regional cooperation. 'This initiative promotes joint ownership and leadership in addressing key regional issues like food security and water scarcity,' she said. 'Since 2019, we are proud to have supported 123 Egyptian beneficiaries—from universities and research institutes to private enterprises—who have participated in 90 PRIMA initiatives, securing 17 million euros in funding.'
