Apple Poised to Offer App Store Changes to Dodge More EU Fines

Bloomberg6 hours ago

Apple Inc. is poised to offer further App Store changes to appease European Union antitrust watchdogs who issued an ultimatum after doling out a €500 million ($580 million) fine.
The iPhone maker's proposal — due by June 26 — would make it easier for third-party developers to direct customers away from the Apple ecosystem to make software purchases, according to people familiar with the matter, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

A Popular iPhone App Just Got a Simple Yet Significant New Feature

Apple is finally rolling out some key updates to one of its newer iPhone apps. If you don't use Apple Sports as your default sports app, I'd highly recommend trying it. Unlike other popular sports apps, like ESPN, Apple Sports cuts out the bloat — advertisements, news and rumor articles — and just gives you quick access to real-time game scores and stats. It's a minimalist app that's incredibly easy to navigate. But the coolest thing about Apple Sports is that it makes using Live Activities — the feature where your favorite team's games appear right on your Lock Screen — super easy. And, if you find a one-off game that you want to keep track of, a quick tap of the Live Activity icon will get it to show up on your Lock Screen, too. That said, as somebody who uses Apple Sports every day, I'll admit the app isn't perfect. It's pretty barebones and, most significantly, some popular sports haven't been supported. Off the top of my head, tennis and golf, as well as some important competitions, such as FIFA's current Club World Cup, have been notable omissions. But that looks set to change. Today, Apple is adding a simple yet neat new feature to Apple Sports, as well as rolling out support for a new sport. Apple has introduced a new 'Home' section to the Apple Sports app, which will allow you to customize and better organize your favorite teams, leagues and competitions to appear in the app based on your preferences. The press release states: 'Events and matchups are now grouped by league, with intuitive controls for fans to set their preferred order, ensuring their top leagues appear first. Favorite teams always appear at the top, giving fans instant access to the scores and updates they care about the most.' Those who have favorited several teams or competitions can now edit which of them appears at the top of the new Home section. To do this, select Home in the top-right > select Edit > and drag and reorder as you see fit. The other big update is that Apple is finally adding support for Men's and Women's tennis, which had been one of the biggest omissions (along with golf) to date. The addition of tennis comes at an opportune time — Wimbledon begins next week. According to Apple, its sports app will have support for over 1,000 tennis tournaments, including the Grand Slams. The updated app will allow users to track specific players' progress throughout the tournament, just like you've been able to do so with other sports teams — yes, each of their matchups will appear as a Live Activity on your iPhone's Lock Screen. Apple is rolling out this update — technically 'version 3.0' — to Apple Sports right now. Your app will update automatically in the coming days, but you can initiate it manually by following these steps: Open the App Store app on your iPhone. Select your profile icon. Tap Apps. Tap My Apps. Scroll down to Apple Sports and select 'Update.' To learn more about the new features coming to Apple Sports, check out Apple's press release. EU Commission to propose dedicated defence and space investment in new fund

BRUSSELS (Reuters) -The European Commission will propose dedicating part of a new European Competitiveness Fund to resilience, defence and space, the EU executive's leadership said on Wednesday. The Commission is expected to put forward a plan for a competitiveness fund to invest in strategic sectors and innovation as part of an upcoming proposal for the bloc's 2028-2034 budget. "The gap to fill, after years of underinvestment and under attention to defence, is large," European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas wrote in a letter to European leaders on Wednesday. "This is why the Commission's proposal for the next Multiannual Financial Framework will also address the need for substantial funding for defence in the years to come through a dedicated Resilience, Defence and Space window of the European Competitiveness Fund," they wrote. EU leaders are expected to discuss defence priorities during a summit in Brussels on Thursday. The discussion will take place a day after a NATO summit in The Hague, where alliance members committed to boosting defence spending to 5% of Gross Domestic Product.

Apple CarPlay Ultra stalled — these brands now say they're out

Apple finally revealed CarPlay 2, as CarPlay Ultra, in May. Initially, it was supposed to be on Aston Martin, Kia, and Hyundai vehicles. However, a new (paywalled) Financial Times report (via MacRumors) claims that a number of major manufacturers are backing away from commitments to support the next generation of the CarPlay software system. Manufacturers retreating include Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Polestar, Renault and Volvo. The major overhaul was announced at WWDC 2022 and showed up again in 2023 with previews on Aston Martin and Porsche dashboards. When it was initially revealed, at least 14 automakers were listed as future supporters. Compared to the current CarPlay interface, Ultra is meant to replace the entire dashboard. Not only will you see traditional iPhone apps, but also vehicle information like speed, fuel levels and temperature. Apple has called it "a unified and consistent experience across all the driver's screens." Apparently, the luxury automakers are concerned about maintaining their own software and in-car experiences. From the FT report: Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Additionally, Ford, Nissan and Jaguar Land Rover still seem to be on board but wouldn't really comment to Financial Times. Apparently, BMW will implement CarPlay but not the new CarPlay Ultra. Audi seems like it will follow the BMW model, saying it wants to offer a "customized and seamless digital experience." Aston Martin already offers CarPlay Ultra. According to FT, Hyundai, Kia and Genesis are still committed partners with Porsche planning future support. Despite the setback, Apple apparently told Financial Times that more manufacturers are coming on board. "We're collaborating closely with automakers to provide the best of iPhone and the best of the car and this work takes time," Apple said. When any vehicles with CarPlay Ultra will actually be available has not been announced.
