In collaboration with the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and its administrative arm, the British Council's Shivalinga, the scheme will sponsor five students annually for master's programmes in reputed UK universities, including institutions such as the University of Oxford, LSE, Imperial College London, and King's College London.
Key features:
Full scholarship for one-year master's degree courses.
Covers tuition, exam and research fees, living allowance, and round-trip economy airfare.
Joint selection process by representatives of the Uttar Pradesh government and the FCDO.
The programme will run initially for three academic years (2025-26, 2026-27, and 2027-28) with a provision for renewal until March 2028.
The state education minister confirmed that funding has been allocated in the 2025-26 budget, and the scholarship will help bridge the gap for talented students from low-income backgrounds who are otherwise unable to access global education opportunities.

HSGMC demands rollback of amendments giving more teeth to judicial commission
Days after the Haryana cabinet approved amendments to the Haryana Sikh Gurdwaras (Management) Act, the Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (HSGMC) has strongly opposed the changes, calling them a violation of the rights of elected members. The amendments were approved by the state cabinet on August 1 in a meeting chaired by Saini. Under the current law, Section 17(2)(c) empowers HSGMC to remove its own members with a two-thirds majority. However, the proposed amendment would transfer this authority to the Gurdwara Judicial Commission. At a general house meeting in Kurukshetra on Friday, attended by 27 members, HSGMC president Jagdish Singh Jhinda, general secretary Harjeet Singh, joint secretary Balwinder Singh Kangthali, executive member Kuldeep Singh Multani and others condemned the move and demanded the government withdraw the amendments before they are tabled in the upcoming monsoon session of the assembly. Elected member from Karnal's Assandh Jhinda said the changes were made without consulting the house, which is an 'insult to the elected members.' He alleged that the government was attempting to 'unfairly control' gurdwara management, adding, 'This will not be tolerated under any circumstances.' Speaking to Hindustan Times, Jhinda clarified, 'Our protest is not against one particular amendment but against the entire process of imposing changes without discussion. The government should have at least consulted the executive body before moving forward.' The HSGMC has sought a meeting with chief minister Nayab Singh Saini to present its concerns. The amendments were approved by the state cabinet on August 1 in a meeting chaired by Saini. A government spokesperson said the changes aim to strengthen the legal framework for gurdwara management, enhance transparency, ensure judicial oversight, and provide a structured system for managing properties. The government maintains that the amendments will improve transparency and oversight, but the HSGMC insists they undermine the democratic mandate of its elected representatives. BOX Key changes include Omission of Section 17(2)(c), transferring the power to remove committee members to the Judicial Commission under Section 46. Replacement of Sections 44 and 45, granting the commission sole authority to resolve disputes over voter eligibility, disqualifications, service matters, and committee appointments. Revision of Section 46, empowering the Commission to decide disputes over gurdwara property, funds, and internal conflicts, and to suspend or remove members for misconduct. The Commission may take suo moto action in cases involving misuse of gurdwara property or funds, issue temporary injunctions to protect assets, and exercise powers equivalent to a civil court. New Sections 46A to 46N establish its expanded powers, bar civil court jurisdiction in such matters, and protect Commission members acting in good faith.

India's LPG Price Is Among Lowest In World Despite Imports: Hardeep Puri
New Delhi: Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri highlighted on Friday that India sells LPG at the cheapest prices in the world, despite being an importer, enabling more than 10.33 crore Ujjwala families to cook food at just Rs 6 per day due to the affordable fuel. "Our energy sector oil marketing companies suffered heavy losses to make LPG available to kitchens at nearly half the cost at which it was being sold in the countries in our neighbourhood," the minister said. He pointed out that even when LPG prices soared by 63 per cent in the international market amid global uncertainty, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's policy insulated Indian households against the price rise and ensured they didn't feel any negative impact. The minister said that by making LPG available at a price lower than cost, the public sector oil marketing companies have suffered underrecoveries to the tune of approximately Rs 41,000 crore during the financial year 2024-25. Friday's Cabinet decision paves the way for partial reimbursement of Rs 30,000 crore to the public sector oil companies against these under-recoveries. The Union Cabinet, chaired by PM Modi, has decided that Rs 30,000 crore will be paid in twelve parts to the public sector oil companies, which have kept the LPG prices stable. The compensation, which will be divided amongst the three energy sector oil marketing companies - Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum - will support the financial health of these companies, which ensure availability, affordability and sustainability of energy supply for the citizens of the country in difficult geopolitical times and uncertainties, the minister said. "In the last 11 years of the Narendra Modi government, we have witnessed a major transformation in India's energy landscape, with special focus on providing access to clean energy to the masses," Puri said. The minister said that about 56 lakh domestic LPG cylinders are delivered every day, about 6 crore consumers visit retail outlets every day across the country, and to strengthen the availability of fuel in rural areas, of the total LPG distributors added during the last decade, around 86 per cent are rural distributors. The LPG pipe network has also been strengthened. LPG pipelines of about 3,000 km have been laid since 2014. The Kandla-Gorakhpur LPG pipeline is the world's largest LPG pipeline of 2,805 km, and the Paradip-Haldia-Motihari pipeline of 1,707 km is under construction, the minister added.
