Ringgit continues to improve ahead of Malaysia's 1Q GDP announcement
At 8 am, the local note appreciated to 4.2705/2920 versus the greenback from Thursday's close of 4.2795/2870.
Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said markets are waiting for Malaysia's 1Q 2025 GDP growth data, with advance estimates of a 4.4 per cent expansion.
He noted that the data will be a key factor in Bank Negara Malaysia's (BNM) decision on whether to ease monetary policy, as well as the forecast for GDP growth this year.
"As such, we expect ringgit to trade more cautiously today," he told Bernama.
Meanwhile, Mohd Afzanizam noted that the US Dollar Index (DXY) was down by 0.16 per cent to 100.87 points, while the United States (US) Producer Price Index (PPI) continued to moderate to 2.4 per cent year-on-year in April after sustaining at 3.4 per cent in February and March.
This suggests that inflation in the US will continue to ease and create more room for the US Federal Reserve (Fed) to cut rates this year, he added.
"However, Fed chair Jerome Powell's speech at the Thomas Laubach Research Conference in Washington hinted that the inflation trend is likely to be more erratic due to the supply shocks, which have become more frequent and potentially more persistent.
"This could mean the Fed is not keen to ease its monetary policy stance in the near term, which would affect the ringgit," he said.
At the opening, the ringgit traded mostly higher against a basket of major currencies.
It was up against the British pound to 5.6819/7105 from 5.6862/6961 at Thursday's close, and rose vis-a-vis the euro to 4.7800/8040 from 4.7939/8023 yesterday, but edged down versus the Japanese yen to 2.9338/9490 from 2.9326/9379 previously.
At the same time, the local note was traded mixed against its ASEAN peers.
It climbed versus the Singapore dollar to 3.2931/3102 from 3.2950/3010 yesterday and gained against the Philippine peso to 7.66/7.70 from 7.67/7.69 previously.
The ringgit had also strengthened against the Indonesian rupiah at 258.3/259.7 from 258.8/259.4 at the previous close, but fell against the Thai baht to 12.8630/9367 from 12.8198/8488 yesterday. - Bernama

Ahmad Zahid is in Singapore for a two-day working visit beginning Saturday and is scheduled to attend the Singapore National Day Parade this evening at the invitation of the Singapore Government. In the separate meetings, he conveyed his warmest congratulations to the Government and people of Singapore on the occasion of their 60th National Day celebrations. Meanwhile, Ahmad Zahid said his meeting with Wong, who is also Finance Minister, focused on strengthening long-standing bilateral relations, including strategic projects that have the potential to boost foreign direct investment (FDI) and create more job opportunities in Malaysia. "We also discussed new areas of cooperation in tourism, TVET, and strengthening people-to-people ties as the foundation for long-term understanding,' he said. Both leaders also examined ways to share best practices in enhancing laws related to the gig economy, which has become one of the key sectors in both countries. Ahmad Zahid said Malaysia and Singapore are studying the matter from legal and policy perspectives to ensure industry players, especially gig workers, receive appropriate protection and have their welfare safeguarded. New e-commerce law proposed by KPDN to regulate digital trade
KOTA KINABALU: The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) has proposed drafting a new law specifically to regulate e-commerce. The aim is to ensure a more organised and effective digital trade ecosystem at the national level. Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh stated that the proposal is built on three key pillars. These include clearer industry responsibility, stronger enforcement, and comprehensive protection for consumers and small businesses. 'KPDN will ensure that the e-commerce ecosystem is not only innovative but also safe, transparent, and ethical,' she said. She emphasised the importance of cooperation from all stakeholders to achieve these goals. The ministry hopes constructive feedback from engagement sessions will refine the draft legislation before submission. Fuziah spoke to reporters after the second E-Commerce Legislative Review Engagement Session. The session involved industry representatives, digital platforms, merchant associations, and consumer protection groups. Legal experts, academics, and government agency officials also participated in the discussions. KPDN organised the session to address the need for updated e-commerce laws. Existing regulations must remain relevant in governing the fast-changing digital marketplace. 'These improvements are crucial to adapt to dynamic shifts in online business,' Fuziah added. She highlighted the growing role of e-commerce in Malaysia's digital economy. However, rapid growth has also led to risks like fraud and unsafe products. PM Anwar open to new urgent projects in Kelantan despite RMK13 allocations
KOTA BHARU: The government remains open to reviewing new and urgent project proposals from Kelantan, even though major projects have already been allocated under the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13). Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stated that project prioritisation was determined through direct engagement with the state government. 'We have presented RMK13, but new applications have been submitted, and if they are urgent, we will study them, especially flood mitigation, water supply, energy, and hardcore poverty eradication,' he said. He added that the national budget process would consider RMK13 while reviewing additional priorities. Anwar spoke at the closing ceremony of the Kelantan 2025 MADANI Rakyat Program at Sultan Muhammad IV Stadium. Present were Science Minister Chang Lih Kang, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, Chief Secretary Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, and Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud. Anwar noted that engagement sessions have been streamlined to include state government input.
