Diaspora remittances hit new record at $135.46 bn in FY25
The
Indian diaspora
sent home $135.46 billion in the last fiscal year, the highest on record. According to latest balance of payments data released by the Reserve Bank of India, gross inward remittances by overseas Indians, as reflected in 'private transfers', were 14% higher from the previous year.
India has been the biggest recipient of
diaspora remittances
for more than a decade now. The inflows have more than doubled in eight years — from $61 billion in 2016-17.
RBI data show that remittances accounted for over 10 % of the gross
current account inflows
of $1 trillion during the fiscal year ended March 31.
'The strong growth in remittances has persisted despite weakness in crude oil prices,' said Gaura Sengupta, chief economist at
IDFC First Bank
. 'This is a result of rising share of the skilled labour force migrating to developed markets such as the US, UK and Singapore. As per RBI data, these three countries account for a 45% share in total remittances,' she said, adding: 'Meanwhile, the share of GCC countries has been reducing.'
Oil prices often influence remittances from countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).
Moreover, India continues to remain one of the low-cost countries for sending US$200, an RBI research paper said.
The other major sources of current account inflows are software services income and business services income, each crossing $100 billion last fiscal year. Together the three (remittances, software and business services) accounted for more than 405 of the gross current account inflows.
'India's remittance receipts have generally remained higher than India's gross inward foreign direct investment (FDI) flows, thus establishing their importance as a stable source of external financing,' noted a report by RBI staff on a survey of remittances. Besides, they are a major source of funding for India's trade deficit. In FY25, gross inward remittances were nearly half (47%) of the country's merchandise trade deficit of $287 billion.
India has been the largest recipient of inward remittances, according to World Bank data. In 2024, Mexico was at a distant second position with inflows estimated at $68 billion. China was third at an estimated $48 billion.
Globally, inward remittances represent the flow of cross-border household income, arising from the temporary or permanent movement of people to foreign economies. Moreover, as defined by the International Monetary Fund in 2009, two items in an economy's balance of payments statistics relate to remittances — compensation of employees under primary income account and personal transfers under secondary income account. In the case of India, personal transfers, primarily comprising inward remittances for family maintenance from Indian workers residing abroad, and local withdrawals from non-resident deposit accounts, form the major portion of cross-border inward remittances, noted a paper published in RBI's March 2025 monthly bulletin.

Indian IT giants bet big on AI, rewire business DNAs for AI-driven future
Indian IT majors are aggressively repositioning themselves as AI-native firms, focusing on high-margin applications and integration over high-risk, capital-intensive foundational research. A deep dive into the FY25 annual reports from the industry behemoths --- TCS , Infosys , Wipro, and Tech Mahindra -- indicates that in the global AI race, India's tech titans are not competing to invent foundational AI, they are positioning themselves to become premier integrators of it. The shift from general digital transformation to a specific AI focus is captured in the very titles of their annual reports. TCS frames its strategy within "The Perpetually Adaptive Enterprise," driven by a stated "AI-First approach." Infosys takes an even more direct path with its theme, "AI Your Enterprise," while Wipro focuses on its role as an enabler in "Helping Clients Build AI-Powered Future-Ready Businesses." Tech Mahindra joins this chorus with "AI Delivered Right." The IT firms are laying a greater focus on investing in human capital and upskilling their workforce. TCS has reported that over 1 lakh of its employees have acquired "higher order skills in AI/ML and GenAI, while Infosys has said that over 2.70 lakh of its employees are now "AI-Aware". Similar trends are observed in Wipro and Tech Mahindra as well. "The advent of AI with all its possibilities and potential creates another arc of uncertainty. As enterprises look at applying AI to every aspect of the business, some long-standing challenges will become imperative and self-evident to firms," Infosys Chairman Nandan Nilekani said. The need to modernise legacy systems and create a data architecture so that all the firm's data is consumable by AI, in a holistic manner, can no longer be put off, he said and urged enterprises to have an AI foundry and an AI factory to fuel innovation as well as scale. "Let us think of AI as a gifted child prodigy born and brought up in a library. It has access to all the knowledge in the world. It absorbs everything -- information, fact, fiction, truth, untruth, every pattern of human behaviour. Used well, it can create extraordinary value, particularly for businesses like TechM," Mahindra Group Chairman Anand G Mahindra said. The global AI market is projected to skyrocket, reaching an estimated $1.3 trillion over the next decade, according to industry estimates. The IT firms are not building their own large language models (LLMs) to compete with OpenAI or Google. Instead, they are deepening partnerships with hyperscalers (Microsoft, Google, AWS) and chipmakers (Nvidia) to access the latest models and infrastructure. Firms are creating dedicated spaces for co-innovation, TCS is establishing AI Centres of Excellence and AI Labs, while Infosys is building its AI foundry, allowing clients to experiment with AI in a controlled environment. Their bet is that as AI becomes a utility, the most enduring value will be captured not by those who create it, but by those who can expertly wire it into every corner of the enterprise. India's largest IT services company TCS believes that generative artificial intelligence (AI) is not just another tech cycle but a "civilisational shift" which will positively benefit every industry. Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran, who also chairs the TCS board, said the $30 billion IT services company will create a "large pool" of AI agents to work alongside humans and deliver solutions in a "human AI" model in the future. Wipro announced realignment within its Global Business Lines (GBLs) to better align with the changing needs of clients and to capitalise on opportunities in AI, cloud computing, and digital transformation. "This evolution of our business lines will enable us to further sharpen our focus towards client needs with consulting-led and AI-powered solutions. This realignment will allow us to serve our clients better, enabling us to deliver tailored, high-impact transformation," Wipro CEO and MD Srini Pallia had said. PTI

Delhi developer to invest $2 billion on India data centre boom
Anant Raj Ltd. plans to spend Rs 180 billion ($2.1 billion) on data centres as it joins a growing list of Indian companies looking to ride the boom in demand for artificial intelligence and business process-led services in the country. The Delhi-based developer with a market value of $2.3 billion will launch two more data centres or server farms in the northern Indian state of Haryana. This is in addition to the one already operational, as it aims for a capacity of little over 300 megawatts by 2032, Amit Sarin, managing director at Anant Raj said. For context, India's data centre capacity is poised to grow by 77% to 1.8 gigawatts in the next four years, according to a 2025 report by property consultant JLL. 'India is witnessing one of the fastest growth phases globally for data centres,' said Sarin in an interview, adding that the project will be funded through the company's own funds. Anant Raj's move follows ambitious plans by India's top business houses Adani Group and Reliance Industries Ltd. to expand their footprint. The trend is underscored by Barclays Plc's view that the South Asian nation will be a big beneficiary of the data centre investment boom in Asia, driven by digitalization and rules requiring data to be stored within the country. Smaller firms are not far behind. Bengaluru-based RMZ Corp. is spending $1.7 billion on two data centres and Panchshil Realty is considering partnering with Blackstone Inc. to build a large data centre in Mumbai. Data centres are expected to make up more than 40% of Anant Raj's revenues in the next four years from 5% at present, Sarin said. The company tied up with the French IT company Orange Business to provide cloud services to its clients along with data centres last year. 'India currently generates 28% of the world's data but houses only 1% of it locally, presenting a significant opportunity for expansion as data localization becomes inevitable,' Sarin said.
