Only 44,570 acres to be irrigated under Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme this kharif season

HYDERABAD: Now, it's official. Only 44,570 acres will be irrigated under the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme (KLIS) this Kharif season, all due to lack of sufficient water.
The minutes of the first meeting of the State Level Committee for Integrated Water Planning and Management (SCIWAM) held on July 11, accessed by TNIE on Wednesday, revealed that out of four balancing reservoirs under Kaleshwaram project, Mallannasagar and Kondapochammasagar have sufficient storage for irrigation. In view of this, an action plan proposed by the chief engineer, Gajwel under these two balancing reservoirs has been accepted and recommended by the committee.
However, ayacut proposed under Annapurna and Ranganayakasagar balancing reservoirs, where there is a scarcity of water, will be reviewed after inflows are received at Yellampally and Mid Manair projects.
The Vanakalam action plan proposed by the chief engineer, Ramagundam in respect of Boggulavagu is accepted subject to realisation of water. The officials proposed 3,200 acres of ayacut under Boggulavagu.
Due to scarcity of water, the Vanakalam action plan proposed by the chief engineer (Irrigation), Ramagundam under SYP and SRSP above LMD and Manthani LIS will be reviewed after receiving sufficient inflows.
The officials proposed 2,05,320 acres under SRSP (above LMD) and 10,000 acres under Manthani Lift Irrigation Scheme.
In Ghanpur Anicut and Singur project too, the proposed ayacut will be reviewed after sufficient inflows reach Singur. The officials have proposed to irrigate 21,625 acres under Ghanpur Anicut.
In Gollavagu, Ralivagu, Nilwai and NTR Sagar projects, and Sadarmatt, Gaddenavagu and SRSP too, the Vanakalam action plan proposed by the chief engineer, Mancherial will be reviewed after receiving sufficient inflows.
However, the SCIWAM meeting accepted 32,662 acres of ayacut proposed under the Nizamsagar project. The chief engineer, Kamareddy requested that 3 tmcft of water be supplemented from Kondapochamma to Nizamsagar in case of low inflows into Nizamsagar.
The committee informed that supplementation will be possible only when sufficient inflows are received at SYP and all irrigation proposals under all balancing reservoirs in Kaleshwaram up to Kondapochamma are served.

A Gandhian turns old clothes into dignity for the needy through ‘Gandhiji Bank'

KHAMMAM: What happens to clothes that no longer spark joy or fit into our lives? While some trade them for steel utensils, in Madhira, they become sacred offerings. Guided by the belief that serving humanity is serving God, Lanka Kondayya, a Gandhian in action, has transformed his home on Azad Road into the soul of the Mahatma Gandhi Free Old Clothes Centre, also known as the 'Gandhiji Bank'. Every Sunday, his residence hums with the energy of a tribal market, but instead of goods for sale, it's compassion on display. Donors stream in from Madhira and neighbouring areas, carrying bundles of used clothes. Some drop them off; others simply call, and Kondayya, along with volunteers, collects them. These clothes are then distributed to the poor, the sick, and beggars who arrive at his doorstep. For the elderly, widows and the disabled, he personally delivers the clothes to their homes. Kondayya, a government health supervisor by profession, devotes his holidays and free time to this cause. Speaking to TNIE, Kondayya, popularly known as Asha Mitra, says, 'I once came across a child who didn't have any clothes. I felt terrible and immediately offered to bring him some from my home. But what he said stayed with me: 'You will help me, but what about the others? How will they manage?' After that, I started noticing patterns. During my work-related travels, I saw thousands of people without food or clothing. I couldn't unsee it. That's when I decided to do something. I tried to inculcate the values and teachings of a great man like Mahatma Gandhi in my mission.'

Monsoon stalls repair, leaves work on KLIS barrages in limbo

Hyderabad: The Medigadda barrage, along with the Annaram and Sundilla barrages under the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme (KLIS), has become unserviceable during this monsoon season. This is due to the state govt's failure to undertake the necessary repairs, as recommended by the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA), prior to the onset of rains. The Central Designs Organisation (CDO) of the Telangana irrigation department, citing its inability to provide the drawings required for the restoration of the barrages, reportedly asked the engineer-in-chief of the Ramagundam circle, under whose jurisdiction the Kaleshwaram barrages fall, to furnish reports from various investigations recommended by the NDSA. Despite this apparent deadlock between the two wings of the department, senior officials did not intervene to resolve the issue. A committee constituted by the Ministry of Jal Shakti in October 2023, led by J Chandrashekhar Iyer and member secretary Amitabh Meena, investigated the sinking of certain piers in Block 7 of the Medigadda barrage, as well as structural issues in the Annaram and Sundilla barrages. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Knee pain prices might surprise you Knee pain | search ads Find Now Undo The panel submitted a 365-page report, which was received by the Telangana govt in April this year. A senior irrigation official said, "As per the NDSA report, geo-technical and geo-physical investigations are needed to assess the integrity of the upstream and downstream secant pile cut-offs, as well as cavities beneath the raft. Additionally, the condition of the concrete structures and hydro-mechanical components of the barrages must also be assessed." Officials pointed out that these investigations can only be carried out during the summer, when the barrage is empty. With the monsoon season now underway and Medigadda receiving heavy inflows from the Godavari, such work is currently not feasible. All gates are open, allowing water to flow downstream without being diverted.

No fellowship amount for seven months, charge PhD scholars in Coimbatore

COIMBATORE: Due to technical issues, around 12 scholars pursuing PhD programmes at Government Arts College (Autonomous) in Coimbatore have not received their Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) amount for the past seven months. Scholars raised concerns that they would have to spend their own money for research, attending seminars, and purchasing chemicals. A PhD scholar told TNIE that over ten scholars in the science and arts departments who cleared the JRF of UGC NET are currently pursuing their PhD programmes. "Since January, we have not received the monthly fellowship amount of Rs 35,000. Although we complained several times, the college administration simply states they are taking steps to resolve the issue, without explaining the reason for the delay," she said. She expressed concern that without the fellowship amount, they have been forced to use their own money for research activities, seminar participation, and chemical acquisitions, adding that they were unable to meet their expenses. She said that this issue is only in this college, and she urged officials to take immediate action. According to sources from the college, the fellowship amount can only be approved for scholars by the nodal officer, who checks monthly research activities using the Scholarship and Fellowship Management Portal (SFMP). Last December, the nodal officer from the mathematics department was replaced by one from the Tamil department. However, the college administration should have obtained formal approval from the UGC by sending a request letter before making this change. The administration failed to do this, making the new nodal officer unable to login to SFMP. After that, the administration allegedly requested the UGC to allow the new nodal officer to log in through mail. Even though the nodal officer received a new login ID and password from UGC for the portal a few months ago, she has been unable to log in due to a technical issue. The administration allegedly decided to send a teaching faculty member to UGC's office at New Delhi directly to resolve this issue," sources added. When contacted, College Principal MR Yezhili told TNIE that they are taking steps to ensure scholars receive their fellowship amount soon.
