Monsoon stalls repair, leaves work on KLIS barrages in limbo
This is due to the state govt's failure to undertake the necessary repairs, as recommended by the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA), prior to the onset of rains.
The Central Designs Organisation (CDO) of the Telangana irrigation department, citing its inability to provide the drawings required for the restoration of the barrages, reportedly asked the engineer-in-chief of the Ramagundam circle, under whose jurisdiction the Kaleshwaram barrages fall, to furnish reports from various investigations recommended by the NDSA.

However, before this, the engineer-in-chief from Ramagundam had requested the CDO to provide the designs and drawings needed to initiate repair and restoration works at Medigadda and the two other barrages.
Despite this apparent deadlock between the two wings of the department, senior officials did not intervene to resolve the issue.
A committee constituted by the Ministry of Jal Shakti in October 2023, led by J Chandrashekhar Iyer and member secretary Amitabh Meena, investigated the sinking of certain piers in Block 7 of the Medigadda barrage, as well as structural issues in the Annaram and Sundilla barrages.

The panel submitted a 365-page report, which was received by the Telangana govt in April this year.
A senior irrigation official said, "As per the NDSA report, geo-technical and geo-physical investigations are needed to assess the integrity of the upstream and downstream secant pile cut-offs, as well as cavities beneath the raft. Additionally, the condition of the concrete structures and hydro-mechanical components of the barrages must also be assessed."
Officials pointed out that these investigations can only be carried out during the summer, when the barrage is empty. With the monsoon season now underway and Medigadda receiving heavy inflows from the Godavari, such work is currently not feasible. All gates are open, allowing water to flow downstream without being diverted.

Hyderabad: Building owners may be denied occupancy certificates (OCs) if they fail to properly dispose of construction and demolition (C&D) waste as Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is set to implement stricter regulations to tackle the issue soon. In this regard, the state govt has decided to introduce mandatory requirements for building owners to submit their C&D waste disposal certificate while applying for occupancy certificates with GHMC. The authorities are expected to issue a GO on these regulations within the next few weeks. Officials emphasise that the move would help reduce illegal dumping on roads, vacant plots, and water bodies, which has become a major environmental concern. As per the estimates, Hyderabad generates approximately 2,000 metric tonnes of C&D waste per day. There are four C&D waste processing plants in the city at Jeedimetla, Fathullaguda, Shamshabad, and Thumukunta, where citizens could deposit their waste. At present, a fine amounting to 5,000 is imposed on individual households, while a penalty of 25,000 is enforced on bulk waste producers, including builders, work contractors, institutions, and commercial establishments, for each violation where C&D waste is transported or disposed of in an unauthorised or hazardous condition. GHMC would also conduct regular monitoring and impose penalties on violators found disposing of debris improperly. Building owners who fail to comply with the new norms would face delays or rejection of their occupancy certificates. Meanwhile, under a comprehensive challan management system (CCMS), GHMC has issued nearly 4,000 penalties worth 70 lakh to residents and commercial establishments for various littering offences.

CM launches drive to plant 50cr trees in 5 years
Jhunjhunu/Jaipur: Chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma Sunday launched a massive statewide green drive, declaring the goal to plant 50 crore trees in five years under the Mission Hariyalo Rajasthan. Addressing a large public gathering at the district-level Van Mahotsav held at Mandawara village in Sikar, the chief minister reiterated his govt's commitment to turning Rajasthan into a greener and more prosperous state. The campaign takes inspiration from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's initiative 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam', launched last year on World Environment Day, and is now gaining momentum across the state. CET wraps up with display of teamwork, compassion
1 2 Times News Network Panchkula: The Common Eligibility Test (CET)-2025, conducted in four phases on Saturday and Sunday, concluded peacefully in Panchkula. Tight security arrangements were in place for the test, with 525 police personnel deployed to ensure safety. Panchkula DCP Srishti Gupta said that no cases of cheating or irregularities were reported during the two-day examination. She emphasised that robust security arrangements had been made at every centre, and personnel remained fully alert throughout.
