FDI net inflows at $586 million in May
Central bank data showed that the FDI net inflows—a key source of jobs and capital for the local economy—recorded a 3.93% drop from the $610 million in April, and a 21.3% increase from $483 million the same month last year.
'The increase resulted from the significant expansion in nonresidents' net investments in debt instruments,' the BSP said in an accompanying statement, with an 88.3% annual growth to $427 million from $227 million.
Equity capital placements were recorded at $62 million, while reinvestment of earnings stood at $97 million.
Placements for the month came mostly from the United States which accounted for 36%, followed by Japan with 33%, Singapore with 12%, and South Korea with 12%. These were then channeled mainly into manufacturing, real estate, and electricity, gas, steam, and air conditioning supply industries.
Year-to-date FDI net inflows stood at $3.0 billion, down by 26.9% from $4.0 billion in the January to May period of 2024. — BM, GMA Integrated News

BSP chief Remolona wants online gambling beyond reach of ayuda beneficiaries
"No one who receives ayuda, I think, should be allowed to gamble," Remolona said. Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Governor Eli Remolona Jr. on Monday called for measures that will prevent beneficiaries of government financial aid or ayuda from gambling online. Remolona also called for stricter implementation of know-your-customer (KYC) rules among online gaming platforms. He said it should be more difficult to access online gambling platforms, given their social impact of the industry, which the Department of Health (DOH) has flagged as a 'public health concern.' 'We basically want sand in the wheels. You can't just go to your phone and then press one icon and you're in a gambling site. You want it to be more difficult,' he said in a panel during the EJAP Economic Forum 2025 in Manila City. 'No one who receives ayuda, I think, should be allowed to gamble. Gambling leads to social harm. It's not just harming the individual, it's harming his family or her family,' he added. The BSP last week said it is finalizing new rules for banks, e-wallets, and other financial service providers regarding gambling, including biometric checks and daily limits on related transfers. The central bank earlier released a draft circular, which previously required payment service providers (PSPs) to create a facility that would allow users to create a separate online gambling transaction action (OGTA), which would then be placed under stricter rules in a bid to protect clients from risks associated with the industry. President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. has said he would study calls to ban online gambling. –NB, GMA Integrated News

FDI net inflows at $586 million in May
Foreign direct investments (FDI) into the Philippines stood at $586 million in May—a decline from the previous month but an increase from the same month last year, data released by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) on Monday showed. BSP wants biometric checks, daily limits on online gambling transactions
The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas on Thursday said it is finalizing new rules for banks, e-wallets, and other financial service providers regarding gambling, including biometric checks and daily limits on related transfers. In a statement, the central bank said upcoming measures include the following: Strict identity verification, including biometric checks such as facial recognition to ensure that only eligible individuals can use their funds for online gambling; Daily limits on gambling-related transfers to lessen excessive financial losses; Time-based restrictions on gambling payments to help curb impulsive behavior; User tools for setting personal spending caps, taking voluntary breaks, or self-excluding from gambling transactions. 'These safeguards aim to reduce the risks of addiction, fraud, and financial harm while promoting the responsible use of digital financial services,' the BSP said. 'The BSP remains committed to maintaining a safe, secure, and inclusive digital finance ecosystem for all Filipinos,' it added. The BSP did not give a timeline for the implementation, but said that these came following public consultation. It earlier released a draft circular, which previously required payment service providers (PSPs) to create a facility that would allow users to create a separate online gambling transaction action (OGTA), which would then be placed under stricter rules in a bid to protect clients from risks associated with the industry. There was no mention of this in the upcoming measures that the BSP released on Thursday. A number of lawmakers have pushed for a ban on the industry given worries that addiction is soaring, with more gamblers drawn to online, even accelerated further by advertisements on social media and e-wallet platforms. Several lawmakers have also proposed stricter regulations for online gambling, as they said a total ban would only lead to the public heading to illegal operations. The Department of Health (DOH) has flagged online gambling as a health issue, with President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. saying he will study calls to ban the industry. —AOL, GMA Integrated News
