Gamuda, IJM, Sunway seen as top bidders for RM10bil Selangor data centre contracts
Eco World Development Group Bhd and Sime Darby Property Bhd have each tendered out two data centre contracts. Eco World's projects, totalling 360 MW, are set in Eco Business Park V, Puncak Alam, while Sime Darby Property's 160 MW facilities will be located in Elmina Business Park, Sungai Buloh.
Maybank Investment Bank (Maybank IB) said each data centre job – valued at RM1 billion to RM2 billion – has attracted five to six bidders.
"Despite the prospect of the United States restricting the shipment of AI chips to Malaysia, we understand that Eco World, Sime Darby Property and Pearl Computing will award four data centre jobs totalling about 500MW over the next two months.
"We estimate that they will yield about RM10 billion of jobs and believe that they will be awarded to more than one winner," Maybank IB said.
It said that Gamuda, IJM, and Sunway are seen as strong candidates, thanks to their industrialised building system (IBS) capabilities, which support faster construction using precast panels.
Maybank IB added that all three hope to win at least one data centre job from the four tenders, which could add to their job win target this year. Gamuda is targeting RM20–25 billion in job wins for FY2026, IJM RM6–8 billion, and Sunway RM4.5–6 billion.
Gamuda is seen as the frontrunner, given its strong IBS capabilities, followed by IJM with its large-scale IBS manufacturing capacity. Sunway ranks third, constrained by smaller IBS output but standing out for its track record and scale in data centre construction.
"In our view, Sunway is handicapped relative to Gamuda and IJM due to its relatively smaller IBS manufacturing capacity. This is probably why Sunway is bidding for only three of the four data centre job tenders.
"We also believe it is under pressure to secure at least one data centre job win from Pearl Computing, as we understand that most of its data centre jobs thus far have been for co-location data centres which lease space, power, and cooling for their servers and networking equipment to, ostensibly, Chinese clients and are thus the main targets of the potential restriction in the shipment of AI chips to Malaysia."
Despite that, Sunway leads in experience. As of May 31, 2025, data centres account for 51 per cent of its RM7.9 billion order book and 54 per cent of its RM3.5 billion in year-to-date job wins. It has completed 84 MW in data centres and is building another 170 MW – more than Gamuda or IJM.
"We understand that the latest data centre job awarded to it of RM1.2 billion in May 2025 is from a Magnificent Seven company (Alphabet/Google, Amazon, Apple, Meta Platforms, Microsoft, NVIDIA, and Tesla), which testifies to its growing recognition within the data centre construction space," Maybank IB said.
IJM, meanwhile, is completing three data centres in Johor, which Maybank IB said could have strengthened its Selangor bids had they been completed earlier. Still, its strong IBS facility remains a key advantage.
That said, Maybank Ib believes that its well-regarded IBS facility gives it a large advantage, especially over Sunway, whose IBS facilities are a lot smaller.
"All four data centres will be leased to Pearl Computing, which we understand is backed by an American search engine giant, which is probably why they do not fear the potential restriction in the shipment of AI chips to Malaysia," Maybank IB said.
Pearl Computing already has a presence in Malaysia. In May 2024, it awarded Gamuda an RM815 million contract for core and shell works and another RM928.6 million for MEP works at a data centre in Elmina Business Park (80 MW total capacity).
"We understand that the capacity of data centre 1 is 80 MW. Thus, the total job wins above of RM1.74 billion translates into a benchmark of RM22 million per megawatt," Maybank IB said.
Based on a conservative RM20 million/MW benchmark and the 500 MW combined capacity of the upcoming projects, Maybank IB estimates RM10 billion worth of contracts will be awarded – RM5 billion for core and shell (to be awarded by Eco World and Sime Darby Property) and RM5 billion for MEP works (to be awarded by Pearl Computing).
Assuming a 10 per cent pre-tax margin, the industry could potentially generate RM1 billion in pre-tax profits from these jobs, with results expected in the next two months, Maybank IB said.

RM100 Sara aid brings relief for housewife
PADANG BESAR: While RM100 may not seem like a lot to many, it has become a vital source of financial support for Nursyafiqah Sobri, 31. Each month, the housewife from Bukit Keteri uses RM30 from the RM100 Basic Rahmah Contribution (Sara) assistance received by her husband to buy ingredients for making traditional kuih that she sells to shops near her home. "Alhamdulillah, my husband receives the Sara aid. Although it is only RM100 a month, it helps ease our family's financial burden. "Every month, I use RM30 to buy flour for making kuih, with the rest on essentials like rice." Nursyafiqah, who has two children aged 6 and 11, sells kuih such as cucur badak, keria and popia. Although her home-based kuih business brings in just RM50 to RM80 a week, she said she was grateful that the modest earnings could ease her husband's burden. "Some days, the kuih sell out and other days, they don't. But at least there's still some income." She said her husband, a security guard earning RM1,700 a month, remained the family's pillar of strength. The couple also care for their elderly parents who live with them. Nursyafiqah said the Sara assistance was a timely and much-needed initiative by the government, providing meaningful relief to families. The monthly aid, she said, was something they looked forward to. "I hope that the government will consider increasing the monthly Sara assistance from time to time as the prices of essential goods continue to rise." Under the 2025 Budget, the annual Sara assistance was increased to RM2,100 from RM1,200 previously. To boost public convenience, the government has expanded the range of goods eligible for purchase under the Sara programme to 14 categories. The number of registered participating retail outlets and supermarkets has also grown significantly, rising from 700 last year to over 4,100 premises nationwide as of this month.

86% And Counting, PM Slams Claims Of ‘No Results'
Credits to PMO FB Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has dismissed claims that multibillion-ringgit investments bring no tangible results, stating that the manufacturing sector continues to deliver direct benefits to Malaysians through job creation, wage increases and industrial value-add. 'They say billions in investments, where are the results? There's nothing to show. The reality is, 86% of the approved projects are already operational,' he said. He revealed that 3,494 manufacturing projects have been approved by the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) from 2021 until June 2025. Of these, 3,095 projects or 86.4%, have been realised and are now operational. Speaking at the monthly assembly of the Prime Minister's Department, Anwar noted that the implementation rate of approved projects stood at 90.6% in 2023, 79.2% in 2024 and 49.8% in the first quarter of 2025. 'I've told Minister Tengku Zafrul to continue publishing the relevant data and highlight the locations of operating plants — in Kulim, Johor, Sarawak, Sabah and the Klang Valley,' he added. He said most of the realised projects focus on digital and green industries. In the first quarter of this year alone, these projects have created 50,000 new jobs in the manufacturing sector. Median wages in the sector also rose by 5.4% to RM2,745, up from RM2,600 last year, aligning with the new minimum wage policy of RM1,700. Anwar also reported that since the establishment of the Invest Malaysia Facilitation Centre (IMFC) in December 2023, a total of 28,166 investor applications have been facilitated with a resolution rate of 99.9%. These applications involved matters such as approvals, permits, foreign worker quotas, utilities and tax-related issues. Related

Johor Bahru bus drivers strike disrupts Singapore commute
JOHOR BAHRU: Private employee Saiful Umar, 37, was among thousands caught off guard when around 100 Malaysian bus drivers operating to Singapore suddenly went on strike early this morning at the Sultan Iskandar Building (BSI). 'I was shocked, there was no information at all (on a strike),' he said. Passengers arriving as early as 5 am found no bus services, forcing some to walk one to two kilometres across the Johor Causeway to reach workplaces in Singapore. Saiful, who had to walk nearly two kilometres to Woodlands before getting a ride back to Tampoi, expressed frustration over the lack of prior notice. 'This situation is not only inconvenient but also affects our work and image,' he told Bernama. A viral video showed crowds at BSI at 5.30 am due to the halted bus services. Reports suggest the strike stemmed from drivers' dissatisfaction over salary adjustments and allowance cuts, allegedly reducing their monthly pay from RM2,800-RM2,900 to below RM2,000. Another passenger, K. Ramesh, 40, called the situation 'ridiculous,' urging the bus company to resolve the issue swiftly. 'This affects our daily routine and careers,' he said. Bus driver Atoi, 35, confirmed about 100 drivers began striking at 5 am in protest. By evening, services resumed, with no further disruptions observed. Johor Public Works Committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh confirmed the incident, having monitored operations with Singapore's LTA and bus operators earlier. – Bernama
