KAMManufaktur's Porsche 912 Tribute Commemorates Car's 60th Anniversary

KAMManufaktur's Porsche 912 Tribute Commemorates Car's 60th Anniversary

Yahoo03-03-2025

Here's a restomod Porsche based on the oft-overlooked .
The appeal here isn't huge power, but a feathery curb weight.
It's expensive, but you get a power-to-weight ratio close to a modern 911.
911? As Police Chief Clancy Wiggum once said, "You've got the wrong number, this is 91... 2." Launched in 1965 as the budget-friendly version of Porsche's classic 2+2, the 912 was intended to paper over some of the gap left by the last of the four-cylinder 365s with which it shared a powerplant. Instead of a flat-six, it was powered by an air-cooled 1.6-liter four-cylinder boxer, which made around 100 horsepower. However, the car was very light, and it is now coming into its own as a collectible. And, as you might have expected, there's also a company building a high-performance restomod version.
KAMManufaktur is a Hungarian company established a couple of years ago by Miklós Kázmér, a successful commercial and film director. Genesis came about almost accidentally, as Kázmér originally bought a 912 as a donor car for a 911 build, but fell in love with the four-cylinder's underdog charms. Together with a team of engineering specialists, he founded a company and set about giving the 912 the love it deserved.
The firm's creation is called the 912c, and that lower-case "c" stands for carbon fiber. A lot of carbon fiber. Just as the original 912 made the most of its modest power by being lighter and a bit better balanced than the 911, the 912c is unlike the big-bore restomodded Porsches made by other specialists. The now 2.0-liter flat-four is up in power, from 170 to just above 190 horsepower depending whether it's running carburetors or fuel injected, but the big story with the 912c is that, according to the company's claims, it weighs just 1650 pounds and has nearly perfect 50/50 weight distribution.
As the 912 turns 60 this year, KAMManufaktur is building a couple of motorsport-themed 912cs to celebrate the car's somewhat overshadowed history. The first of them is painted red like the 1967 912 driven by Poland-born Porsche factory driver Sobiesław Zasada, who won his class in the European Rally Championship three times. The other car is yellow, and based on a 912 used in Swedish rallying in period. Both cars look fantastic, much more discreet than a 911 from Singer or Gunther Werks.
Less power, less weight, and less ostentation goes against the flow somewhat in 2025, but KAMManufaktur's 912c looks extremely tempting. As the cars are low-production, buyers can slightly change the specification from a more track-oriented build with stiffer suspension to a more road-friendly experience. They've even built a targa version complete with roof rack and surfboard.
The cost for all this lightness is, unfortunately, somewhat weighty at over $400,000. Even so, perhaps this too is a long overdue tribute to the 912. For too long it was considered the poor cousin to the 911 or the "wrong" Porsche. That KAMManufaktur can build and sell such a desirable creation proves that the 912 was special all along.

Watch Xiaomi Set Production EV Record at The Nurburgring

Chinese tech giant Xiaomi, primarily known for its smartphones, is branching out by making cars. The SU7 is the company's inaugural model and has already spawned a high-performance Ultra version. Last October, a prototype lapped the Nürburgring in an astonishing 6 minutes and 46.8 seconds . At that point, Xiaomi promised it would return to the Green Hell and repeat the hot lap with a production-ready car. Predictably, the SU7 Ultra that customers can purchase in China was unable to match the performance of the stripped-down prototype. Nevertheless, a lap time of 7 minutes and 4.95 seconds is a remarkable achievement. It makes Xiaomi's electric super sedan faster than the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT, which lapped the challenging German track in 7 minutes and 7.55 seconds . The Xiaomi SU7 Ultra is also a tad faster than the Rimac Nevera, effectively dethroning the Croatian electric hypercar from the production EV leaderboard. The exotic two-door EV completed the lap in 7 minutes and 5.29 seconds . To clarify, all times mentioned refer to the longer configuration of the Nürburgring, which spans 12.9 miles (20.8 kilometers). The Mercedes-AMG One's record for the fastest production vehicle isn't in any danger for now. The F1-engined hypercar completed the lap in 6 minutes and 29 seconds last year. As for the outright record, it belongs to the track-only Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo, with a blistering lap time of 5 minutes and 19.55 seconds. It's hard to imagine a street-legal car will ever get close to that. Onboard footage shared by Xiaomi shows the SU7 Ultra reaching a GPS-verified speed of 215 mph (346 km/h). That makes the SU7 Ultra the fastest production sedan ever, whether gas or electric. The title previously belonged to the Maserati Ghibli 334 Ultima , with a top speed of 208 mph (334 km/h). The defunct Italian luxury sedan was only 1 mph faster than the Bentley Flying Spur W-12 and 2 mph faster than the Lucid Air Sapphire. Photo by: Xiaomi Photo by: Xiaomi Xiaomi mentions that the car can go even faster. With enough road ahead, it can exceed 217 mph (350 km/h). It's worth noting that the SU7 Ultra that tackled the Nürburgring wasn't completely standard. Xiaomi fitted the optional track package available to customers, so it doesn't disqualify the car from being considered a production model. As a refresher, the tri-motor EV has a combined output of 1,527 hp and can hit 62 mph (100 km/h) in 1.98 seconds. At 201.3 inches long, it's bigger than a Taycan and even heavier, at 5,203 pounds (2,360 kilograms). It went on sale in China at the end of February with a base price of just 529,900 yuan (nearly $74,000). Porsche to Auction a One-Off 911 GT3 RS Adorned with a Maple Leaf

Porsche is launching a new Porsche Experience Center (sorry, Centre) in Toronto and celebrating with a special charity auction. Porsche Cars Canada is auctioning a one-off 911 GT3 RS designed as a tribute to the Land of Maple, with a portion of proceeds benefiting Campfire Circle. While being auctioned in Canada, Porsche confirmed to Car and Driver that U.S. residents can bid, but then must convert the car to U.S. specifications. Porsche is launching its third Experience Center in North America, this time in the Toronto area, specifically Pickering, Ontario. To celebrate the opening and to benefit a local charity, Porsche Cars Canada is auctioning a one-off 911 GT3 RS as Canadian as Hudson's Bay or Shania Twain. The one-of-one model was designed as a collaboration between Porsche Cars Canada and Porsche's Sonderwunsch division, and was first shown at last year's Toronto Auto Show. A 911 GT3 RS with a Maple Leaf Livery Sometimes, rightfully so, sports-car drivers are accused of treating the road like their personal racetrack, ignoring turn signals and generally driving without consideration for those around them. We just can't imagine any of that tomfoolery going on with this car—at least not without an "ope" and at least one "sorry" to go along with blowing your doors off on the highway. Porsche The one-of-one 911 is finished in an eye-catching asymmetrical livery that draws considerable inspiration from the Canadian flag. The right two-thirds of the car is painted red, with the remaining third painted white. While the actual flag doesn't divide its colors in the same way, the ratio is the same. The red side of the car gets white graphics for the side and wheels, while the white side, of course, gets red accents. A duotone maple leaf on the roof is the cinnamon sugar on the top of the beaver tail. Porsche Porsche The Canadian touches don't stop with the exterior. The door sills feature a special Toronto skyline graphic, there's red-and-white stitching on the dash, and the seatbelts are finished in red too. The seats are clothed in a special red pepita fabric created just for this build. The winner of the auction also gets a matching Chronograph 911 GT3 RS watch. Porsche Fittingly, the auction opens tonight and runs until 3:00 p.m. on Canada Day (July 1). And the best part is that Porsche Cars Canada is donating a portion of the proceeds to the charity Campfire Circle. Plus, while the car is being auctioned in Canada, Porsche confirmed to Car and Driver that U.S. residents are eligible to participate. Should they win, they'd just need to pay to convert it to a U.S. specification car. Jack Fitzgerald Associate News Editor Jack Fitzgerald's love for cars stems from his as yet unshakable addiction to Formula 1. After a brief stint as a detailer for a local dealership group in college, he knew he needed a more permanent way to drive all the new cars he couldn't afford and decided to pursue a career in auto writing. By hounding his college professors at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, he was able to travel Wisconsin seeking out stories in the auto world before landing his dream job at Car and Driver. His new goal is to delay the inevitable demise of his 2010 Volkswagen Golf. Read full bio
