I had the pleasure of growing up in Kenya in the 1970s, so every time I return, it always feels special. The city, Nairobi, has, of course, changed a lot and when I send photos back to the office some in the team remark that it looks like Las Vegas at night.
In many markets that I get to travel to, the banks are desperately keen to drive digital experiences in the issuing and acquiring space. The same ambitions lie with the Kenyan banks – at least in words – but when it comes to action, it is always M-Pesa, other mobile money operators and fintechs that are driving the digitalisation agenda of payments locally.
The banks are increasingly having to slug it out over a small market share, which, in broad terms, is declining mainly because others are innovating first and staying customer relevant. Where the banks should have been tokenising their cards first or offering virtual card issuance, the one that launched the proposition first was M-Pesa.
M-Pesa's influence on the card-issuing market in Kenya is profound, driving changes in consumer behaviour, fostering competition and promoting innovations that integrate mobile money with traditional banking products.
Nairobi is a hotbed of fintech; last year it saw by far the greatest amount of funding in Africa going to its start-ups. Conference organisers have jumped on the bandwagon. It feels that every other month there is a new payments conference being organised in Nairobi.
The city itself, with five million people, is almost on a par with Addis Ababa and Cape Town and ranks about the 11th most populous in Africa, whilst the country's total population of around 57 million makes it the 7th largest by population.
Kenya Vision 2030
Kenya's economy is on a transformative journey. Central to this is Kenya Vision 2030, a comprehensive development blueprint launched in 2008, which seeks to elevate the country into a newly industrialised, middle-income nation. The vision aims for an average GDP growth rate of 10% per annum and focuses on three main pillars: economic, social and political development. Special Economic Zones: to attract foreign investment and promote manufacturing activities, particularly in textiles and leather production.
Industrial Cluster Hubs: for specific sectors, such as the Athi River Textile Hub, aimed at fostering local production and job creation.
Healthcare Initiatives
Universal Health Coverage: to provide accessible healthcare services to all Kenyans, it includes building new health facilities and improving existing ones.
Health Infrastructure Expansion: Construction of hospitals and clinics across the country to enhance healthcare delivery.
Affordable Housing: by addressing urban housing shortages through public-private partnerships.

Backed by Strathmore University with its academic prowess and Innovation Labs, the city is already an attractive destination for businesses and investors alike.

T he Current Banking Market and Trends in Card Issuing and Merchant Acquiring
As of 2025, Kenya's 46 commercial banks, despite lagging in payment innovation to others, remain robust. Major players include Equity Bank, Kenya Commercial Bank, and NCBA Bank, which dominate the market.
Given the ever-present competition from M-Pesa, the banks seek to differentiate by enhancing customer experience through their digital banking solutions and personalised services, whilst continuing to streamline operations and reduce costs. Other actions being taken include:
Enhanced Digital Services: Offering comprehensive easy-to-use mobile banking solutions.
Fintech Partnerships: to integrate advanced payment technologies into their services.
Customer Education: Promoting financial literacy to encourage customers to utilise a broader range of banking services beyond mobile money.

However, the banks still have a lifeline as they continue to benefit from the fast economic and population growth. The key trends are still positive with an upward trend in debit and credit card usage as consumers shift towards cashless transactions and banks launch new products that cater to various demographics, including youth-focused cards with unique benefits. Some of the trends include:
Rapid Growth of Prepaid Cards: Driven by consumer demand, banks and retailers are launching various prepaid card options.
Contactless Payments: Rising fast with many newly issued cards having tap-to-pay capabilities.
Increased Issuance of Debit and Credit Cards: As more consumers embrace banking services, the issuance of debit and credit cards is on the rise. Financial institutions are focusing on enhancing customer experience through innovative and digital card features and rewards programmes.
Integration with Mobile Platforms: Card issuers are increasingly integrating their products with mobile payment platforms, allowing users to link their cards to mobile wallets for seamless transactions. This integration supports the growing trend of digital banking among younger consumers.
Of the above, it is the prepaid card growth that is evolving the fastest. The key developments being:
Strong Market Growth: The prepaid card and digital wallet sectors in Kenya had a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16.5% from 2019 to 2023. This growth is projected to accelerate to 18.9% through to 2028, with the market expected to expand from US$1.70 billion in 2023 to US$4.12 billion by 2028.

Diverse Payment Options: Merchants are expanding their payment acceptance methods to include mobile wallets, QR code payments and other alternative payment methods.
Evolving POS acceptance: point-of-sale (POS) systems that accept multiple payment types, including contactless payments, are becoming standard.
E-commerce explosion: is pushing merchants to enhance their online payment capabilities with many investing in secure online payment gateways.
Despite positive trends, challenges remain in both card issuing and merchant acquiring
Infrastructure Issues: with frequent outages, unreliable and slow network connectivity impacting transaction processing, particularly for acquirers. Continuous downtime in Kenya affects customer trust and operational efficiency.
Fraud Concerns: The rise in digital transactions has led to increased fraud. Lenient penalties for fraudsters and inadequate enforcement of regulations contribute to a challenging environment. There is a need for stronger legal frameworks to mitigate fraud effectively.
Need for Collaboration: to address common challenges within the card ecosystem, such as high operational costs and regulatory compliance issues.
Specifically for bank-card issuers; they also face several challenges that are hindering the growth and efficiency of their operations. The main ones being:
Non-Conducive Operating Environment: with the regulatory environment often not favourable for card issuers such as high taxation on card production, for example, a 25% duty on white plastic making local production less competitive compared to international firms.
High Operational Costs: for investing in card technology and infrastructure are substantial. This is exacerbated by the lack of sufficient local investment from service providers, making it challenging for banks to maintain profitability in their card operations.
Knowledge Gaps: in the card ecosystem among various stakeholders, can lead to incorrect valuations, resulting in punitive taxation and inadequate responses to fraud cases.
Limited Consumer Awareness: where many are still unaware of the full benefits and functionalities of prepaid and credit cards, primarily viewing them as tools for withdrawing cash rather than for making purchases.
Competition from dominant Alternative Payment Methods: As many consumers prefer these owing to their convenience, this leads to slower growth in card usage. As stated earlier, M-Pesa significantly influences the card-issuing market in Kenya in the following ways:
Promotion of Financial Inclusion: M-Pesa has played a crucial role in enhancing financial inclusion in Kenya, increasing access to financial services by up to 82.9% by 2019. This expanded access brought more customers into the formal financial system, leading to increased demand for banking products, including cards. As more people become financially literate and engaged with digital payments, they are more likely to adopt debit and credit cards alongside their M-Pesa accounts.
Shift in Consumer Preferences: The M-Pesa convenience and accessibility have shifted preferences towards cashless transactions. Many users view M-Pesa as a primary means of conducting financial transactions, which can limit the growth of traditional card usage. However, as M-Pesa integrates with card services (such as its partnership with Visa for virtual cards), it creates a hybrid model.
Competition and Collaboration: Banks are increasingly collaborating with M-Pesa to provide integrated services that combine mobile money with traditional banking products. M&A bankers entered 2025 with big expectations that it would be a banner year for dealmaking. After a rocky start, the year is now shaping up to be decent – with sellers coming to market and buyers opening their wallets. Several M&A bankers said the market shifted abruptly in late May and June after shutting down in April when US president Donald Trump unveiled his tariff policy. Bankers said that although geopolitical and macroeconomic uncertainties remained thorns for M&A deals, the appetite to do deals had improved significantly – partly because many dealmakers expect uncertainties to persist for months or years. From the start of June through to mid-August there have been announced deals with a value of US$907bn, up 52% from the same period a year ago. It marks the best summer season since 2021, according to LSEG data. Japan continues to be a standout region for M&A, as it has been all year. The value of deals in Japan in the June to August 13 period was up a whopping 263% to US$98.5bn – one of its best summers ever, at least so far. The value of deals for US target companies was up 64% to US$413bn, and for European targets the deal value was up 10% to US$165bn. "Confidence has increased since earlier in the year and financial and strategic buyers are now more active in their pursuit of M&A," said Stuart Ord, head of UK M&A for Deutsche Numis. 'We're cautiously optimistic that the outlook for M&A will improve through the rest of the year and that will hopefully make 2026 a better year.' Big deals rule The deck has been stacked in favour of large deals. The value of announced deals that are between US$500m and US$1bn in size since the start of June is down 16%, and for deals smaller than US$500m the total value is down 13%. By contrast, mega deals – those valued at US$10bn or more – accounted for US$312bn of the total summer volume, up more than fivefold compared with the same period last year. So far, it's the best summer for mega deals since 2019. Deals valued between US$5bn and US$10bn also jumped by 111% from a year earlier to US$118bn, while deals valued between US$1bn and US$5bn rose 13% to US$253bn. An M&A banker said that not only are large transformative deals getting done, but they are closing "faster than they have in years". He said the regulatory environment has improved. That was certainly an expectation coming into the year – that the Trump administration would relax regulatory scrutiny. And while deals are closing faster, fewer deals are coming off the rails. So far this year, 488 deals have been withdrawn, the fewest in more than a decade and down 20% compared with the same stage of 2024. The biggest deals this summer have included Union Pacific agreeing to buy Norfolk Southern for US$85bn and Merck buying Verona Pharma for US$10bn. Amphenol bought CommScope's Connectivity and Cable Solutions business for US$10.5bn. And Apollo-backed Athora agreed to buy European savings and retirement services group Pension Insurance Corporation for £5.7bn. Those deals show both private equity and corporate buyers appear to have regained appetite. 'Private equity has dry powder to deploy and has more recently shown willingness to move onto the front foot in public and private situations," said Ord at Deutsche Numis. 'Strategics are also increasingly willing to move onto the front foot. Boards of some corporates are concluding that this uncertain environment may be the 'new normal' for the foreseeable future and so they should go for it if they are in good shape and strategic M&A is executable.' Both private equity and a corporate bidder were involved in a UK deal that came to a head last week for healthcare property firm Assura. After a months-long fight, shareholders opted for a £1.8bn offer from Primary Health Properties rather than an offer from a KKR-led consortium. That was also significant as Assura shareholders opted for a mostly shares offer over cash, which some saw as a vote of confidence in UK listed companies by major institutional investors. Deutsche Numis was joint lead financial adviser to PHP. 'It was good to see long only institutions speaking out in support of the compelling strategic logic and medium-term value creation of PHP's offer for Assura versus the competing offer of cash today," Ord said. There are also signs of the lofty and opportunistic ambitions that often show up when M&A markets perk up – not least in the high technology arena. Upstart AI tech company Perplexity has offered US$34.5bn in an unsolicited bid for Alphabet's Chrome browser. Perplexity, barely three years old, made its offer as Alphabet faces an upcoming antitrust decision that could force it to sell its web browser.

UAE Claims Nearly Half of MENA's Mid-Year M&A Value

Arabian Post Staff -Dubai The United Arab Emirates registered some US$25.4 billion in mergers and acquisitions through the first six months of 2025, making up approximately 43 per cent of all M&A transactions across the Middle East and North Africa—which totalled US$58.7 billion during the period, according to data from EY's latest MENA M&A Insights report. MENA deal-making demonstrated robust momentum in the first half of 2025, with 425 transactions reflecting a 31 per cent increase in volume and a 19 per cent rise in overall value compared with the same period in 2024, as EY's analysis shows. ADVERTISEMENT Cross-border activity surged, accounting for 55 per cent of all deals by number and 78 per cent by value—marking the highest cross-border level in the past five years. Key sectors driving these overseas transactions included chemicals and technology, which together represented two-thirds of cross-border deal value. Among the most significant was the US$16.5 billion deal in which Borealis AG and OMV AG acquired a 64 per cent stake in Borouge plc. Domestic deal-making remained energetic too. Homegrown transactions constituted 45 per cent of all deals by volume and 22 per cent of the total value, amounting to 192 deals worth US$12.8 billion—an impressive 94 per cent year-on-year rise in value. The technology and diversified industrial products sectors were prominent in this category. A standout deal was AI and cloud services firm Group 42's acquisition of a 40 per cent stake in Khazna Data Centres for US$2.2 billion. EY's MENA EY-Parthenon Leader, Brad Watson, emphasised that the mid-year results underline how resilient and dynamic the region's M&A market is. He pointed to sustained appeal for investors, underpinned by stable oil prices, infrastructure expansion and a strategic emphasis on growth industries such as technology, chemicals, and industry. I n particular, he noted that the UAE continues to attract significant global capital, thanks to its strong regulatory environment and push for economic diversification, alongside growing collaborative ties with Europe, Asia, and North America. When compared with mid-2024 performance, the jump is clear. In the first half of last year, the MENA region recorded 321 deals valued at US$49.2 billion. That represented only a modest 1 per cent increase in volume and 12 per cent growth in value over the prior year. Deal values in the UAE and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia accounted for US$9.8 billion out of that total. Looking at the broader picture, 2024 closed with 701 MENA M&A deals worth US$92.3 billion, reflecting a 3 per cent rise in deal volume and 7 per cent gain in value compared with 2023. Cross-border transactions were the primary engine, making up 52 per cent of deal volume and 74 per cent of value. The UAE's growing prominence in M&A stems from both deliberate policy reforms and strategic positioning. Domestic investors, notably sovereign wealth funds and government-related entities such as ADIA and Mubadala, have been highly active across both home-market and international transactions. At the same time, global investors have responded favourably to the region's economic diversification efforts, regulatory clarity, and infrastructural thrust.

India's WABAG bags O&M contract for sewage treatment plant in Bahrain

Indian water technology company VA Tech Wabag (WABAG) has secured a repeat order worth about 5.12 million Bahraini Dinars ($13.6 million) for operation and maintenance (O&M) of the 40 million liters per day Madinat Salman sewage treatment plant (STP) and long sea outfall for five years. The contract was awarded by the Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning, the company said in a statement published on the National Stock Exchange. WABAG was earlier awarded the Engineering, Procurement and Construction of the STP and long sea outfall in October 2015. The project was completed in 2018, after which WABAG has been operating and maintaining this plant since November 1, 2018, to date. The STP is equipped with tertiary treatment and sludge treatment using aerobic digestion and thermal drying. An automatic bagging plant is provided to pack the EPA Class A Sludge from dryers for commercial sales. The treated water is reused and caters to the entire irrigation water requirements of 13 islands. 'This order further strengthens our O&M order book, providing annuity income, improved cash flows, and revenue predictability,' said General Manager – MENA RHQ Srinivasan K. In early August, Zawya Projects reported that a joint venture of Kuwait's Heisco and VA Tech WABAG submitted the lowest bid for a major desalination project in Kuwait. Last month, the company had announced that it has been awarded a $272 million (1,019 million Saudi riyals) contract to design and build a 300 million litres per day (300,000 cubic metres per day) mega sea water desalination plant in Yanbu, Saudi Arabia by Saudi Water Authority (SWA).
