The Middle East Is Getting a New Budget Airline

Just as Wizz Air announces its exit from Abu Dhabi, a new low-cost airline is preparing for take-off in the Middle East, promising to unlock a raft of new routes for regional travelers.
Saudi Arabia has officially granted an operating license to the yet-to-be-named budget carrier, which will be headquartered at King Fahd International Airport in the eastern city of Dammam.
The joint venture—backed by Sharjah-based Air Arabia, KUN Investment Holding, and Nesma—plans to serve 24 domestic and 57 international destinations by 2030, with the official route network set to be announced in the coming months.
According to Saudi Arabia's General Authority of Civil Aviation, the airline is targeting 10 million passengers a year by the end of the decade on a fleet of 45 aircraft.
The regulator said the move is part of a broader push to boost air connectivity in the kingdom's Eastern Province, ramp up seat capacity, and offer travelers more affordable flight options across the region and beyond.
While a formal launch date has yet to be confirmed, the new carrier is Saudi Arabia's second major airline debut in recent years, with Riyadh Air set for take-off later this year. Based out of Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport, the new airline will open up more than 100 destinations by 2030, making it easier for travelers to fly directly between Saudi Arabia and major cities in Europe, Asia, and North America.
The new budget carrier will be Saudi Arabia's second airline debut in recent years, with Riyadh Air scheduled to begin commercial flights by the end of 2025.

Riyadh Air has already ordered dozens of Boeing's 787-9 Dreamliners, which feature the largest windows of any jet currently in the skies, air that is more humid and pressurized at a lower cabin altitude, large overhead bins, and technology that senses and counters turbulence for a smoother ride.
At the Paris Air Show in 2023, Riyadh Air revealed its official indigo theme, with striking lines inspired by the twisting canopies of traditional Bedouin tents and the elegant curves of Arabic calligraphy. The bold look features a sweeping cockpit window design, with the signature color palette contrasting against a light iridescent fuselage that reflects 'purity and the future-focused vision of Saudi Arabia."
The launch of Riyadh Air coincides with the construction of a futuristic new airport for Riyadh, which is set to be one of the largest in the world and will welcome more than 120 million passengers annually by the end of the decade.

Former CNBC analyst James Arthur McDonald Jr., who betrayed investors, sentenced in multimillion-dollar fraud scheme

A former television financial analyst accused of defrauding investors out of millions of dollars and spending years on the run was sentenced to five years in prison, the Justice Department said Monday. James Arthur McDonald Jr., 53, is also expected to be ordered to pay restitution to his victims following his April 7 guilty plea for securities fraud. 'To his victims, [McDonald] seemed to embody the American Dream,' prosecutors argued in a sentencing memorandum. 'But looks can be deceiving, and as [McDonald's] victims learned, their trust had been betrayed.' McDonald, who frequently appeared as a guest on CNBC as a financial analyst, was arrested in June 2024 at his Florida home after spending years on the run and extradited back to California, where he was the CEO and chief investment officer of Los Angeles-based Hercules Investments LLC, and Index Strategy Advisors Inc. 3 James Arthur McDonald Jr. is expected to be ordered to pay restitution to his victims following his April 7 guilty plea for securities fraud. CNBC Prior to fleeing, McDonald also appeared to have terminated his previous phone and email accounts and told one person that he planned to 'vanish,' according to court documents. In 2020, McDonald 'lost tens of millions of dollars of Hercules client money after adopting a risky short position that effectively bet against the health of the United States economy in the aftermath of the U.S. presidential election,' prosecutors said. He misrepresented how the funds would be used and failed to disclose the 'massive losses' Hercules previously sustained. 3 Prior to fleeing, McDonald terminated his previous phone and email accounts and told one person that he planned to 'vanish'. FBI 'He misappropriated most of those funds in various ways, including spending $174,610 at a Porsche dealership and transferring $109,512 to the landlord of a home McDonald was renting in Arcadia,' the Justice Department said. In total, McDonald lost around $3 million of his clients' money, prosecutors said. With his other company, McDonald allegedly sent clients 'false account statements, including for one client who invested approximately $351,000, later needed the money to make a down payment on a home, was informed by McDonald that much of the money had been lost, and never got his full investment back.' 3 In total, McDonald lost around $3 million of his clients' money, prosecutors said. Hercules Investments In total, the US Securities and Exchange Commission said McDonald 'raised more than $5.1 million from 23 investors and clients, and misappropriated more than $2.9 million of those funds for personal expenses and Ponzi-like payments to earlier investors.' A federal arrest warrant was issued for McDonald in 2022 after he was charged with securities fraud. Fox News Digital's Greg Norman contributed to this report.

Warby Parker locations now open in Targets

Target has opened Warby Parker kiosks in Bloomington, Minnesota, and the Chicago suburbs, launching the Minneapolis-based retailer's latest brand partnership. The boutique-style space in Bloomington quietly began serving customers last week, holding a grand opening Saturday complete with blue balloons and giveaways. Even so, the new setup drew a steady stream of curious Target customers on Saturday looking for an eye exam or a fresh pair of frames. "Our goal has always been to make eyewear and eye care as accessible and convenient as possible," said Sandy Gilsenan, chief retail and customer experience officer at Warby Parker. "From the beginning, Target's customer-first mindset made them a natural partner for us." Target is known for brand partnerships, from limited ones like Lilly Pulitzer to permanent deals such as CVS pharmacy and Hearth and Home by Joanna Gaines of HGTV fame. Warby Parker and Target announced the partnership in February. Three other shop-in-shops will open in select Targets toward the end of the summer, with more expected in 2026. In the weeks before the launch, passersby could catch glimpses of Warby Parker's signature blue peeking out from behind branded paper covering the storefront. The eyewear company now has seven locations in Minnesota. The addition of Warby Parker at Target marks a second location in Bloomington. Similar to Target's owned brands, Warby Parker frames are focused on affordability and designer-quality alternatives. The Target shops are staffed and stocked by the eyewear company. Target acts more as a landlord, similar to its arrangement with CVS and Target Optical. Each store will offer Warby Parker's full assortment of eyewear and optical services, including glasses, sunglasses, contacts, eye exams and vision tests. Target Optical, operated by EssilorLuxottica since 2004, carries popular brands like Ray-Ban and Oakley. The Warby Parker locations will not have Target Optical hubs, which can be found at more than 500 stores. Some analysts, who have perceived a lack of consistent newness in Target's inventory, say the Warby Parker partnership makes sense. "(The partnership) shows some good thinking on the part of Target. However, a lot more of this is needed to move the dial," said Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData Retail. "Newness also needs to extend to the core products and brands as this is where some staleness has crept in." At the end of the day, eyewear is not a core product at Target, he said. The company has pledged to bring more newness to product assortment as part of its growth strategy, driven largely by partnerships with other companies. "There's so much newness across discretionary, like our new Pillowfort collections, featuring Disney and Marvel ... or the exciting Warby Parker partnership," Rick Gomez, chief commercial officer at Target, said in a March earnings call. In April, Target rolled out a limited-time collection with Kate Spade, followed more recently by a collaboration with Champion to bring in activewear and sporting goods for adults and kids.
