Former police chief fined RM20k for 40 corruption charges in Kuantan
Judge Sazlina Safie ordered a RM500 fine per charge, with a one-month jail term if unpaid, which the accused settled immediately.
Anuar Yaakob, 56, allegedly received bribes ranging from RM150 to RM1,000 via bank transfers during his tenure at Pahang Contingent police HQ and Cherating station.
The offences occurred between January 2021 and September 2022 while he performed official duties.
He was charged under Section 165 of the Penal Code, punishable by up to two years' jail, a fine, or both.
Deputy public prosecutor Ezuain Farhana Ahmad represented the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), while lawyer Mohd Baharuddin Ahmad Kassim defended Anuar.
The court considered the remaining 58 charges under Section 171A of the Criminal Procedure Code as part of a plea bargain.
Anuar had initially faced all 98 charges in August 2023, involving RM31,400 in bribes. – Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR: A housewife has been charged at a Magistrate's Court here over the death of her seven-month old adopted daughter. Siti Subrina Imran, 37, who was accused of murder, nodded her head to signal that she understood the charge after it was read out before Magistrate Noorelynna Hanim Abd Halim here on Thursday (Aug 7). Kuala Lumpur acting police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad confirmed that police received an emergency call from a man claiming that his adopted daughter had been found unconscious at their home for unknown reasons. He added that upon arrival at the residence, police found the infant lying in the living room, with visible bruising and bluish skin.

Nov 4 decision on Chegubard's sedition case defence
KUALA LUMPUR: The Sessions Court today fixed Nov 4 to decide whether Bersatu Port Dickson division chief Badrul Hisham Shaharin will enter his defence or be acquitted in a sedition case. Judge Norma Ismail scheduled the date after deputy public prosecutor Nursyuhada Husna Sulaiman confirmed the prosecution had closed its case. 'The court has set Sept 9 for written submissions, Oct 9 for counter-submissions, and Nov 4 for the decision,' said the judge. Badrul Hisham, represented by counsel Muhammad Rafique Rashid Ali, faces charges over remarks allegedly tarnishing the King's reputation. Four prosecution witnesses, including an Istana Negara complainant and MCMC officers, testified since the trial began on May 16. The 45-year-old, known as Chegubard, was charged on April 29, 2024, under Section 500 of the Penal Code. The offence carries a maximum two-year jail term, a fine, or both if convicted. - Bernama

Kuching contractor jailed 9 months for punching wife

KUCHING (Aug 7): A contractor who punched his wife in the head, neck, and eye three years ago was sentenced to nine months in jail by the Magistrates' Court here today. Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan ordered for Chan Hua Boo, 57, to begin his custodial sentence from today. Chan pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 323 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 326A of the same Code. Section 323 provides for a maximum one year in prison, or a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, while Section 326A allows for a sentence of up to twice the maximum term upon conviction for an offence under Section 323 if the victim is a spouse. According to the charge, Chan intentionally caused hurt to his then 37-year-old wife at around 8pm in a rented house in Kenyalang Park here on May 26, 2022. Based on the facts of the case, the victim had checked closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage on her mobile phone and discovered that Chan had removed her car battery. She then asked Chan for her car keys to inspect the vehicle's condition. However, Chan lost his temper and proceeded to punch her on the left side of her head, back of her neck, and above her left eye. As a result, the victim sustained bruises and swelling in those areas. Fearing a repeat of the incident, she lodged a police report for further action. Police arrested Chan on May 28, 2022. The investigation found that the incident was witnessed by another woman who was also renting a room at the house and that the assault had been captured on the CCTV recording. A medical report confirmed that the victim sustained swelling on the left temporal area of her head and around her left eye. It is also understood that the victim and Chan were in the process of getting a divorce at the time of the incident.
