Chase appointed West Indies test captain
All-rounder Roston Chase has been appointed captain of the West Indies test team, succeeding Kraigg Brathwaite, Cricket West Indies announced.
After Brathwaite stepped down in March, CWI put short-listed candidates through a process that included "psychometric testing to evaluate leadership style" before choosing the 33-year-old Chase, the board said in a statement on Friday.
Other short-listed candidates included John Campbell, Tevin Imlach, Joshua Da Silva, Justin Greaves and Jomel Warrican.
Warrican has been named Chase's deputy, while white-ball captain Shai Hope requested not to be considered for test captaincy.
"I fully endorse this appointment," head coach Daren Sammy said in the CWI statement.
"Our new captain has earned the respect of his peers, understands the responsibility that comes with the role and has shown the leadership qualities we need to take this team forward.
"I urge fans across the region to rally behind him - we're building something special."
Spin-bowling all-rounder Chase, who played the last of his 49 tests in March 2023, will begin his captaincy with a three-match home series against Australia on June 25. REUTERS

Tuchel wants relentless energy in attack from England against Andorra
BARCELONA - England go into their World Cup qualifier against Andorra as heavy favourites but the players will find it challenging to find the energy to attack relentlessly after a long and gruelling season, coach Thomas Tuchel said on Friday. England are top of Group K after two games with a perfect record while Andorra are bottom with two losses ahead of Saturday's game in Barcelona. Tuchel said England are fully committed to the qualifier where he wants "a win that is never in danger" but also said fans should not "over-expect" them to go all guns blazing right from the start of the game. "It will be on us to get going, it is on us to keep the tempo high, to bring the attacking energy to the pitch and to do this in a relentless way," Tuchel told reporters. "I can fully understand that this is not the easiest time of the season for an international break. The players come from a long and tiring season and then again accepting the role to be responsible for the majority of the game can be demanding. "But at the same time, what I feel from the group is that they are happy to be here. We are quite new together, it is our second camp and I have trust and belief that we will do what is necessary to get the result that we want." Tuchel said England have embraced the tag as huge favourites, promising an attacking lineup that will dominate possession while he is not looking to experiment by using this match as an audition for new players. "The focus will be on the attacking patterns, on our hunger for and the reaction after ball losses, for the counter-pressing," he added. "These will be the main topics for tomorrow and this will then guide and demand the tactics. "My thoughts are not so much whom can we see and what do we try. It's more about the game plan since two days and who trains well... After a long season, putting players together from which we feel they have a connection and then they can show." Tuchel has also done his homework on Andorra, describing the European minnows as a well-drilled and well-organised side in a 5-4-1 formation. "They don't allow a huge amount of big chances," the German coach said. "So we need a mix between being patient and at the same time speed the game up, bring the speed to the game and try to never lose the focus." Rallying-Ogier leads after tough first day in Sardinia
Toyota's Sebastien Ogier led Rally Italy in Sardinia on Friday after surging from third to first on the final stage of the first full day of action after rivals hit trouble. Hyundai's reigning world champion Thierry Neuville retired on stage five after taking the lead on the fourth stage of the Olbia-based rally in northern Sardinia and then hitting an earth bank. Adrien Fourmaux was in second place, 2.1 seconds behind eight-times world champion Ogier, with Hyundai teammate Ott Tanak third on the gravel tracks. Last year's winner Tanak completed the leg with a damaged shock absorber and 5.2 seconds behind Fourmaux. Toyota's double world champion Kalle Rovanpera was down in fifth place with championship-leading teammate Elfyn Evans sixth after being the first driver to set out and effectively sweeping the road. "It's been a good day, for sure," commented Ogier. "I've done everything I could today, so I'm happy with that." M-Sport Ford's Martins Sesks rolled out while teammates Josh McErlean and Gregoire Munster retired with suspension damage in the morning action on the same new Telti-Calangianus-Berchidda stage that caught out Neuville later. M-Sport expected at least two of the three to resume on Saturday. "That stage where all the drama happened was very tricky,' said Ogier. "It's super narrow and extremely fast. It's always a surprise to see that many incidents, but it can happen very easily there." The rally, round six of the championship, continues on Saturday with more than 120km of timed action.
