Sabah Softwoods Berhad on its eucalyptus exports
Published on: Sat, May 03, 2025 Text Size: 'Over the last 52 years, we have consistently operated with professionalism, delivering quality timber while supporting Sabah's economy and people,' Arsad said. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Softwoods Berhad (SSB) has hit back at recent claims and negative perceptions circulating online regarding the company's eucalyptus timber exports. In a statement, the company addressed what it termed as attempts to mislead the public about its operations and the broader image of Sabah's timber industry. A Facebook post regarding the company's eucalyptus timber exports sparked a wave of misinformed comments, with many suggesting that SSB was violating regulations and harming the environment. Datuk Mohd Arsad Bistari, Chairman of SSB, said the company's operations were fully compliant with Malaysian laws and closely monitored by the Sabah Forestry Department and Customs Department. 'We take these attempts to tarnish our reputation very seriously. SSB has always adhered to the highest standards of legality and sustainability in our timber exports. All of our operations are transparent, and we ensure full compliance with national regulations as well as international standards,' he said. He emphasised that SSB's operations are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), a global authority that sets the benchmark for responsible forest management, as well as the Sabah Timber Legality Assurance System (TLAS), ensuring that timber is legally sourced and traceable through a certified supply chain. 'These certifications provide assurance that our timber is harvested in a way that protects the environment and the people of Sabah. 'We are proud of the work we do and the positive impact it has on the local community, especially through the benefits it brings to Yayasan Sabah,' he said. The Chairman also highlighted the historical significance of SSB's role in Sabah's timber industry, noting that the company had earned the trust of past leaders. He pointed to the decision by former Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal, who exempted SSB from the tropical log export ban in 2018, as recognition of the company's contribution to the state. 'Over the last 52 years, we have consistently operated with professionalism, delivering quality timber while supporting Sabah's economy and people,' Arsad added. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? KLIA achieves global departure efficiency with airspace enhancements
KUALA LUMPUR: The Kuala Lumpur International Airport has achieved global standards in departure efficiency through significant airspace enhancements. The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia confirmed this major milestone in Malaysia's air traffic management capabilities. CAAM successfully conducted Simultaneous Independent Parallel Departure Operations on KLIA's triple runway system. This achievement marks a new benchmark in operational excellence for the aviation authority. The operation allows aircraft to depart simultaneously and independently from all three parallel runways. This enables three take-offs at the same time without any sequencing delays. The procedure incorporates strict separation standards and advanced air traffic management systems. It ensures the highest levels of safety while significantly reducing delays. The system also optimises traffic flow and dramatically increases departure capacity. This initiative builds upon the earlier Simultaneous Independent Parallel Approach Operations Based on Flight Direction. That enhancement was introduced in October 2024 and revolutionized arrival procedures. Both enhancements streamline aircraft arrival and departure routes within the Kuala Lumpur Terminal Manoeuvring Area. This area serves as a critical hub for Malaysian and regional airspace operations. Performance data from May 2025 shows KLIA recorded an 86.54 per cent departure route efficiency. This slightly exceeds the global benchmark of 86.34 per cent for major international airports. Despite a 15 per cent increase in air traffic volume since October 2024, the airport achieved additional improvements. Arrival route efficiency saw a 1.34 per cent enhancement during the same period. CAAM chief executive officer Datuk Captain Norazman Mahmud emphasized the significance of these advancements. These developments demonstrate CAAM's commitment to innovation, safety, and efficiency in Malaysian airspace management. By adopting international best practices and advanced procedures, Malaysia positions itself as a regional leader. Malaysia is establishing itself as a frontrunner in regional air traffic management excellence. CAAM will continue close collaboration with Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad and airline partners. This ensures that improvements in airspace operations translate to ground efficiency gains. The authority will maintain close monitoring of the initiative's performance and implementation. Expansion plans include rolling out these improvements across Malaysia's national airspace system. This supports growing aviation demand and strengthens industry confidence nationwide. These enhancements reinforce Malaysia's position as a leading regional aviation hub. - Bernama

StashAway Malaysia introduces syriah-compliant investment portfolios
KUALA LUMPUR: StashAway Malaysia, a digital wealth management platform, is targeting RM80 million in investments within the next 12 months through its newly launched syariah global portfolios designed to offer Malaysians globally diversified syariah-compliant investment solutions. Its country manager, Wai Ken Wong, said the company decided to venture into syariah-compliant investing and introduce it to the Malaysian market, given the significance of the segment. 'As you can see, the syariah fund management industry accounts for about 20% to 25% of the overall market, valued at RM263 billion. Thus, we have to be part of this demand,' he said at a media briefing in conjunction with the product launch today. Wai noted that syariah global portfolios are also being introduced in Singapore and the United Arab Emirates, in addition to Malaysia, saying that while the take-up rate is still small, it is growing quickly. He added that as a digital fund manager operating under the Securities Commission Malaysia's digital investment manager licence, the regulator has been highly supportive of all its product offerings. Thus, he said the syariah global portfolios are intended to be mainstream rather than cutting-edge, building on the firm's existing multi-asset global portfolios to provide a yesterday -compliant alternative for investors. In a statement, the company said these syariah-compliant diversified portfolios have delivered back-tested returns of up to 14.4% annually over the past five years. 'The portfolios have demonstrated strong five-year annualised historical returns ranging from 7.3% to 14%, positioning the company competitively against conventional investment options,' it said. Built with low-cost syariah-compliant exchange-traded funds, which have ample liquidity and low tracking errors, clients benefit from efficient execution.

ACCCIM: Malaysia can tap Heilongjiang's agritech to enhance food security
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia can tap the expertise of the agriculture sector in China's Heilongjiang Province, which has achieved scale, mechanisation, digitalisation and smart innovation. Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCCIM) president Datuk Ng Yih Pyng said Heilongjiang's advanced agricultural machinery ensures efficient sowing, precision irrigation, remote-sensing field management and high-performance planting. With these technologies, he added, more farmland is shifting from 'farmers' fields' to 'experts' fields'. 'For Malaysia, these experiences are highly valuable. Currently, our rice self-sufficiency rate is about 60%, with the remaining 40% dependent on imports. 'For staple rice, domestic production falls short of demand. Thus, Heilongjiang's model of modern agriculture not only offers us opportunities for collaboration but also points the way forward for our own agricultural modernisation. 'Agricultural modernisation is not merely about technology upgrades – it is also key to attracting young people into agriculture. With artificial intelligence, big data, and the Internet of Things, agriculture can be efficient, predictable, and even creative,' Ng said at the China (Heilongjiang)–Malaysia Economic and Trade Exchange Conference today. Heilongjiang is China's largest grain producer, often referred to as the 'Northern Granary'. Its annual cultivated grain area exceeds 14.7 million hectares, with total grain output surpassing 75 million tonnes for seven consecutive years and ranking first in China for 15 straight years. 'I believe that if we can collaborate with Heilongjiang's agri-tech enterprises and research institutions and promote advanced planting, processing, and logistics technologies locally, we can inspire more young Malaysian entrepreneurs to venture into agriculture and transform it into a high-tech, promising industry,' Ng said. ACCCIM, in early 2016, led a delegation to visit Heilongjiang and signed a cooperation agreement with the Heilongjiang Federation of Industry and Commerce, laying a foundation for bilateral economic, trade, and cultural exchanges. Ng believes that this conference and face-to-face exchange and sharing will further expand areas of cooperation and elevate bilateral economic and trade ties between Malaysia and Heilongjiang to new heights. Beyond agriculture and trade, he said, Malaysia and Heilongjiang also complement each other strongly in tourism. Malaysia enjoys summer all year round, while Heilongjiang has long and cold winters. This contrast offers tourists from both sides fresh and unique travel experiences. 'With the implementation of mutual visa exemptions between Malaysia and China and the upcoming Visit Malaysia Year 2026, the bilateral tourism market is poised for a new round of growth. 'More importantly, Malaysia will be the Country of Honour at the 2026 Harbin International Economic and Trade Fair (Harbin Fair),' Ng said. As one of China's key platforms for international economic and trade cooperation, the Harbin Fair will allow Malaysian enterprises to directly access broader markets in Northeast China as well as Russia and Mongolia. 'I urge tourism players from both sides to deepen cooperation in seasonal travel packages, cultural exchange activities, and joint promotional programmes. This will not only drive tourist numbers but also plant seeds of understanding and friendship in our peoples' hearts,' Ng said. Heilongjiang, he added, has the advantage of agricultural technology to learn from, complementary food trade, and interconnected tourism markets. 'As long as we continue to promote direct business-to-business linkages, strengthen government-chamber coordination, and broaden diversified cooperation, the economic and trade ties between Malaysia and Heilongjiang will only grow stronger and wider,' Ng said.
