Eco group invites everyone along to big family picnic at Inverclyde beauty spot

AN Inverclyde eco group is getting ready to celebrate its 'Take a Pride in Inverclyde' campaign with a massive family picnic at the beach. Hundreds of local people are expected to come along to the event, which has been organised by Green Tangerine. A similar event took place last year - and Green Tangerine, previously known as Literati Guide to Inverclyde, is getting set to do it all again with a five-star line-up for all the family. This year's event will also celebrate the local residents and groups who joined in the Big Clyde Beach Clean between March 21 and April 21, which saw Green Tangerine at the forefront of the local community's efforts to keep the Inverclyde shoreline litter-free. There will be music on the day from singer Shelagh McKay Jones as well as cycling, outdoor games and nature walks. Lunderston Bay will host Green Tangerine's 'Big Family Picnic' on May 18. (Image: contributed) Green Tangerine co-ordinator Annette Thain said: "We hope families will bring along a sustainable picnic and enjoy what's on offer during the afternoon." The bumper picnic takes place at Lunderston Bay on Sunday May 18, with the aim of celebrating Inverclyde's nature and outdoor space as well as the active travel initiatives. The activities will include a creative arts workshop, music, cycling, nature walks, games on the beach, a campfire, a Bookbug session run by Inverclyde Libraries, a demo by the British Divers Marine Life Rescue and much more. RIG Arts will host a drop-in creative workshop inside a mobile art workshop, with a focus on the climate. There will be a chance to try a hands-on craft session with waste saved from landfill, while learning about single use plastics. Throughout the day there will be a litter pick, with free ice cream tokens for kids who fill a bag with rubbish, a nature walk with the Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park ranger, and a campfire and marshmallows. Lunderston Bay will host the Big Family Picnic event for a second year. (Image: contributed) The British Divers Marine Life Rescue charity will have a demo and information tent while the Inverclyde Shed is also there on the day. Green Tangerine is also encouraging 'active travel' to the event, with a special walk and cycle from Gourock to the picnic venue being organised by the Lyle Gateway initiative's new walks team. They will meet at Gourock railway station (the meeting point is the area to the left of the snack van outside the station's front entrance) from 10.20am, and the walk will begin 10.30am. To book a place contact contact Jenni@ or call on 07474 786428. The picnic will be held two days after the official launch of the Lyle Gateway's walks programme, which has been taken on by the initiative after the closure of the Inverclyde Bothy at the end of March.

Evansville joins nationwide Celebrate Trails Day initiative

VANDERBURGH COUNTY, Ind. (WEHT) — Evansville joins a nationwide initiative to celebrate America's 42,000 miles of trails. Several organizations and the Evansville Area Trails Coalition is taking part in Celebrate Trails Day at Burdette Park. It's a day of action to showcase the amenities which some say improve the quality of life for residents. The local organizations are featuring the USI-Burdette trail to keep everyone informed about the resource, especially if they live on the other side of town. 'What's wonderful about it is that we get to feature and bring to light some of our local amenities. Some of the people on the far east side may not know or have experienced this trail. We're highlighting this trail so that people can come with other trail blazers if you want to walk or bike or roll and just experience nature while they're out on a multi-use trail,' says Evansville Area Trails Coalition Executive Director Lorie Van Hook. Van Hook says there's upcoming urban hikes over the summer. That includes Walk & Bike to School Day coming up on May 7.
