He framed the celebrations as a reminder of past sacrifices for independence, which he said extends beyond colonial liberation to overcoming poverty and division. On development, Hajiji noted the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) Plan 1.0 has achieved a 94% implementation rate across 467 initiatives as of May 2025.
Priority sectors include agriculture, industry, and tourism, alongside human capital and infrastructure. Public aid programs, such as education access and the Sabah People's Protection Insurance Scheme, were also highlighted.
The event concluded with the Sabah-level Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang convoy launch, covering 2,500 km across 27 districts over 20 days. - Bernama

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the project, to be implemented through the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID), was approved under the Fifth Rolling Plan (RP5) of the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) for 2025. 'The main scope of the project involves the construction of riverbank stabilisation structures to overcome the problem of collapsing riverbanks in the affected areas,' he said in his written answer to Serian MP Dato Sri Richard Riot Jaem in Parliament today. The parliamentary reply was shared to The Borneo Post by Riot's office. Fadillah said survey and detailed design works will be carried out this year, while physical construction is expected to begin in mid-2027. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : A three-way pact among Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional for the upcoming Sabah state election is unlikely to materialise, says a GRS leader. Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah vice-president Masiung Banah played down Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's hopes of a pact among the three major coalitions to prevent seat clashes, saying his party would surely disagree with this move. Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah is one of the eight component parties in GRS. Masiung said such an alliance could confuse voters, when GRS and PH have already agreed to join forces for the state election, Sinar Harian reported. 'There's little chance of such a cooperation to be reached. But if it does materialise, we hold to the prime minister's statement on May 11 that (GRS chairman) Hajiji Noor should lead negotiations on seat allocation,' he said. The four-term Kuamut assemblyman said GRS and Sabah PH have already formed a solid working partnership, which his party intended to fully stick to. 'GRS has also lost confidence in BN-Umno because they betrayed the partnership they had forged with GRS through the 'Kinabalu Move'. 'At the same time, BN-Umno has also decided not to work with GRS. We hope the prime minister will respect our stand,' he said. Yesterday, Anwar said talks were ongoing among BN, GRS and PH to reach an understanding to avoid three-cornered contests in the state election. The PH chairman and PKR president previously hoped that all three coalitions would be able to work together for the polls. Hajiji, the Sabah chief minister, announced on July 27 that GRS and PH had agreed to form an alliance for the election. BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi also said the coalition's cooperation with PH in Sabah was 'locked in'. However, as both BN and GRS are not formally working with one another, the two coalitions are expected to clash in the state election, due to be held by the end of the year. Sabah Umno and GRS used to be allies in the state government, but their partnership collapsed after Sabah Umno chief Bung Moktar Radin tried but failed to unseat Hajiji as chief minister in January 2023, in a move dubbed the 'Kinabalu Move'.

Over 60,000 workers in Sabah registered as union members
KOTA KINABALU: A total of 60,764 workers in Sabah are registered as trade union members, according to Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. The breakdown includes 22,317 government employees, 35,194 private sector workers, and 3,253 from statutory bodies. Currently, Sabah has 92 registered trade unions, managed by the Sabah Trade Union Affairs Department. These consist of 23 government sector unions, 52 private sector unions, and 16 representing statutory bodies. Hajiji highlighted that Sabah's workforce exceeded 1.7 million last year, contributing significantly to the state's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of RM84.3 billion. 'This growth has notably strengthened GDP, especially in key sectors like agriculture, manufacturing, construction, mining, and services,' he said during the Sabah state-level Labour Day celebration. Present at the event were Human Resources Minister Steven Sim, CUEPACS president Datuk Dr Adnan Mat, and Trade Union Affairs Department director-general Mohd Asri Abdul Wahab. Hajiji urged trade unions to be more proactive in protecting workers' welfare amid globalisation and technological advancements. 'Unions play a vital role in ensuring fair wages, skills development, workplace safety, and social security,' he said. The Sabah government supports trade unions as strategic partners, aiming to empower workers and uphold their rights.
