GRS-PH-BN pact for polls unlikely, says Gagasan Rakyat VP
PETALING JAYA : A three-way pact among Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional for the upcoming Sabah state election is unlikely to materialise, says a GRS leader.
Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah vice-president Masiung Banah played down Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's hopes of a pact among the three major coalitions to prevent seat clashes, saying his party would surely disagree with this move.
Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah is one of the eight component parties in GRS.
Masiung said such an alliance could confuse voters, when GRS and PH have already agreed to join forces for the state election, Sinar Harian reported.
'There's little chance of such a cooperation to be reached. But if it does materialise, we hold to the prime minister's statement on May 11 that (GRS chairman) Hajiji Noor should lead negotiations on seat allocation,' he said.
The four-term Kuamut assemblyman said GRS and Sabah PH have already formed a solid working partnership, which his party intended to fully stick to.
'GRS has also lost confidence in BN-Umno because they betrayed the partnership they had forged with GRS through the 'Kinabalu Move'.
'At the same time, BN-Umno has also decided not to work with GRS. We hope the prime minister will respect our stand,' he said.
Yesterday, Anwar said talks were ongoing among BN, GRS and PH to reach an understanding to avoid three-cornered contests in the state election.
The PH chairman and PKR president previously hoped that all three coalitions would be able to work together for the polls.
Hajiji, the Sabah chief minister, announced on July 27 that GRS and PH had agreed to form an alliance for the election. BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi also said the coalition's cooperation with PH in Sabah was 'locked in'.
However, as both BN and GRS are not formally working with one another, the two coalitions are expected to clash in the state election, due to be held by the end of the year.
Sabah Umno and GRS used to be allies in the state government, but their partnership collapsed after Sabah Umno chief Bung Moktar Radin tried but failed to unseat Hajiji as chief minister in January 2023, in a move dubbed the 'Kinabalu Move'.

Cambodia-Thailand conflict negotiation, Madani govt debt among focus of Dewan Rakyat today
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's role in facilitating peace talks and a ceasefire in the Thailand-Cambodia conflict is among the focus of Dewan Rakyat sitting today. Based on the Order Paper on the Parliament portal, the matter was raised by Rodiyah Sapiee (GPS-Batang Sadong) to the Prime Minister during Minister's Question Time. In the same session, Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (PN-Kuala Kangsar) also sought clarification from the Prime Minister on whether the Madani Government was managing the national debt responsibly. Meanwhile, in the question and answer session, Isnaraissah Munirah Majilis (Warisan-Kota Belud) asked the Foreign Minister about the proposed Joint Development with Indonesia in the ND 6 and ND 7 Ambalat blocks. She also wanted to know whether the same method would be used through the Malaysia-Thailand Joint Development Authority (MTJDA) or another method given that the rights of Sabah as well as Sarawak are protected under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63). Datuk Che Mohamad Zulkifly Jusoh (PN-Besut) asked the Prime Minister to state the government's decision after a holistic engagement session with stakeholders regarding the status of the establishment of the Malaysian Ombudsman, as well as the next steps to expedite its establishment. In addition, Jimmy Puah Wee Tse (PH-Tebrau) asked the Minister of Defence if the ministry had plans to integrate the use of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology in the country's air defence system. The Dewan Rakyat sitting will then resume with the debate session on the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13) motion tabled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim last Thursday.

Targeted RON95 petrol subsidies to be announced by end-Sept 2025
KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Finance (MoF) said the detailed implementation plans for targeted subsidies for RON95 petrol will be announced by end-September 2025, in line with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's statement on July 23, 2025. In a written parliamentary reply, MoF said the government is actively developing and testing the subsidy targeting mechanism to ensure smooth execution upon rollout. 'This includes refining data from agencies such as the National Registration Department, Road Transport Department (JPJ), and the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DoSM),' it said. 'The government aims to adopt a more comprehensive approach to ensure RON95 subsidies reach the intended target groups.' MoF was responding to a question from Hulu Langat Member of Parliament, Pakatan Harapan's Mohd Sany Hamzan, who asked for an update on the subsidy retargeting implementation, particularly the front-end and back-end phases announced by the Ministry of Economy. According to MoF, once implemented, the retargeted subsidy mechanism will allow eligible Malaysians to enjoy RON95 at RM1.99 per litre through MyKad verification. Non-citizens and those ineligible for the subsidy will pay the unsubsidised market rate. - Bernama
