Celtic left with plenty to do after goalless stalemate with Kairat Almaty
However, with Yang Hyun-jun on for Adam Idah and Daizen Maeda moving to centre forward at the start of the second half, Celtic stepped up the pace and piled on the pressure in the later stages but could not find a way through despite 10 added minutes. After Saturday's home William Hill Premiership game against Livingston, Celtic will get ready for the return leg in Kazakhstan next Tuesday night which involves a 7,000-mile round trip knowing qualification requires perhaps more work than many anticipated. Much of the build-up to the game was centred on if and when Rodgers would add to his squad for the European campaign. There were no late signings, but Rodgers made six changes to his side, with Kasper Schmeichel, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Liam Scales, Reo Hatate, Benjamin Nygren and Idah returning and Viljami Sinisalo, Dane Murray, Auston Trusty, Arne Engels, Luke McCowan and Johnny Kenny dropping out. Rafael Urazbakhtin stressed his side were playing for the glory of Kazakhstan and the Kairat head coach was pinning a lot of hopes on 17-year-old Chelsea-bound Dastan Satpayev. Celtic's Alistair Johnston is placed on to a stretcher by medical staff (Andrew Milligan/PA) The visitors settled early and in the 11th minute captain Aleksandr Martynovich had the ball in the Hoops net from close range but was offside. With Satpayev influential, Kairat attacked fluidly and at pace on the counter, dampening the mood of the expectant home support. In the 32nd minute, Celtic defender Alastair Johnston pulled up with what looked like a hamstring injury as he backtracked and was taken from the field on a stretcher, replaced by Anthony Ralston. Moments later, Kairat goalkeeper Alexandr Zarutskiy saved from Maeda when Celtic at last got through, but at the other end Ofri Arad's powerful drive flew just wide of Schmeichel's post. Temirlan Anarbekov wore a protective cap after sustaining a knock (Andrew Milligan/PA) Yang for Idah for the start of the second period and Maeda moving central was no surprise and within a minute Yang set up James Forrest, whose shot was touched onto a post and then gathered by Zarutskiy. In the 58th minute, after some sloppiness by Carter-Vickers in the Hoops defence, Brazilian striker Edmilson tried a speculative shot from 40 yards and it landed on the roof of Schmeichel's goal. Celtic's corner count mounted but to no avail and Hoops fans – perhaps also frustrated by a lack of transfer activity – began singing 'sack the board' as the game moved into the final quarter. In the 75th minute, after sustaining an injury defending a corner, Zarutskiy had to be replaced by understudy Temirlan Anarbekov and he had his head bandaged and covered by a protective cap after taking a knock. The visitors, though, were wasting time at every opportunity and 10 added minutes gave Celtic scope, but Maeda spurned a gift when he ran through alone and could only manage a tame shot which was easily saved by Anarbekov and there were boos at the end from irate supporters.

Boy, 10, thrilled by surprise AC/DC tickets but concertgoers spoil special night
Michaela Burns, 33, from St Helens, treated her son Henry Heaney for tickets to see his favourite band AC/DC for his 10th birthday at the Stade de France in Paris A mum has claimed her son's birthday was spoiled by an "awful" experience at a French stadium. Michaela Burns, 33, from St Helens, surprised her son Henry Heaney with tickets to see his favourite band AC/DC for his 10th birthday at the Stade de France in Paris. Michaela kept the surprise until they reached the hotel and captured his reaction on film for his dad to watch back home, with Henry declaring it as his "best birthday ever". However, she says their experience at the stadium was marred by other spectators smoking and vaping around him. Henry is asthmatic and had previously suffered a respiratory attack when he was younger, which resulted in him being rushed to Alder Hey Children's Hospital. A new smoking ban introduced in France last month prohibits the smoking of cigarettes in all outdoor places frequented by children, including stadiums like the Stade de France. A spokesperson for the stadium has apologised for spectators not adhering to this rule. Henry began showing symptoms of a respiratory attack as the air filled with smoke before being taken to the stadium's first aid room, where he experienced a panic attack. He later received treatment at a local hospital before being discharged with a prescription, reports the Liverpool Echo. Speaking to the ECHO, Michaela said: "As soon as we got there, there were people vaping and smoking. That's why I went to the ticket office and luckily there was no issue. "I asked to move partly because he couldn't see, but partly because of the smoking. I mentioned it to her and she said we are a non-smoking venue, so anyone seen smoking should be kicked out. "So then they gave us the seats and literally as the show started, people started lighting up. We saw a few stewards walking around telling people off but I didn't see anyone leave. Henry started showing symptoms of a respiratory attack. Then he had a panic attack in the first aid room." Michaela says she and Henry fear they may never get the chance to see AC/DC live again. She said: "He was in the middle of having a panic attack and he was apologising. I was saying to him, you've got nothing to apologise about. "I had a guilty feeling because I didn't realise how many people would be smoking in the venue. I expected a few, maybe at the front in the standing section, near the mosh pits and things like that. But I didn't expect it on the seats. "Henry knows how old they are and we're thinking their Edinburgh gig may be the last one they do in the UK. To go from that high of him being so excited for the gig to what happened, it's just awful." Henry began to recover but after they left the stadium, a security officer outside stopped them to say that he still looked unwell. He was then taken to Saint Denis Hospital where he was given oxygen and recovered. Michaela hopes to highlight how thoughtless behaviour can create difficulties for people suffering from breathing problems. She explained: "We can't be the only ones that struggled. There are plenty of people in the world that have respiratory issues and asthma. "We want to get it out there that non-smoking venues or areas of stadiums are kept as that and that stewards will be more vigilant to protect more vulnerable fans like Henry whose deserved dream concert ended so suddenly." A spokesperson for the Stade de France said: "We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused. We are aware of the new smoking bans that came into effect on July 1, 2025, which extend the 'smoke-free' zones in France. Stadiums are included in this. "We are doing our utmost to enforce this decree within the stadium, but some spectators' habits persist and it will take us a little time to adapt before we can become a completely 'smoke-free' zone. "This feedback is important to us, as it enables us to improve the quality of the welcome we offer to the public at the Stade de France."

Brighton's Enciso to join Strasbourg
Strasbourg are closing in on a move worth a total of £17.3m for Brighton forward Julio Enciso, with a view that he will play for Chelsea after a year in France. The 21-year-old is expected to finalise terms over a contract in the coming days with Brighton including a sell-on clause in the deal. Strasbourg are linked to Chelsea through their BlueCo ownership, led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, with the move for the Paraguay international potentially the most significant since the £65.2m takeover in 2023. There are significant connections between Chelsea and Strasbourg, who are managed by Englishman Liam Rosenior, with goalkeeper Mike Penders, Kendry Paez and Mamadou Sarr all on loan from Stamford have also signed multiple players from Chelsea, including Ishe Samuels-Smith, Mathis Amougou and Diego Moreira in the last two seasons while there is a host of ex-Premier League talent at the club from former Brighton defender Valentin Barco and former Southampton forward Sekou Alcase club qualified for the Conference League last season through a seventh-placed finish. Meanwhile, Enciso leaves Brighton having been left out of the squad for the opening day draw against Fulham. Enciso scored five goals for the Seagulls and spent the second half of last season on loan at Ipswich Town.
