Minister Uttam Reddy hits out at Harish Rao, rebuts allegations on paddy procurement
Minister for Civil Supplies and Irrigation N. Uttam Kumar Reddy on Tuesday hit back at former minister and Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader T. Harish Rao on the latter's allegations over paddy procurement and cited official statistics asking him to stop 'daily campaign of falsehoods'.
In a statement, Mr. Uttam Kumar Reddy stated that there was a sharp increase in paddy procurement during the current Rabi season. He stated that the government had procured 43.1 lakh tonnes of paddy as on May 12.
The data shared by the Minister revealed that the Telangana government had procured 43.1 lakh metric tonnes (LMTs) of paddy during the ongoing Rabi 2024–25 season, up to May 12. As on the same day last year, the Rabi procurement was 29.88 lakh tonnes and a year before (2022-23) it was only 19.62 lakh tonnes.
The statistics indicated nearly 44% jump over last year's procurement and more than 120% when compared to 2022-23, reflecting the current administration's proactive efforts, the Minister said.
The Minister stated that the Congress government had opened more procurement centres and streamlined operations to benefit farmers directly. Timely procurement had brought relief to paddy cultivators across Telangana as the government was ensuring Minimum Support Price (MSP) and also paying ₹500 bonus per quintal for fine varieties of paddy.
He highlighted the State's record-breaking paddy production in 2024-25 Kharif/Vanakalam season, when 153.5 lakh tonnes of paddy was produced in 66.7 lakh acres, while the ongoing Rabi/Yasangi crop covered 60.14 lakh acres with the yield estimated to be about 129 lakh tonnes — production of over 280 lakh tonnes in a year.
Meanwhile, sources stated that about 61.45% of the planned procurement (70.13 lakh tonnes) was completed so far by opening 8,245 procurement centres. Of the 43.1 lakh tonnes procured so far, 27.75 lakh tonnes was of common varieties and 15.35 lakh tonnes of fine varieties.
The value of paddy procured so far was ₹9,999.36 crore with 6.58 lakh farmers selling their produce. The farmers were made payments of ₹6,671 crore so far, including ₹767 crore paid as bonus to fine varieties.

BRS's ‘BC Kadhana Bheri' meeting postponed again due to heavy rain forecast
Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS)'s public meeting christened as 'BC Kadhana Bheri' scheduled to be held in Karimnagar on August 14 has been postponed due to forecast of heavy rains in the erstwhile Karimnagar district and elsewhere in the State in the next three days. The party leadership has chosen Karimnagar, the political nerve centre of north Telangana, for its 'BC Kadhana Bheri' to galvanise Backward Class (BC) communities to mount pressure on the government to implement the 42% reservations for BCs. Minister stresses need for strengthening CDO of Irrigation department
Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy stressed the need for the urgent need to strengthen and equip the Central Design Organisation of the Irrigation department with latest facilities and software. He said there was need for recruitment of top engineering talent, acquisition of cutting edge technology and strict adherence to timelines for project designs. The CDO, once pride of the State, had a chequered history. From designing the Nizam Sagar project a century ago to providing technical expertise for major schemes, the design department enjoyed its reputation. 'That standard must be restored now,' he said. The Minister's comments assume significance in the light of adverse comments from the National Dam Safety Authority and the Judicial Commission headed by Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose. Without going into the specifics, he said the remarks made it imperative to the government to review the organisation's functioning and initiate necessary reforms. The government could not allow the credibility of its own institution to erode and it was therefore decided to identify the gaps and fill them. Accordingly, it was resolved to fill all the vacancies in the CDO without delay with an aim to post talented and qualified engineers at all levels. There was need to assign engineers recruited from premier institutions like IITs and NITs to the organisation so as to bring fresh technical expertise and new approaches in designing. Recruiting alone was not sufficient and these engineers should be placed in position where they could have maximum impact as complex irrigation projects would require precision engineering. He instructed the officials concerned to procure latest state-of-the-art design software, modern equipment and advanced facilities on a war footing to ensure that the organisation delivered the best possible designs. Besides, domain experts whether serving or retired should be engaged as consultants on merit basis with focus on selectively appointing retired officers with proven expertise. Given the growing importance of electromechanical engineering, consultants with deep domain knowledge in the area should be engaged after thorough due diligence as this was a highly specialised area. 'We need experts who can foresee operational challenges and design accordingly,' he said.

BJP condemns party chief's ‘house arrest'
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has strongly condemned the house arrest of its State president N. Ramchander Rao which prevented him from participating in the party's scheduled 'Hoist the National Tricolour' campaign at households as part of Independence Day celebrations on Tuesday morning. Mr. Rao was slated to attend a series of programmes in the Secunderabad and Goshamahal constituencies. However, a group of policemen arrived at his Tarnaka residence and placed him under house arrest, anticipating his participation in a programme organized by the BJP women's wing at Peddamma Temple in Jubilee Hills. This action sparked widespread criticism from party leaders, including Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar, Mahabubnagar MP D.K. Aruna, former MLA N.V.S.S. Prabhakar, General Secretary K. Venkateshwarlu, Chief Spokesperson N.V. Subash, Women's Wing President Dr. Shilpa Reddy, and several others. Despite being occupied with the Parliament session in Delhi, Mr. Sanjay Kumar accused the Congress-led state government of orchestrating a conspiracy to secure votes from a particular community ahead of the upcoming Jubilee Hills by-election. 'The government is playing politics with Hindu sentiments for the sake of votes from one community. Meanwhile, Dr. Shilpa Reddy criticized the police for indiscriminately arresting members of the women's wing and preventing them from conducting a 'spiritual' programme at the Peddamma Temple. 'In a democracy, everyone has the right to religious expression. The government is trying to usurp these rights,' she said.
