Elio movie review: Pixar's take on E.T. is a rare misfire from the animation studio
In an industry where originality is becoming an increasing rarity, Pixar is one company that prides itself on carving out unique stories. But not every story lands perfectly, a thought that strikes when it comes to the animation giant's latest feature, Elio.
The tale of an orphaned boy who desperately wants to discover life in outer space, it's maybe the closest we've come to seeing Steven Spielberg's E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial rendered in cartoon form – despite having far less of an impact.
When we join Elio (voiced by Yonas Kibreab), he is hiding under a canteen table. We never find out what happened to his parents, but he is now the responsibility of his aunt Olga (Zoe Saldaña), who works on a military base.

Olga is kindly but unable to connect with her traumatised nephew. Instead, all he wants is to encounter interplanetary life forms. 'Aliens abduct me,' he scrawls in the sand on the beach near the base.
Then, as he is being bullied by some local kids, his wish comes true. He is spirited away to meet an array of colourful aliens – the so-called Communiverse.

Watch this and then watch Luca Guadagnino's 2015 remake, A Bigger Splash. Stranger by the Lake (Alain Guiraudie, 2013) – Also gorgeous and unnerving. Meet Hunter Doohan, who plays Tyler in Netflix's Wednesday
Hunter Doohan first appeared in Netflix hit Wednesday as the lovable barista Tyler Galpin – but, spoiler alert, he is later revealed to be the Hyde, a shape-shifting killer. Hong Kong universities shine at Silicon Valley tech festival with record 51 awards
Hong Kong has achieved record-breaking success at a US technology innovation event, securing 27 gold medals, 16 silver and eight special prizes. The innovation team from Lingnan University emerged as the biggest winner in its debut at the 11th Silicon Valley International Invention Festival, held in Santa Clara, California, from Friday to Sunday last week. It received 13 awards – eight gold medals and five prizes spanning fields such as artificial intelligence (AI), smart manufacturing and smart transport. Joe Qin, the university president and chair professor of data science, who led the delegation to the festival, said the achievement reflected international recognition of the scholars' high-quality research. He added that the win, along with successes in other competitions, also highlighted the university's strength in knowledge and technology transfer on the global stage. 'We are committed to becoming a leading liberal arts research university in the digital era and will continue to fully support our researchers in their pursuit of scientific breakthroughs,' Qin said. Among the university's winning projects is an AI-based fencing training system, which analyses fencers' movements and provides personalised feedback through wearable sensors and deep learning techniques. It won a gold medal as well as the Prize of the International Federation of Inventors' Association.
