Paddy procurement crossed 50 lakh tonnes: Telangana Minister Uttam Kumar
HYDERABAD: Irrigation & Civil Supplies Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy on Friday stated that the ongoing paddy procurement has crossed 50 lakh metric tonnes (LMT). Paddy procured during the corresponding period in 2023, when the BRS was in power, was 25.35 LMT, he said.
The minister held a review meeting with district collectors and other officials at the Secretariat virtually.
Ministers Thummala Nageswara Rao, Komatireddy Venkat Reddy and Ponnam Prabhakar also joined the video conference.
After the meeting, Uttam posted on X: 'I am happy to announce that we have now crossed 50 LMT of paddy procurement in Yasangi (Rabi) season. On the same day, 15 May 2023, during the previous regime, the total paddy procurement in Yasangi was 25.35 LMT.'
During the review meeting, comparative data was presented to underscore the scale of improvement over the previous years.
After analysing the figures, the minister pointed out that in the Rabi 2022–23 season, paddy procurement stood at 25.35 LMT, which increased to 32.93 LMT in Rabi 2023–24. 'This year, in the ongoing Rabi 2024–25 season, procurement has reached 49.53 LMT by mid-May, a historic high and a clear reflection of the Congress government's commitment to farmers,' he said and pointed out that lower procurement levels and inadequate infrastructure had caused operational delays and dissatisfaction among farmers in Rabi 2022–23.

Former minister and BRS leader Harish Rao has issued a robust defence of the Kaleshwaram project following criticisms. Presenting a detailed PowerPoint at Telangana Bhavan, Rao highlighted that the project has successfully supplied water to a total of 2.033 million acres. Rao noted that discussions regarding the project proceeded without any objections from Maharashtra, stating that he engaged with Maharashtra representatives to address concerns within 45 days of the government's formation. He said that the Kaleshwaram project encompasses three barrages, fifteen reservoirs, nineteen substations, twenty-one pump houses, 203 kilometres of tunnels, 1,531 kilometres of gravity canals, 98 kilometres of pressure mains, and a storage capacity of 141 TMC, with water lifts reaching heights of 530 metres. "Initially designed to source water from Tammidihati to Yellampalli, the project was relocated to Medigadda due to reduced water availability at Tammidihati. The Medigadda barrage was constructed in seven blocks and supported by 85 piers," Rao said Rao responded to Congress claims that farming had succeeded without Kaleshwaram, asserting that it is this very project that facilitated crop production in the Yasangi season. He emphasised that water availability via the project is sourced from three different locations, capable of filling thousands of tanks. "Everything built from Medigadda to Mallanna Sagar is operational," he added. The canal associated with the Kaleshwaram project alone is projected to provide water for 90,000 acres of land.

HYDERABAD: Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka on Friday alleged that the BRS leaders, when they were in power, looted the state like bandits. Referring to BRS MLC K Kavitha's recent remarks against her own party leaders, he said: 'Even their own family members are now exposing the BRS leaders.' The deputy CM was addressing a public meeting after laying the foundation for 12 sub-stations at Devarakadra. He emphasised that real democracy is being upheld now with funds being spent on public welfare under the leadership of Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy. Efforts are being made to transform Telangana into a globally competitive state, he added. After laying the stone for 12 sub-stations, he said that the government will fast-track the Palamuru-Rangareddy Lift Irrigation Scheme works by releasing required funds. He also announced that funds for R&R and land acquisition would be released immediately. 'The gap between the Narlapur and Edula reservoirs will be filled with necessary funding,' he said and recalled that when `70 crore was needed for the Uddandapur R&R package, the government released them without any hesitation. Referring to Krishna river water, he said the people of Palamuru region dreamed of utilising these waters, which is why they demanded a separate state. 'But during their 10-year rule, the previous rulers couldn't provide irrigation even to a single acre,' he said. The deputy CM also said that all major irrigation projects in the erstwhile Mahbubnagar district — Jurala, Koilsagar, Bheema, Nettempadu, and Kalwakurthy — were completed by the Congress governments. 'If the previous Congress government had given permission for the Palamuru-Rangareddy project, then in June 2015, KCR laid the foundation at Karivena and promised to complete it in three years. It's been 10 years... why couldn't he provide water?' he asked. Vikramarka hailed the free RTC bus travel scheme for women across the state and wondered why the 'financially sound' BRS government failed to implement it earlier. He said the current people's government aims to turn one crore women into crorepatis within five years. 'As part of this, within the first year of our rule, `21,000 crore interest-free loans have been given to self-help groups.' he said. 'You don't need to be an MLA to do business or get contracts,' he said and added, 'You need to elect MLAs who will raise the people's voice in the Assembly and protect democratic values. I congratulate the people of Mahbubnagar for electing such representatives.'

'Entire cabinet' took call on barrage sites, former finance minister Eatala tells Kaleshwaram panel
HYDERABAD: BJP MP and former finance minister Eatala Rajender on Friday told the Justice PC Ghose Commission of Inquiry that the decision to construct the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project, including the selection of barrage sites, was taken collectively by the 'entire Cabinet' and not by the Finance department. The commission posed 19 questions to Rajender and cross-examined him for 20 minutes. The Kaleshwaram Commission has summoned Rajender, former chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao and former Irrigation minister T Harish Rao for cross-examination. Harish Rao is scheduled to appear before the Commission on June 9 and KCR on June 11. Rajender, who served as finance minister from June 2014 to December 2018 during the BRS regime, told the commission that although a barrage was initially proposed at Tummidihetti with an estimated cost of `38,000 crore, it was later shifted to Medigadda due to objections raised by the Central Water Commission (CWC) and the Maharashtra government. He explained that Maharashtra had objected to the submergence of a large area, including a wildlife sanctuary, within its territory. The neighbouring state had also insisted on reducing the height of the Tummidihetti barrage from 152 metres to 148 metres. 'Project cost escalated following ryots' additional demands' Rajender said the government had planned to allocate 30 tmcft of water for urban drinking purposes, 15 tmcft for industrial use and another 10 tmcft for rural drinking water needs, in addition to targeting irrigation for 16.5 lakh acres. As the water availability at Tummidihetti was insufficient to meet these requirements, the source was shifted to Medigadda. He further stated that a Cabinet sub-committee — comprising the then Irrigation minister T Harish Rao, R&B minister Thummala Nageswara Rao and himself — was constituted by the then chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao to vet the technical committee's report on the project and present it to the Cabinet.
