‘One of them is…': BJP's Malviya weighs in on KC Venugopal-vs-Air India over ‘close to tragedy' flight scare

Hindustan Times5 days ago
A senior BJP leader on Monday referred to Air India's denial of Congress MP KC Venugopal's claim of a narrow escape from tragedy during a flight, and demanded that he face consequences if his allegation proves false. KC Venugopal had said an Air India flight carrying MPs from Kerala to Delhi just about avoided a tragedy at the Chennai airport upon diversion there.(ANI)
Venugopal had said an Air India flight carrying MPs, including himself, just about avoided a tragedy at the Chennai airport when another aircraft was on the runway. Air India later rejected his interpretation of the events, to which Venugopal said, 'Air India is lying. It was announced by captain only.'
BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya shared Venugopal's original post, detailing the experience onboard, and Air India's response, and wrote, 'One of them is misrepresenting facts.'
He added, "If the allegation is true, Chennai ATC and Air India have much to answer for. If not, Mr Venugopal should face consequences, including being put on a no-fly list for spreading falsehoods."
KC Venugopal said there was 'heart-stopping moment'
KC Venugopal posted on X shortly after 12 am on Monday describing a 'heart-stopping moment' during the first landing attempt at Chennai, when 'another aircraft was reportedly on the same runway".
He was among several MPs and other passengers on the flight AI 2455 from Thiruvananthapuram to Delhi.
He said, 'What began as a delayed departure turned into a harrowing journey. Shortly after take-off, we were hit by unprecedented turbulence. About an hour later, the captain announced a flight signal fault and diverted to Chennai…
'For nearly two hours, we circled the airport awaiting clearance to land, until a heart-stopping moment during our first attempt — another aircraft was reportedly on the same runway. In that split second, the captain's quick decision to pull up saved every life on board. The flight landed safely on the second attempt.'
Venugopal stressed that passenger safety should not rely on luck and called on the Directorate General of Civil Aviation and the Civil Aviation Ministry to urgently investigate, assign accountability, and prevent such incidents in future.
Notably, as chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, Venugopal had recently overseen discussions on aviation safety following the Ahmedabad Air India crash.
On Sunday, Air India responded that flight AI2455 was diverted to Chennai due to a suspected technical issue, not because another aircraft was on the runway.
The aviation regulator DGCA confirmed the flight's diversion was caused by suspected weather radar malfunction, with the plane landing safely.
In a statement, Air India said, 'We would like to clarify that the diversion to Chennai was precautionary due to a suspected technical issue and poor weather conditions.'
'A go-around was instructed by Chennai ATC during the first attempted landing at Chennai airport, not because of the presence of another aircraft on the runway... Our pilots are well-trained to handle such situations, and in this case, they followed standard procedures throughout the flight,' the airline added.
'We understand that such an experience can be unsettling and regret the inconvenience the diversion may have caused to you. However, safety is always our priority.'

Rift between BJP and RSS? Ram Madhav responds to speculation

Bharatiya Janata Party and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh leader Ram Madhav on Saturday dismissed speculation of differences between the Sangh and the party, saying both are part of the 'same ideological family". Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a conversation with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat in Nagpur. (File) "These atkale (speculation) are always put from time to time. If they don't find any issue, then the RSS is brought forward and said that there is friction between the RSS and the BJP. RSS and BJP ek vaicharik parivar ke sambandh mein joode hue two sangathan hai (RSS and BJP are two organisations joined together under the same ideological umbrella)," Ram Madhav, former national general secretary of BJP, told news agency ANI. Madhav stressed that while the BJP works in politics, the RSS operates outside it through social service. 'There is no tension,' he said, adding that people from all political backgrounds, including the Congress, are welcome in the Sangh. Madhav's statement comes after the Congress hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for praising the RSS in his Independence Day 2025 speech, calling it an 'insult to the Constitution". Madhav, however, lauded Modi's address, saying it inspired swayamsevaks and recognised 100 years of the RSS service. "Some people, due to political reasons, have always opposed the RSS, for example, some Congress leaders. They opposed for political reasons, but ultimately everyone knew inside them that the RSS works for the Hindu religion and the country, while being away from politics. The organisation is doing the work of making good people, man-making, that everyone knows. In our lower levels of organisation, everyone from diverse backgrounds gets a chance to work," he said. "When I say that from all political backgrounds get a chance, that means the Congress is also included in it, but some people feel that if they oppose the RSS then they will benefit politically," he added. Earlier, RSS leader Arun Kumar had also said the BJP and Sangh work together 'with mutual trust' and that both organisations continue their independent processes.

Uddhav Sena, MNS will contest Mumbai municipal polls together, says Sanjay Raut

Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) leader Sanjay Raut on Friday said that his party and Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena will contest the upcoming municipal elections in the state, including the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation polls, in alliance, reported The Indian Express. In addition to Mumbai, talks were underway to contest the municipal polls together in Thane, Nashik, Kalyan Dombivali and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, said Raut, adding that 'no one can break the unity of the Thackerays'. The civic body elections in Mumbai are expected to take place later this year, while the Assembly elections are scheduled in 2029. 'The Thackeray brothers will contest the civic polls together and they will win,' the Uddhav Sena leader was quoted as saying by The Indian Express. He added: 'For Maharashtra and Marathi unity, the brothers have unsheathed the sword. Our discussions with MNS are still ongoing, but the goal is clear – to ensure victory in every civic body where we contest together.' The Uddhav Sena and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena had earlier announced that they would contest the BEST Employees Co-operative Credit Society elections in Mumbai together. In the August 18 polls, the Uddhav Sena-affiliated BEST Kamgar Sena and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena-affiliated BEST Kamgar Sena will jointly fight against the BJP-backed panel led by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's aides Prasad Lad and Pravin Darekar, reported The Indian Express. In 2005, Raj Thackeray quit the undivided Shiv Sena and formed the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena a year later. The Shiv Sena and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena were political rivals for the past two decades. However, on July 5, Uddhav Thackeray held a rally with his cousin Raj Thackeray, during which he said that they had ' come together to stay together'. 'We have united to protect Marathi,' Uddhav Thackeray had told supporters of his Shiv Sena faction and those of Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena at a joint rally in Mumbai. 'I want to tell you all that us coming together is just a trailer. This is just the beginning.' Uddhav Thackeray expressed confidence that he, along with his cousin, would win the civic body elections in Mumbai and other cities of Maharashtra.

Nagaland Governor La Ganesan to be cremated in Chennai today

Chennai: The mortal remains of Nagaland Governor La. Ganesan, who passed away on Independence Day, will be cremated in Chennai on Saturday. His body, kept at his residence in T. Nagar for the public to pay homage, will be laid to rest this afternoon with full respect. Ganesan, 80, died at 6.23 p.m. on Friday while undergoing treatment in a Chennai hospital. A veteran leader with a long association with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he was known for his accessibility to journalists and his willingness to provide clear on-record statements throughout his career. Born on February 16, 1945, in Thanjavur, Ganesan hailed from an orthodox Brahmin family with deep RSS roots. He lost his father at the age of nine and began his career as a Revenue Settlement Inspector in government service. Deeply committed to the nationalist movement, he resigned after nine years to become an RSS pracharak. During the Emergency in 1975, he played a crucial role as chief organiser of the RSS in Tamil Nadu, leading efforts to restore democracy. He was also active in addressing sensitive issues such as religious conversions in Meenakshipuram, communal unrest in Mandaikkadu, and caste-related tensions in Ramanathapuram and Puliangudi. In 1991, he joined the BJP to strengthen its base in Tamil Nadu. Rising steadily through the ranks, he served as organising secretary, national secretary, all-India vice-president, and state president. He represented Madhya Pradesh in the Rajya Sabha and was part of the BJP National Executive. A multifaceted personality, he edited the party's Tamil mouthpiece Ore Naadu and launched Pottramarai, a magazine to recognise Tamil scholars, writers, musicians, and artists. Fluent in multiple languages, he was known for his oratory and his ability to compose patriotic and national-integration-themed lyrics. In August 2021, he was appointed Governor of Manipur, later holding additional charge of West Bengal before being posted to Nagaland in February 2023. Condolences poured in from across the political spectrum. President Droupadi Murmu said Ganesan worked for the welfare of the people, and his contribution to Tamil Nadu and the country would be remembered. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was pained by the passing of a devout nationalist who dedicated his life to service and expanding the BJP in Tamil Nadu, while also being deeply passionate about Tamil culture. Governor RN Ravi recalled Ganesan's lifelong selfless service with humility, and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, who paid homage in person, said he was known for his simplicity, calm nature, and ability to build friendships across political lines. AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami described him as an affable leader, while senior BJP leader and former Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan said his passing on Independence Day was poignant, reflecting his deep patriotism and contributions to Tamil literature. BJP state president Nainar Nagendran and former state chief K. Annamalai expressed sorrow, with Annamalai calling him a "simple and profound thinker". V.K. Sasikala, close aide of the late Jayalalithaa, remembered Ganesan's cordial ties with the AIADMK leadership, while AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran praised him as a dignified leader and conveyed condolences to his family. Ganesan's demise marks the end of a long and eventful public life rooted in nationalism, politics, and literature. Leaders and people alike remembered him as a bridge-builder, scholar, and statesman whose contributions will endure.
