The Spanish speedster, originally from San Javier, had been leading the world championship going into round three at the Magny-Cours circuit in France.
It had followed a runner-up result in the season-opener at Estoril and a winner's result at Jerez in the last race at the start of June.
However, during Free Practice, he was involved in a fatal collision.
It is reported Gomez had gone off track alone, but was then hit by the bike of another oncoming rider.
A statement from his team, Team Honda Laglisse, confirmed the heartbreaking news.
It said: "With all the pain in our hearts, we regret to announce that Borja Gomez has passed away at the Magny-Cours circuit after a serious accident in the first Free Practice of the European Stock Championship.
"Beyond his exceptional talent as a pilot, we will remember Borja as the great person he was.
"His kindness and smile will last forever. We will always carry him in our hearts.
"On behalf of the whole Team Laglisse, we want to pass on our condolences to all his family and friends in these hard times that they are going through.
"We love you, Borja. Rest in peace."
Gomez had been a rider in Moto2, and dreamed of returning there one day.
He began his career racing in Supermoto in Spain before racing in the 2019 Kawasaki Cup.
Gomez then moved on to Superbikes, finishing second in the 2021 season of the Spanish Superbike Championship.
A year later, he was once again runner-up for the Cardoso Team.
In 2023 he joined Moto2 to compete with Fantic Racing, completing 13 Grand Prix before he had found his way to the FIM Stock European Championship.
Former motorcyclist Ivan Moreno paid tribute online, saying: "We are not aware of what motorcycling riders risk day after day.
"Just as it gives you glory, sometimes it takes away all your desire for everything. Today is a day of absolute sadness.
"My deepest condolences to all of Borja Gómez's family and friends. RIP."
Former Moto2 champion and MotoGP rider Tito Rabat said: "Although we think everything will turn out fine, we often forget how unfair and delicate life can be. Goodbye, little friend, rest in peace."
Cadiz football club said: "The #CádizCF mourns the passing of the young Spanish driver, 20-year-old Borja Gómez, who lost his life today during training in France at the European Stock Championship."
MotoGP journalist Simon Patterson said: "Tragic news: 20-year-old ESBK championship leader and former Moto2 racer Borja Gomez has been killed in a training crash at Magny-Cours.
"Deepest condolences to his family, friends, team and fans."

World number one Jannik Sinner's serene progress continues at Wimbledon
Pedro Martinez was his latest victim, the Spanish world number 52 – who was carrying a shoulder injury – winning just five games in a 6-1 6-3 6-1 defeat on Centre Court. While 19 seeds perished over the opening two rounds in the men's draw, Sinner has looked unsinkable. Smooooth from Sinner 😮💨 He strolls past Martinez in straight sets to advance…@wimbledon | #wimbledon — ATP Tour (@atptour) July 5, 2025 In reaching the fourth round, the 23-year-old Italian has dropped only 17 games from his three matches. Even when Bjorn Borg won the title without dropping a set in 1976 he had conceded 27 games over the first three rounds, while Roger Federer – the only other man to achieve the feat, in 2017 – had lost 28. The world number one is yet to have his serve broken and has faced just eight break points, four of which were repelled against Martinez. He has spent only five hours and 23 minutes on court so far, which is six minutes less than his French Open final defeat by Carlos Alcaraz last month. 'Every time you enter a grand slam in the second week it's special, and even more special at Wimbledon,' he said. 'We will try to keep pushing – but the first week could not have gone better.'

Tearful Emma Raducanu reveals showdown talks with coach Mark Petchey after Wimbledon exit
FIGHTING back the tears, Emma Raducanu said she will hold showdown talks with coach Mark Petchey about their future working arrangement. But she claims she will head next month to New York – the scene of her greatest triumph – brimming with confidence she CAN match the world's best. 3 Emma Raducanu was knocked out of Wimbledon on Friday night Credit: Shutterstock Editorial 3 Raducanu was respectably beaten by world No1 Aryna Sabalenka Credit: Reuters Raducanu, 22, ate a KitKat chocolate bar in the locker room after her two-hour two-set slugfest with world No1 Aryna Sabalenka on Friday night. For those who had doubted whether the Brit would ever replicate the magical form she showed when lifting the US Open four years ago, this was a demonstration of her abilities. Though she fell short, and was unable to capitalise on two clutch moments in set two, she earned widespread respect for slugging it out with the three-time Grand Slam champion on Centre Court. Petchey, who joined her team on a part-time basis in March, has had a transformative impact on her form and demeanour but there is no guarantee that coaching gig will continue. Raducanu said: 'It's very difficult. He obviously also has his commentating commitments. 'He agreed to help me until the end of Wimbledon and then we kind of see from there. 'Because he gave up some work to work with me here, which I really appreciate and I'm grateful for. Clutching a tissue and sniffling constantly, Raducanu had slightly red eyes when she addressed the world's media following her exit. Cam Norrie bats away awkward question about Emma Raducanu's love life It has been an emotional summer for the Kent-based superstar, one in which she has faced security concerns and received 'some pretty bad news' during her run in Eastbourne. But as self-critical as she is about her own displays, she is proud of how she competed toe-for-toe with Sabalenka, 27, especially in a 74-minute opening set under a closed roof. And that only bodes well for the hard-court swing in North America. 'IT GIVES ME CONFIDENCE' Raducanu – who will play the Mubadala Citi DC Open in Washington later this month – said: 'It's hard to take a loss like that. 'It does give me confidence because I think the problem before was that I felt like I was gulfs away from the very top. 'Having a match like that where I had chances in both sets, it does give me confidence. At the same time, it's very difficult to take right now. 'It gives me confidence that I'm not as far away as I perhaps thought before the tournament. 'Before when I was playing those top-five players, it was pretty convincing, the loss. 'IT'S A BIT OF A LEVELLER' 'I feel like grass for me is a great surface. It's a bit of a leveller in that sense. 'Taking it onto a different surface where it's a lot more lively in America is another challenge in itself. 'There's still a lot of things that I want to do better, a lot of things I want to improve to solidify my game, so that in the big moments I can back myself a little bit more. 'I don't think I've really had a loss like this in a long time, where I feel like I maybe had chances and didn't take them. Usually I'm pretty good at converting. 'In the big moments, Aryna was able to convert. She was able to hit some incredible shots. 'I just need to keep working and get back to the drawing board and improve a lot more.' 3

Lewis Hamilton's brother posted a heart-warming snap on Instagram of the pair embracing in the Ferrari garage amid the final practice session at Silverstone on Friday. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 6 Lewis Hamilton's brother Nicolas was spotted supporting his older brother at Silverstone 6 It was the first time Nicolas watched his brother achieve his best practice session of the season Nicolas captioned the picture: 'So good to be back, supporting big bro! First time for me with Scuderiaferrari, where I have been made to feel so welcome.' The Hamiltons have motor racing in their DNA, with Nicolas currently competing in the British Touring Car Championship for Powder Monkey Brewing Co with Esidock. Nicolas, 33, races with a specially-modified car due to his cerebral palsy. Nicolas is a huge inspiration to fans across the globe, becoming the first ever disabled driver to compete in BTCC against able-bodied drivers. Born two months prematurely, Nicolas spent the first six weeks of his life in intensive care and was diagnosed with spastic diplegia - a form of cerebral palsy - at 18 months old, with doctors predicting he would never be able to walk or run. The two brothers have a close bond and Lewis went incognito to watch Nicolas race at Donnington Park in April 2023. The seven-time world champion, who is going for a record-extending 10 Silverstone wins on Sunday, watched a best-ever finish of sixth for Nicolas. Lewis Hamilton gives lucky F1 rival a lift home on his private jet 'A lot of the criticism is unjust – I don't deserve it. But to finally shut the critics up on 23 April was the best thing I could ever wish for. It was a load of relief and a lot of weight off my shoulders.' Nicolas had competed full-time in the British Touring Car Championship since 2019 but stopped racing part way through the 2023 season. With the new BTCC campaign beginning in April, it was thought that Nicolas' 20-month sabbatical would be extended. But in March it was announced that he would be making a shock return after nearly two years out driving a modified Cupra Leon for Un-Limited Motorsports this year. Meanwhile, on Saturday Hamilton dropped from P2 in the third qualifying session to qualify fifth for the British Grand Prix on Sunday. 6 Watching Lewis race as a youngster inspired Nicolas to get into motorsport The 40-year-old went too wide in the final sector, with old team-mate George Russell beating his time, as provisional pole-sitter Oscar Piastri bobbled wide too. But a stunning error-free lap from Max Verstappen secured pole position for the Red Bull star, with Piastri and Lando Norris making up the front row. Elsewhere, Hamilton's beloved French bulldog Roscoe was spotted returning to the Silverstone paddock this week. The Brit previously told SunSport that "his heart stops" every time he gets a text about Roscoe, with the 12-year-old dog recently recovering from pneumonia. 6 Lewis Hamilton's beloved French bulldog, Roscoe, was spotted at Silverstone this weekend British Grand Prix qualifying: Top 10 1) Max Vertsappen (Red Bull) 2) Oscar Piastri (McLaren) 3) Lando Norris (McLaren) 4) George Russell (Mercedes) 5) Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari) 6) Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) 7) Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes)* 8) Oliver Bearman (Haas)** 9) Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) 10) Pierre Gasly (Alpine) Three-place grid penalty ** 10-place grid penalty
