Injured woman dies in ambulance after spending hours stuck in traffic on Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway
Palghar: A 49-year-old woman's visit to her former school ended in a tragedy after she suffered severe injuries in a tree fall incident there and died on the way to hospital as the ambulance ferrying her got stuck in a traffic jam for several hours on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway (NH-48) in Palghar district recently. "She could have been saved if the ambulance had managed to reach hospital 30 minutes earlier," her husband said, narrating the journey through the heavy traffic and pothole-ridden road on July 31. Palghar MP Hemant Savara demanded compensation for families of people who died in accidents on the highway or in ambulances stuck in traffic. He asked for a technical audit of the highway, saying it had started deteriorating in its very first monsoon despite an elaborate, Rs 600 crore white-topping exercise. He blamed substandard material and said he had given a letter stating his demands to Union minister for highways Nitin Gadkari during the monsoon session at the end of July. The victim, Chhaaya Purav, had gone to the school in Saphala for a function and was watching a large tree being chopped on the premises. "She was at a distance and watching like others present there, but in a cruel twist of fate, the huge tree unexpectedly fell on her, inflicting severe head and rib injuries to her," a resident, Arun Patil, said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like TV providers are furious: this gadget gives you access to all channels Techno Mag Learn More Undo She was taken to a local hospital, but due to her critical condition she was later referred to Hinduja hospital in Mumbai, about 100 km away. Her husband, Kaushik, accompanied her in the ambulance, which departed around 3 pm. An anaesthetic was administered to the victim to manage her pain. The ambulance got stuck in the traffic jam on NH-48, said her family. By 6 pm, the vehicle had barely reached the halfway point. As the effect of the anaesthetic wore off, Purav's suffering intensified. "I watched her endure unbearable agony for four hours," her husband said, describing how the gridlock and pothole-ridden road exacerbated her pain. "She kept pleading for help, but we were trapped as vehicles driving against the traffic made matters worse," he said. In a desperate attempt to save her, the ambulance driver diverted the vehicle to Orbit Hospital in Mira Road. Purav was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital, said Kaushik. Residents of the area in Mumbai where Purav resided mourned her death, with large hoardings put up to pay homage to her. In his letter to Union minister Gadkari, MP Savara said the NH48 Ghodbunder-Talasari stretch, which is in his constituency, has developed large potholes making it extremely dangerous and uncomfortable for the motorists. "I have also demanded compensation for the people who have died on this highway during the white topping construction activity. People have died on this NH-48 due to potholes or while their ambulance got stuck in traffic for hours or due to the poor management of the contractor doing this white topping activity," he said. The white-topping activity on NH-48 commenced in Dec 2023 with a budget of around Rs 600 crore and was planned to ease travel as the national highway sees some of the heaviest intra-state traffic in the country. "Ever since the work commenced, motorists have faced traffic congestion for hours, fatal accidents and lack of empathy from the govt and NHAI and the contractor," said Harban Singh Nanade, a highway transport activist. Nanade said that even on Raksha Bandhan, the Ghodbunder Road repairs continued, and it took families five to six hours to travel a distance of eight to nine kilometres. CMCH surgeons perform rare limb salvage surgery
COIMBATORE: The orthopaedics department at Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) performed a complex limb salvage surgery on the shoulder bone of a 57-year-old man. M Eswaran of Moongiltholuvu village near Udumalaipettai in Tirupur district was admitted to CMCH in July with a swollen left shoulder, which was diagnosed as squamous cell carcinoma that had metastasized from oesophageal cancer. Dr S Vetrivel Chezian, director of the Institute of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, said metastasis is common in the knee bone and the joints of the lower limbs, such as the thighs. He added that the typically diagnosed age group is young adults around thirty. He said, "The foremost factor is its rare occurrence in the upper part of the body, followed by age. Usually, when tumours are encountered at the secondary stage, that particular portion gets paralysed. But Eswaran's arm movements were intact. That's why we decided to save the bone and do a custom-made prosthesis on the left shoulder. Almost 15 cm of the prosthesis was inserted, retaining the patient's elbow bone and the rest of the limb bone. ' The surgery was multidisciplinary. 'This is the first such case in CMCH so far. The entire procedure was accomplished under the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like They Were So Beautiful Before; Now Look At Them; Number 10 Will Shock You Reportingly Undo If this had been performed at any private facility, it would cost at least Rs 3 lakh,' he said. Eswaran, daily wage earner, underwent the surgery on July 23 and is currently under observation, with plans to be discharged in a couple of days. The doctor said the patient would continue treatment for his oesophageal cancer. Although there may be limitations in his limb movements, a recovery time of six to twelve weeks is suggested to regain shoulder movements. Last Updated: The Karnataka Health Dept banned leave for staff from August 12-14 due to an ASHA workers' strike demanding a promised Rs 10,000 monthly honorarium. The Karnataka Health Department has issued a directive prohibiting all officers and staff from taking leave for three days staring Tuesday. The directive mentioned that leave can be taken in cases of medical emergencies. The notice was issued in response to a planned three-day strike by ASHA workers beginning tomorrow. The strike, announced by ASHA workers across the state, is scheduled to be held from August 12 to 14. The workers are demanding the fixed monthly honorarium of Rs 10,000 that was promised by the state government in January but is yet to be implemented. In a circular, the department stated that daily attendance reports of ASHA workers would be collected from primary health centres, compiled at the district level, and submitted to the commissionerate by 3pm each day of the protest. The notice stated, 'Information about ASHA workers absent from duty within district limits will be collected daily from primary health centres, compiled at the district level, and submitted to the commissionerate by 3 pm during the protest." The department has also called on community health officers, primary health protection officers, health inspectors, and Anganwadi workers to ensure uninterrupted public health services during the agitation. ASHA workers went on an indefinite strike in January over their several demands, including that of monthly honorarium. Their strike prompted Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to announce the monthly honorarium of Rs 10,000 four days later. The honorarium was supposed to be effective from April but it is yet to implemented. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
