Victoria's Secret U.S. website is down as lingerie seller addresses 'security incident'

CNBC5 days ago

Victoria's Secret has taken down its U.S. website and says some in-store services will be unavailable as it addresses an unspecified "security incident."
A message to customers remained in place of the popular lingerie brand's normal shopping site Thursday, stating that the company had halted these services "as a precaution."
"Our team is working around the clock to fully restore operations," the message read.
Victoria's Secret did not immediately provide more details about the "security incident," or specify whether it was a cyber attack. The Associated Press reached out to the Ohio company for further information on Thursday.
It also wasn't immediately clear when Victoria's Secret identified the issue and began halting some of its operations. Most media reports of Victoria's Secret website going dark emerged Wednesday — when the company also shared an update on social media — but some frustrated customers online said they began experiencing issues earlier in the week.
A customer FAQ updated Wednesday night on Victoria's Secret corporate site noted that it did not have an exact timing regarding the return of its website — and that customer care services were also unavailable.
The company said that it is trying to fulfill orders placed before Monday and that it would be extending return windows and some direct mail coupon offers for impacted customers in the U.S.
Victoria's Secret said its stores, as well as its PINK brand locations, remain open for customers. But some in-store services, such as returning online orders in person, are unavailable per its customer FAQ.
It was not immediately clear if any in-store services in Victoria's Secret locations outside the U.S. were also impacted. But the company's U.K. site appeared uninterrupted Thursday.

Shares of Victoria's Secret & Co. dropped 6.8 percent to $21 on Wednesday as investors took notice of the barely there website. Instead of the usual models in lingerie, the site had a plain box with an alert to customers. 'We identified and are taking steps to address a security incident,' the notice to shoppers said. 'We have taken down our web site and some in store services as a precaution. Our team is working around the clock to fully restore operations. We appreciate your patience during this process. In the meantime, our Victoria's Secret and Pink stores remain open and we look forward to serving you.' A Victoria's Secret spokeswoman added that the company 'immediately enacted our response protocols, third-party experts are engaged, and we took down our website and some in-store services as a precaution.' After a rocky few years, Victoria's Secret is reorganizing under chief executive officer Hillary Super, the former Savage X Fenty executive who took the helm last year. Even without e-com outages, Super has her hands full. In April, the company reorganized its executive leadership structure — again — installing brand presidents to oversee Victoria's Secret, Pink and the beauty business. 'We are working from a position of strength, and I believe evolving our organization to further differentiate our iconic brands and deepen our emotional connection to our customers will supercharge our growth,' Super told WWD in a statement at the time. Now the brand needs to get back online to reach that growth potential. Disney laying off several hundred employees worldwide

The Walt Disney Co. is laying off several hundred employees worldwide as the entertainment giant looks to trim some costs and adapt to evolving industry conditions. A Disney spokesperson confirmed the action on Tuesday. The exact number of jobs being cut is unknown, but layoffs will occur across several divisions, including television and film marketing, TV publicity, casting and development, and corporate financial operations. No entire teams will be eliminated. 'As our industry transforms at a rapid pace, we continue to evaluate ways to efficiently manage our businesses while fueling the state-of-the-art creativity and innovation that consumers value and expect from Disney,' the spokesperson said. 'As part of this ongoing work, we have identified opportunities to operate more efficiently and are eliminating a limited number of positions.' Last month Disney posted solid profits and revenue in the second quarter as its domestic theme parks thrived and the company added well over a million subscribers to its streaming service. The company also boosted its profit expectations for the year. Disney's also been riding a wave of box office hits, including 'Thunderbolts(asterisk)' and 'Lilo & Stitch," which is now the second-highest grossing movie of the year with $280.1 million in domestic ticket sales. In 2023 Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that Disney would cut about 7,000 jobs as part of an ambitious companywide cost-savings plan and 'strategic reorganization.' Disney said at the time that the job reductions were part of a targeted $5.5 billion cost savings across the company. Shares of Disney, which is based in Burbank, California, rose slightly in midday trading. Michelle Chapman, The Associated Press

Victoria's Secret Reveals Preliminary Q1 Results, but Delays Full Report Following ‘Security Incident'

Victoria's Secret & Co. got its websites back up and running, but needs to huddle with tech support some more before reporting its official first-quarter results. The lingerie giant's websites went dark for three days last week as it wrestled with a 'security incident involving information technology systems.' More from WWD Victoria's Secret Goes Dark and Stays Dark in Security Incident Together Group Acquires 'Experiential' Agency Obo Victoria's Secret Adopts Poison Pill to Keep Brett Blundy's BBRC at Bay Victoria's Secret detected the problem on May 24 and said it 'immediately enacted its response protocols to attempt to contain and eradicate unauthorized network access, and third-party experts were engaged.' Its corporate systems, including some functions in stores and e-commerce sites, were shut down on May 26. The e-commerce sites were back up on May 29, but the company is still working to restore full access to the corporate system. The incident did not materially disrupt operations, according to the company. While the tech trip up happened during the second quarter, Victoria's Secret postponed its first-quarter financial update, which was scheduled for Thursday. 'The restoration process has prevented employees from accessing certain systems and information needed to support the company's release of its financial results for the first quarter,' the firm said. Earnings will be released at a later time, but the company gave investors a preview with preliminary results that were near or above the high-end of its previous guidance. First-quarter sales came in at $1.35 billion, down from $1.36 billion a year ago, but ahead of the $1.3 billion to $1.33 billion the company forecast. Adjusted operating income totaled $32 million, down from $40 million a year earlier, but ahead of the $10 million to $30 million forecast. The question now is how much the incident will weigh on the second quarter. 'The company continues to assess the full scope and impact of the incident, under the oversight of the audit committee of the board of directors,' Victoria's Secret said. 'Although this incident has not caused a material disruption to its operations to date, the company has incurred — and may continue to incur — expenses and other financial impacts related to this incident, which could negatively impact its future financial results, including for the second quarter.' It's been a complicated stretch for the Victoria's Secret board, which, in the midst of the website outage last week, also imposed a poison pill shareholder rights plan to prevent Australian entrepreneur Brett Blundy's BBRC International from buying the company without paying a control premium. BBRC has a 13 percent stake in Victoria's Secret.
