Hong Kong stocks open flat following Xi-Trump talks

Hong Kong and mainland stock markets opened flat on Friday, as a call between Beijing and Washington offered little clarity to ease ongoing trade tensions.
The SAR's benchmark Hang Seng Index rose 34.6 points, or 0.14 percent, to open at 23,941, while the blue-chip CSI300 Index on the mainland edged down 0.1 percent.
President Xi Jinping and his US counterpart Donald Trump confronted weeks of brewing trade tensions and a battle over critical minerals in a leader-to-leader call on Thursday, leaving key issues unresolved for future talks.
"Market reaction is low key as the discussion between the two leaders lacked real details outside of agreeing to new rounds of tariff talks," UBS analysts said in a note.
"With no clear signs the call will cool trade tensions, headline risk remains top of mind amid the ongoing tariff rifts."
Chinese tech ADRs were muted after the call, up only 0.85 percent overnight in New York session. (Reuters/Xinhua)

A top Taliban official said on Saturday that all Afghans who fled the country after the collapse of the former Western-backed government are free to return home, promising they would not be harmed if they come back. Taliban Prime Minister Mohammad Hassan Akhund made the amnesty offer in his message for the Islamic holiday of Eid al-Adha, also known as the 'Feast of Sacrifice.' The offer comes days after US President Donald Trump announced a sweeping travel ban on 12 countries, including Afghanistan. The measure largely bars Afghans hoping to resettle in the United States permanently as well as those hoping to go to the US temporarily, such as for university study. Trump also suspended a core refugee program in January, all but ending support for Afghans who had allied with the US and leaving tens of thousands of them stranded. Afghans in neighbouring Pakistan who are awaiting resettlement are also dealing with a deportation drive by the Islamabad government to get them out of the country. Almost a million have left Pakistan since October 2023 to avoid arrest and expulsion. 'Afghans who have left the country should return to their homeland,' he said. 'Nobody will harm them.'

LGBTQ+ people from around the world will march through the streets of Washington on Saturday in a joyful celebration meant to show defiance to President Donald Trump's rollback of queer rights. The parade route will come within one block of the White House grounds in one of the final main events of the weeks-long WorldPride celebration. On Sunday, a more political event, dubbed a rally and march, will convene at the Lincoln Memorial, a revered space in the US civil rights movement as the site of Martin Luther King Jr.'s 'I Have a Dream' speech in 1963. Events will play out in the US capital in the wake of the Trump administration's measures to curtail LGBTQ+ rights. The Republican president has issued executive orders limiting transgender rights, banning transgender people from serving in the armed forces, and rescinding anti-discrimination policies for LGBTQ+ people as part of a campaign to repeal diversity, equity and inclusion programmes. While proponents of DEI consider it necessary to correct historic inequities, the White House has described it as a form of discrimination based on race or gender and said its transgender policy protects women by keeping transgender women out of shared spaces. Moreover, the White House said it has appointed a number of openly gay people to cabinet posts or judgeships, and noted that the Trump administration took steps to decriminalise homosexuality globally, and that its 2019 initiative 'Ending the HIV Epidemic' aimed to cut HIV infections by 90 per cent by 2030.

The barrage — the latest in near daily attacks — included aerial glide bombs. The intensity of the Russian attacks on Ukraine over the past weeks has further dampened hopes the two sides could reach a peace deal anytime soon — especially after Kyiv launched a surprise drone attack on military airfields deep inside Russia.
