Vijay shared that his team encouraged the addition of a tag during the promotions of Liger, especially as other stars had their own titles.
Vijay Deverakonda has always stood out in the film industry for doing things his way whether it's choosing unconventional roles or being unapologetically himself. But one move that unexpectedly invited major backlash was his brief decision to add 'The' before his name. In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, the Liger actor opened up about the controversy, the thought behind the tag, and why he ultimately dropped it.
'That was one whole situation in itself," Vijay said, referring to the public reaction over 'The Vijay Deverakonda' branding.
He explained, 'There was a crazy amount of backlash because 'The' was added to my name. Interestingly, no other person ever got backlash for something like that. You can have any name—from Universal Star to People's Star—and people younger than me, older than me, those who debuted before me, everyone has a tagline. I was probably the only one without one. Nobody else gets backlash."
The actor shared that his team encouraged the addition of a tag during the promotions of Liger, especially as other stars had their own titles. 'I resisted for a long time because I didn't want the tag. I just wanted to be known by my name. But in articles, the press would call me Southern Sensation, Rowdy Star and many other different variants," he said.
He further explained his discomfort with being called 'Southern Sensation,' calling it 'limiting." As a compromise, he had suggested adding a simple 'The' to his name—something minimal, yet distinct. But even that drew criticism.
Eventually, Vijay decided to do away with all titles. 'I told my team to just refer to me as Vijay Deverakonda. That's how I want to be known—nothing more, nothing less."
Meanwhile, Vijay is now looking forward to the release of his upcoming spy thriller Kingdom, directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri. The film is slated to release in theatres on July 31. The recently released promo has already created buzz online, with fans calling it a much-needed comeback for the actor.

Soha Ali Khan Backs Deepika Padukone's 8-Hour Shift Demand: ‘If You Don't Pack Up, I'll Run Off'

Last Updated: Soha Ali Khan supports Deepika Padukone's call for an 8-hour workday, sharing how motherhood changed her priorities and she'd leave sets if shoots extended beyond 7 p.m. Ever since Deepika Padukone exited Sandeep Reddy Vanga's Spirit over the fixed work hours rift, a debate has been raging over whether actors should demand regulated schedules. While many believe it's a personal choice, Soha Ali Khan has backed Padukone, stating that she understands her and completely agrees with the idea. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Soha said, 'I lost my entire identity in motherhood. I lost my friends, and I temporarily lost my husband. I forgot everything." She further added that she chose to become a mother at 38, and 'for the first three years, it was all about her, to the extent that I had to find balance again." Recalling her early motherhood phase, she shared how she would get really anxious if the shoot didn't wrap up by 7 p.m. 'By 7 p.m. I start getting anxious because it's my bedtime ritual with her… I burst into tears once because we were in Rajasthan, shooting, and I hadn't seen her all day," Soha shared. She further added that she would run off if the director didn't pack up, stating, 'I totally understand where Deepika is coming from. At 7, if you don't pack up with me, I'll run off… That was a career hit I was ready to take at 38, after achieving a lot." For the unversed, the work-life balance in Bollywood started after Sandeep Reddy Vanga removed Deepika Padukone from Prabhas's starrer Spirit earlier this year. Reports suggest that her demands, including eight-hour workdays, a high salary, and a share in the film's profits, did not sit well with director Vanga. Deepika, a new mother, is reportedly seeking to balance her work and personal life by reducing her working hours. Several celebrities, including Vikrant Massey, Rashmika Mandanna and Anurag Basu, have come out in support of Deepika amid the ongoing discussion. 'Today, the whole country is debating about flexible hours, but that is for discussion amongst the teams and figuring out what works for them. It's their personal choices," Rashmika said recently during an interview with Mojo Story. On the work front, Deepika Padukone is all set to collaborate with Atlee once again after the blockbuster hit Jawan. She is reportedly going to play a pivotal role in Shah Rukh Khan's King.
