Anwar calls for immediate probe into assault on Rafizi's son
The Prime Minister said he had conveyed this to Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.
"We have yet to recover from the scourge of bullying in schools and now we are confronted with another deplorable act – a malicious and treacherous assault on the son of Rafizi Ramli," he said in a Facebook post on Wednesday (Aug 13).
He also prayed for the well-being of Rafizi and his family.
Earlier, Rafizi said that his son and wife were getting into their car to leave a shopping mall in Putrajaya at about 1.45pm on Wednesday when a man grabbed the boy and pricked him with a syringe.
He said the assault involved two men in black and wearing helmets who were on a motorcycle.
Rafizi's son was taken immediately taken to a hospital after the attack.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said he would pray for the speedy recovery of Rafizi's son.
In a post on X, Fahmi, who is also PKR information chief, expressed sadness, shock and anger over the attack.
"As a father with children around the same age, I am also deeply concerned about my family's safety, he said.
Deputy Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister and PKR secretary-general Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh said in a statement that the party strongly condemns the assault.
"Children must never be made victims under any circumstances. Such actions are cruel, inhumane and must be strongly condemned by all," said Fuziah.
Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang, who is also PKR vice-president, in a Facebook post urged the police to act swiftly to identify the perpetrators and masterminds and bring them to justice.
"This serious crime was clearly premeditated and targeted," he said.
He said harassing or attacking the family of a politician is a cowardly act.
Chang urged politicians from all parties to show solidarity and stand with Rafizi and his family to oppose such abhorrent behaviour. – Bernama

Two Chinese nationals charged with flying drone over restricted area
KUALA LUMPUR: Two Chinese nationals have claimed trial to charges of espionage and documentation in a restricted area after they were nabbed by the police for flying a drone in Wisma Pertahanan on Aug 6, Sinar Harian reports. Both suspects pleaded not guilty after they were charged under Section 3(a) and Section 4 of the Official Secrets Act before Sessions Court Judge Izralizam Sanusi on Wednesday (Aug 13). Judge Izralizam denied the duo bail and set Sept 11 for the appointment of legal counsel and the submission of documents, the Malay language daily reported. Earlier, the police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) had reported, in a Facebook post, that the two Chinese nationals were detained for trespassing in the restricted area of Wisma Pertahanan, Jalan Padang Tembak, on Aug 6. The CID said that the two suspects were detected by Military Police (MP) personnel conducting patrols in the area. According to the statement, investigations found that the suspects were flying a drone in the football field near Wisma Pertahanan before they were apprehended. "Police seized various equipment, including drones and several memory cards, and a search of their hotel room uncovered more drone equipment," the statement said. It added that interrogation of the suspects revealed that the drone recordings were made on the instruction of their employer, but they were unaware of the purpose and objective of the surveillance. "Police are also in contact with several international and local agencies to determine the background and travel records of both individuals," it added.

Govt, opposition close ranks over assault on Rafizi's son
KUALA LUMPUR: Members of parliament from both sides of the divide today expressed solidarity in condemning the attack on the son of former economy minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli at a shopping mall in Putrajaya yesterday. Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun (PH–Port Dickson), speaking at a press conference in Parliament, described the incident as an act of violence that went beyond the bounds of humanity. The Negri Sembilan menteri besar said that, in a democratic country, differences of opinion should never be resolved through threats or violence, especially when children are involved. "We fully support Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's statement that the law must be upheld without compromise. "No one should escape firm action if proven to be involved," he said. Present were other government MPs, including Subang MP Wong Chen, P. Prabakaran (Batu), Tan Kar Hing (Gopeng), Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh (Ledang), Dr Taufiq Johari (Sungai Petani), Datuk Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik (Balik Pulau) and Hassan Abdul Karim (Pasir Gudang). At the same time, the opposition bloc, in a separate press conference, also condemned the attack. Opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin (PN–Larut) said the opposition also stood behind Rafizi and his family. "I wish to make it clear that opposition MPs will stand together on this matter to ensure not only that Rafizi, but also his family, are safe and that such incidents do not recur," he said. Among opposition MPs present were Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin (Masjid Tanah), Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan (Kota Bharu), Datuk Seri Saifuddin Abdullah (Indera Mahkota), Datuk Seri Dr Ronald Kiandee (Beluran) and Wan Ahmad Fayshal Wan Ahmad Kamal (Machang). Yesterday, Rafizi confirmed that his son was attacked and injected with a syringe at a shopping mall in Putrajaya. The Pandan MP added that checks revealed that two men on a motorcycle had been following his wife's car prior to the attack. Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said authorities are tracking down the two individuals. Shazeli added that actions have been taken, including obtaining and reviewing closed-circuit television footage from the scene. Rafizi today also revealed that his wife received two threatening messages via WhatsApp, the first at 1.12am and the second at 11.02am. He believed that the attack on his son may be linked to a meeting he had last week with a group of whistleblowers regarding a scandal. However, he declined to disclose details of the scandal.

Selangor police: Bukit Aman joins probe into assault on Rafizi's son at Putrajaya mall, suspect still unidentified
PETALING JAYA, Aug 14 — Police said officers from the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigations Department have been roped in to assist in ongoing investigations following an assault against the son of former minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli at a shopping mall in Putrajaya yesterday. Selangor police chief Commissioner Datuk Shazeli Kahar said a thorough investigation on all aspects is underway, including determining the motive of the attack. 'The victim is reportedly in stable condition at present. 'At this moment, the suspect remains unidentified. Any updates will be informed to the public from time to time,' he told a media briefing at the Selangor contingent headquarters here. He also confirmed that a police report was lodged on the attack carried out by an unknown individual against a child at IOI City Mall, Putrajaya yesterday. Asked on why the suspect remained unidentified despite having a closed-circuit surveillance system at the shopping mall, Shazeli said the suspect had concealed their identity by wearing dark clothings and a helmet. Rafizi yesterday confirmed in a statement that at the time of the incident, two male suspects dressed in black, wearing helmets and riding a motorcycle had followed his wife's car before one of them pulled his son away and stabbed him with a hypodermic needle. The PKR politician further claimed that a group of whistleblowers had approached him last week with information on a scandal, and alleged that an attack on his son was meant to stop him from pursuing the matter. Shazeli said six witness statements have been recorded so far, including Rafizi himself and his wife, who were present at the time of the incident. Shazeli also said police have yet to receive a report from Rafizi's wife on the alleged threat message sent to her but urged her to do so as soon as possible. Earlier today. Rafizi said that following his son's attack yesterday afternoon, his wife had received threatening messages including a text saying: 'Be quiet, if you continue, AIDS'. The case is being investigated under Section 14(d) of the Sexual Offences against Children Act; and Section 324 and Section 352 of the Penal Code respectively.
