Govt, opposition close ranks over assault on Rafizi's son

KUALA LUMPUR: Members of parliament from both sides of the divide today expressed solidarity in condemning the attack on the son of former economy minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli at a shopping mall in Putrajaya yesterday.
Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun (PH–Port Dickson), speaking at a press conference in Parliament, described the incident as an act of violence that went beyond the bounds of humanity.
The Negri Sembilan menteri besar said that, in a democratic country, differences of opinion should never be resolved through threats or violence, especially when children are involved.
"We fully support Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's statement that the law must be upheld without compromise.
"No one should escape firm action if proven to be involved," he said.
Present were other government MPs, including Subang MP Wong Chen, P. Prabakaran (Batu), Tan Kar Hing (Gopeng), Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh (Ledang), Dr Taufiq Johari (Sungai Petani), Datuk Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik (Balik Pulau) and Hassan Abdul Karim (Pasir Gudang).
At the same time, the opposition bloc, in a separate press conference, also condemned the attack.
Opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin (PN–Larut) said the opposition also stood behind Rafizi and his family.
"I wish to make it clear that opposition MPs will stand together on this matter to ensure not only that Rafizi, but also his family, are safe and that such incidents do not recur," he said.
Among opposition MPs present were Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin (Masjid Tanah), Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan (Kota Bharu), Datuk Seri Saifuddin Abdullah (Indera Mahkota), Datuk Seri Dr Ronald Kiandee (Beluran) and Wan Ahmad Fayshal Wan Ahmad Kamal (Machang).
Yesterday, Rafizi confirmed that his son was attacked and injected with a syringe at a shopping mall in Putrajaya.
The Pandan MP added that checks revealed that two men on a motorcycle had been following his wife's car prior to the attack.
Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said authorities are tracking down the two individuals.
Shazeli added that actions have been taken, including obtaining and reviewing closed-circuit television footage from the scene.
Rafizi today also revealed that his wife received two threatening messages via WhatsApp, the first at 1.12am and the second at 11.02am.
He believed that the attack on his son may be linked to a meeting he had last week with a group of whistleblowers regarding a scandal.
However, he declined to disclose details of the scandal.

Baseless suit against PM

LETTER | We register our strongest objection to the legal action initiated by P Waythamoorthy seeking to disqualify Anwar Ibrahim as Tambun MP and as the prime minister. This reckless litigation is not only legally untenable but also a gross abuse of judicial process. It undermines the Federal Constitution, the royal prerogative of pardon, and the democratic mandate of the people. 1. Royal pardon is final and binding Anwar received a full and unconditional royal pardon in 2018. Constitutionally, such a pardon has the effect of erasing all legal disqualifications. By challenging this, the plaintiff has shown blatant disrespect to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's prerogative powers under Article 42 of the Federal Constitution. 2. No AG's consent This suit purports to question matters of public right without obtaining the fiat (consent) of the attorney-general. Filing such an action without the AG's sanction is procedurally defective and could expose the plaintiff to penal consequences for frivolous and vexatious litigation. 3. Time-barred and incompetent Any challenge to the validity of an MP's election must be filed within 21 days under Article 118 of the Federal Constitution and Section 38 of the Election Offences Act 1954. Waytha's filing, more than two years after the Tambun election, is barred by law and amounts to a deliberate abuse of court process. 4. Lack of locus standi The plaintiff has no standing to maintain this suit. He is neither a voter of Tambun nor a person directly affected. Malaysian jurisprudence, particularly Government of Malaysia v Lim Kit Siang [1988] 2 MLJ 12, makes it clear that public interest litigation without locus standi or AG's fiat is not permitted. 5. Penal consequences for misuse of process Waytha's conduct may warrant sanctions under the law: Order 18 Rule 19 of the Rules of Court 2012 – permits striking out of actions that are scandalous, frivolous, or vexatious, with costs on an indemnity basis. Section 35, Legal Profession Act 1976 – as a lawyer, knowingly filing a baseless action could amount to professional misconduct. Contempt of court – Persisting in actions that scandalise the royal prerogative of pardon or abuse judicial process may amount to contempt, which carries imprisonment or fines. Penal Code, Section 177 – knowingly furnishing false information to a public servant in judicial proceedings may attract criminal liability. Such punitive measures exist to protect the dignity of the courts and to deter individuals from weaponising the judiciary for political theatrics. 6. Insult to democracy and monarchy This suit disrespects the will of the electorate in Tambun, the authority of Parliament, and the solemn decision of His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong in appointing the prime minister. To misuse the courts in this manner is not only irresponsible but borders on an attempt to destabilise the constitutional order. This legal charade must be struck down swiftly. The courts should not only dismiss the action but also consider penal sanctions to send a clear message that our judiciary cannot be misused for baseless political stunts. The Federal Constitution is supreme, not a means for personal ambition nor legal mischief. SELVAM SHANMUGAM is an advocate and solicitor at the High Court of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur. Time for an elite school in Keningau: Ex-Principal

Published on: Sunday, August 17, 2025 Published on: Sun, Aug 17, 2025 Text Size: KENINGAU: It is time to set up an elite school here, said former principal Gundohing Peter Paun. Peter, who was also a senior officer of the Sabah Education Department, said Keningau is the largest town in the interior region and is rapidly developing. 'Therefore, there is a need to build an elite school to accommodate intelligent, bright and selected students in an elite environment. 'With the establishment of this elite school, they will not have to leave Keningau, and all the best students from the interior can be gathered in the district,' he said. Peter, who is also a prospective candidate for KDM in Liawan, made these remarks after participating in a grassroots programme visiting several villages in the Liawan constituency, including the Keningau central market. 'This is what needs to be implemented in the Keningau area, alongside various other development agendas, if given the opportunity to become the representative for Liawan,' he added. Elite schools refer to institutions known for their excellence in academics and extra-curricular activities, often associated with better facilities and more comprehensive programmes. This term can also refer to fully residential schools (SBP) or cluster schools of excellence. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? AMK Sabah hits out at PAS call

Published on: Sunday, August 17, 2025 Published on: Sun, Aug 17, 2025 Text Size: Kota Kinabalu: Angkatan Muda Keadilan (AMK) Sabah condemned the call by Sabah PAS Commissioner Datuk Dr Aliakbar Gulasan to Malaysians to wear black during National Day and Malaysia Day celebrations as a show of solidarity for Zara Qairina. AMK Sabah said Zara's death should be treated as a humanitarian issue requiring empathy and respect, rather than being exploited for political gain through protest symbols that could tarnish the nation's historic celebrations. They said National Day and Malaysia Day are sacred occasions meant to be celebrated with patriotism, gratitude and love for the country, adding that it should unite Malaysians under the national flag, not become platforms for divisive political messaging. While expressing sympathy and solidarity with Zara's family over their heart breaking loss, AMK Sabah acknowledged that Malaysians want full justice in the case. They cautioned the public to carefully verify information before believing or sharing it, particularly on social media, pointing out that spreading unverified facts could cause confusion and hamper investigations. AMK Sabah called on all parties to allow the police to conduct their investigation transparently and within legal parameters, free from unfounded external pressure. They also expressed confidence that the ongoing investigation would deliver fair and appropriate justice for Zara, while urging Malaysians to maintain their patriotic spirit during National Day and Malaysia Day celebrations without sacrificing harmony in the pursuit of justice. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
