Liberia, India vow to create terror-free world as Shinde-led delegation concludes visit

Monrovia, Jun 3 (PTI) An all-party parliamentary delegation from India, led by Shiv Sena MP Shrikant Eknath Shinde, has concluded a successful visit to Liberia, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to work together in fostering a peaceful, secure, and terror-free world.

On Monday, the delegation met with their counterpart parliamentarians in Liberia's Senate and House of Representatives.
'In a gesture of solidarity', Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence, President Pro-Tempore of the Senate, and Richard Nagbe Koon, Speaker of the House of Representatives, led the parliamentarians in observing a moment of silence in memory of the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack, the release said.
'In a moving gesture', Karnga-Lawrence invited Shinde to address the Senate, 'marking the first time an Indian parliamentarian has done so', it said.
Shinde spoke about India's firm stand against cross-border terrorism and underscored the critical need for international solidarity in confronting this global menace.
'I had the honour of addressing the Senate of Liberia, where I unequivocally presented India's firm policy of zero tolerance towards terrorism. During the address, I also highlighted the series of terrorist attacks carried out by Pakistan in India over the past few years,' the Shiv Sena MP said in a post on X Tuesday.
Liberia was among a select group of countries engaged by India's multi-party delegations, highlighting its importance as a democratic partner in West Africa and its principled stand against terrorism.
'The visit sought to strengthen global consensus on the urgent need to isolate and confront terror networks and their sponsors,' the release said.
In its meeting with Liberian President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr, the delegation conveyed appreciation for his statement of condolence and condemnation addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Mori following the in Pahalgam attack.
They also acknowledged Liberia's upcoming tenure as a non-permanent member of UNSC for the term 2026-27 and the important role of Liberia from this high platform in advancing the fight against the menace of terrorism.
The Liberian leadership reiterated its strong support for India's principled response through Operation Sindoor and emphasised the importance of unified international efforts to combat terrorism, the release said.
Sara Beysolow Nyanti, Minister of Foreign Affairs, was also present during the meeting.
The delegation also engaged with local think tanks and media representatives, reaffirming that 'India's battle against terrorism extends beyond its borders — it is a defence of global peace, human dignity, and the safety of all humanity,' the release said.
Besides Shinde, the delegation comprised Bansuri Swaraj (BJP), ET Mohmd Basheer (Indian Union Muslim League), Atul Garg (BJP), Sasmit Patra (BJD), Manan Kumar Mishra (BJP), Surendrajeet Singh Ahluwalia (BJP), and former diplomat Sujan Chinoy.
Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated after the Pahalgam terror attack, with India carrying out precision strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in the early hours of May 7.
Pakistan attempted to attack Indian military bases on May 8, 9, and 10. The Indian side responded strongly to the Pakistani actions.

MUMBAI: A day after Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray declared that whatever the people of Maharashtra wanted would happen, fuelling speculation about the estranged Thackeray cousins coming together, the Sena (UBT) mouthpiece Saamna published an old picture of him with Raj Thackeray on its front page. Meanwhile, Raj held another meeting of leaders of his party, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), on Saturday, reportedly seeking to gauge the mood among his workers as well as the people on the issue. After Raj, who parted ways with the undivided Shiv Sena in 2006, said in a podcast in April that he would set aside his differences with cousin Uddhav in the interest of Maharashtra, and Uddhav echoed similar sentiments, there has been rising pressure from the workers of both parties for their leaders to join hands. Fishing boats had been ordered ashore – the sea was too dangerous for small craft. Yet the 300-metre behemoth, laden with containers (some with calcium carbide, others brimming with polyethylene pellets), received clearance to sail. Within hours, it listed violently. By dawn, the MSC ELSA-3 lay at the bottom of the Arabian Sea, just 38 nautical miles from the port that had so recklessly released it. This was no act of God, as insurers and corporations will soon claim. It was the inevitable result of systems that value cargo over communities, schedules over safety and rhetoric over responsibility. For years, Kerala's fisherfolk warned that Vizhinjam's breakwaters would accelerate coastal erosion. Oceanographers documented how the monsoon's fury made these waters a gamble for large vessels. Yet when Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Adani-built port on May 2, he hailed it as India's 'maritime crown jewel' – a triumph of development over doubt. As Kerala's most ambitious port project nears its grand launch, Vizhinjam stands as a symbol of bold governance and strategic investment. Meanwhile, the Mediterranean Shipping Company that owns the vessel hesitates to release the full cargo manifest, while the port authorities feign surprise at a disaster they enabled. The bitter irony? Many sponsors of this year's World Environment Day on June 5 were corporate giants producing and utilising the very plastics now choking Kerala's coast. The same shipping industry that treats vessels as disposable assets will doubtless help celebrate World Oceans Day. Such is the theatre of modern environmentalism – where polluters fund awareness campaigns as their toxins enter the food chain. True accountability would look different. It would mean: Until then, this annual observance will remain what it has always been – a greenwashed pantomime. The ocean does not need our performative 'day'. It needs us to confront the uncomfortable truth: development that destroys its protectors is not progress. It is piracy. Kerala's coast now serves as a warning written in water, one we ignore at our peril. For when we sacrifice the environment on the altar of growth, we do not just lose ecosystems.
