FAO Food Price Index edges up in July

News18a day ago
Rome [Italy], August 8 (ANI/ WAM): The FAO Food Price Index, a benchmark for world food commodity prices, averaged 130.1 points in July 2025, up 1.6 per cent from June, driven primarily by rising international prices of meat and vegetable oils. Despite this monthly increase, the index remains 18.8 per cent below its peak in March 2022, although 7.6 per cent higher than its level in July 2024. The index tracks monthly changes in the international prices of a set of globally traded food commodities. In July, price increases in the meat and vegetable oil indices more than offset declines in the cereal, dairy and sugar indices. The FAO Cereal Price Index averaged 106.5 points, down 0.8 per cent from June. Declining wheat and sorghum prices outweighed increases in maize and barley. Fresh seasonal wheat harvests in the northern hemisphere put downward pressure, though adverse conditions of spring wheat in parts of northern America provided some price support. The FAO All Rice Price Index dropped 1.8 per cent, driven by ample export supplies and weak import demand. The FAO Vegetable Oil Price Index averaged 166.8 points in July, marking a sharp rise of 7.1 per cent from the previous month, reaching a three-year high. The increase reflected higher quotations for palm, soy and sunflower oils.Palm oil prices rose on robust global demand and improved competitiveness, while soy oil was supported by expectations of firm biofuel sector demand in the Americas. Sunflower oil prices also climbed due to tightening export supplies in the Black Sea region. In contrast, rapeseed oil prices declined with the arrival of new crop supplies in Europe. The FAO Meat Price Index averaged 127.3 points, up 1.2 per cent from June, reaching a new all-time high. The increase was led by higher prices for bovine and ovine meat, supported by strong import demand, particularly from China and the United States of America. Poultry meat prices also edged up slightly amid resumed imports from key partners following Brazil's regaining of its avian influenza-free status. Conversely, pig meat prices declined due to ample supplies and reduced global demand, especially in the European Union. The FAO Dairy Price Index edged down by 0.1 per cent from June to 155.3 points, marking the first decline since April 2024. Prices for butter and milk powders decreased, reflecting abundant export supplies and subdued import demand, particularly from Asia. However, international cheese prices continued to rise, driven by strong demand in Asian and Near East markets and tighter export availability in the European Union. The FAO Sugar Price Index averaged 103.3 points, down 0.2 per cent from the previous month, continuing its downward trend for a fifth consecutive month. Maharashtra govt wants to create 1 cr 'lakhpati didis', says CM Fadnavis; hails Ladki Bahin Yojana

Synopsis Maharashtra government aims to empower women by creating one crore "lakhpati didis," self-help group members earning over Rs 1 lakh annually. The Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana will continue, with increased aid, despite misuse. Malls will be established in 10 districts to sell products made by women's SHGs, highlighting their higher loan repayment rates and crucial role in economic development. ANI The Maharashtra government aims to create one crore "lakhpati didis" in the state as part of its women empowerment efforts, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Saturday."Lakhpati didi" is a term coined by the Union government for a self-help group (SHG) member who earns an annual household income of Rs 1 lakh or more. This income is calculated for at least four agricultural seasons and/or business cycles, with an average monthly income exceeding Rs 10,000. "Last year, we created 25 lakh lakhpati didis. This year, we want to add another 25 lakh. Our target is to make one crore lakhpati didis in Maharashtra. The Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana is part of this push. Some people tried to create confusion by claiming the scheme will be stopped. We won't shut it. Instead, we will increase aid at the right time," the CM Ladki Bahin Yojana is the state government's flagship scheme under which women beneficiaries get Rs 1500 as monthly aid provided they fulfil some conditions like limits to annual household income etc."Some people have misused the scheme. For example, men uploaded photos of motorbikes on the portal to claim benefits. We are removing such names from the beneficiaries' list," Fadnavi added. Maharashtra has the highest number of SHGs in the country, and malls will be set up in 10 districts where products made by them will be sold, the CM informed."We have increased funding and revolving funds. Women have a much higher rate of loan repayment compared to men. In many schemes, men have not even repaid 50 per cent of the loans," he women's support for the Mahayuti retaining power in the November 2024 assembly polls, the CM said "brothers should resolve to empower their sisters so they can protect themselves and their families"."Prime Minister Narendra Modi has transformed the status of women through schemes such as Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Mudra (loans) and Lakhpati Didi. Sixty per cent of Mudra beneficiaries in the last 10 years have been women. Twenty-five crore families have been lifted out of poverty thanks to the prime minister's schemes. He has brought women into the mainstream economy," Fadnavis was a time when India's share in global trade was 35 per cent and in the world's GDP was 30 per cent, the CM pointed out. "Our downfall began when we stopped respecting women and got divided into castes. For India to become a developed nation again, we must take women along," he said.
