Webb telescope spots galaxy at pivotal moment in the early universe

WASHINGTON, March 26 (Reuters) - Scientists using the James Webb Space Telescope have identified an ancient and faraway galaxy that provides evidence that an important transition period that brought the early universe out of its "dark ages" occurred sooner than previously thought.
Webb, which by peering across vast cosmic distances is looking way back in time, observed the galaxy called JADES-GS-z13-1 as it existed about 330 million years after the Big Bang event that initiated the universe roughly 13.8 billion years ago, the researchers said.
By way of comparison, Earth is about 4.5 billion years old.
The universe is thought to have experienced a rapid and exponential expansion in a fraction of a second after the Big Bang. After having cooled down sufficiently, there was a period called the cosmic dark ages when the infant universe was enveloped in a dense fog of hydrogen gas in an electrically neutral state.
What followed that was a time called the epoch of reionization when the universe first began to shine. Webb obtained evidence that JADES-GS-z13-1, one of the earliest-known galaxies, had made the transition into this epoch.
"In JADES-GS-z13-1, Webb has confirmed one of the most distant galaxies known to date," said astrophysicist Joris Witstok of the University of Copenhagen's Cosmic Dawn Center and the Niels Bohr Institute, lead author of the study published in the journal Nature, opens new tab.
"Unlike any other similarly distant galaxy, it shows a very clear, telltale signature that suggests the galaxy contains a remarkably powerful source of energetic ultraviolet radiation and has made an unexpectedly early start to reionization," Witstok said.
The time when the universe's first stars, black holes and galaxies formed is called cosmic dawn. As these formed, the ultraviolet radiation they emitted chemically altered the neutral hydrogen gas in a process called reionization and allowed ultraviolet light to escape, effectively "turning on the lights" in the cosmos.
"The universe, after the Big Bang, was a soup of hydrogen, helium and dark matter, slowly cooling off. Eventually, the universe was in a state where it was entirely opaque to energetic ultraviolet radiation. Hydrogen was floating around in a neutral state, meaning each little hydrogen atom had an electron bound to it," said astrophysicist and study co-author Kevin Hainline of the University of Arizona's Steward Observatory.
"But as the first stars and galaxies started to form from this early universe gas, the ultraviolet radiation from young stars and from growing supermassive black holes began to knock electrons off of these neutral hydrogen atoms. And over hundreds of millions of years the universe transitioned from being opaque to ultraviolet light to transparent to ultraviolet light, which is where we are now," Hainline said.
The researchers said the light that Webb detected in this galaxy may have come from vigorous star formation in the galaxy's nucleus, the presence of a growing supermassive black hole at the galactic core that is violently consuming surrounding material or some combination of those two factors.
This galaxy measures about 230 light-years wide, several hundred times smaller than the Milky Way. A light-year is the distance light travels in a year, 5.9 trillion miles (9.5 trillion km).
Webb, which was launched by NASA in 2022 and became operational in 2023, has begun to provide a deeper understanding of the early universe. It has spotted only four galaxies dating to slightly earlier than this one, including the current record holder observed at 294 million years after the Big Bang. Those galaxies have not displayed evidence of reionization.
The researchers were stunned to find that JADES-GS-z13-1 showed such evidence - in the form of a large bubble of ionized hydrogen surrounding it - because reionization was thought to have started many millions of years later.
"Many independent measurements have firmly established that reionization was not fully completed until the universe was about one billion years old - 700 million years later than this galaxy - placing this galaxy at what is likely the start of the reionization era. When exactly it began is one of the big outstanding questions in cosmology," Witstok said.

Astronomers have discovered strong evidence for a giant gas planet in a nearby solar system – with moons that could be habitable. The planet was first detected by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) in the star system Alpha Centauri, around 4.5 light years away. The Saturn–sized planet orbits a star similar to our Sun but is likely enveloped in a thick gas cloud meaning it could not support life itself. However, it could have icy moons which may provide the right conditions for life to form. 'This is an incredibly exciting find,' Dr Carly Howett, associate professor of space instrumentation at the University of Oxford, told the BBC. 'Four light years is a long way for us, but in the context of our galaxy, it's very close – it's practically in our cosmic backyard. 'The fact that this planet orbits a star so similar to our Sun, with comparable temperature and brightness, makes it an important target when we think about habitable worlds.' While it was first detected last year, the planet seemed to have disappeared in follow–up observations. Astronomers are now looking for it again to prove it definitely exists. Dr Howett explained that the planet may have 'disappeared' in recent observations because it is currently too close to its star, which is blocking the view with the amount of bright light being emitted. Experts now hope to use the Grace Roman Space Telescope – a new NASA instrument which is due to start operating in 2027 – to look for more signs of the planet. Further observations by JWST may be able to provide more detail on what the planet is made up of and what it looks like. This could also provide crucial evidence on how habitable any orbiting moons may be. Some of the gas giants in our own solar system – Saturn and Jupiter – have icy moons, and missions have been launched to explore whether they could support life. These planets, however, are relatively far away from our Sun. In comparison, this potential 'new' planet is close to its star. 'With this system being so close to us, any exoplanets found would offer our best opportunity to collect data on planetary systems other than our own,' Charles Beichman, from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said. 'Yet, these are incredibly challenging observations to make, even with the world's most powerful space telescope, because these stars are so bright, close, and move across the sky quickly.' 'If confirmed, the potential planet seen in the Webb image of Alpha Centauri A would mark a new milestone for exoplanet imaging efforts,' co–first author Aniket Sanghi, from the California Institute of Technology, said. 'Of all the directly imaged planets, this would be the closest to its star seen so far. It's also the most similar in temperature and age to the giant planets in our solar system, and nearest to our home, Earth. 'Its very existence in a system of two closely separated stars would challenge our understanding of how planets form, survive, and evolve in chaotic environments.' The new findings have been published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

Exclusive: Medical journal rejects Kennedy's call for retraction of vaccine study

Aug 11 (Reuters) - An influential U.S. medical journal is rejecting a call from Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to retract a large Danish study that found that aluminum ingredients in vaccines do not increase health risks for children, the journal's editor told Reuters. Kennedy has long promoted doubts about vaccines' safety and efficacy, and as health secretary has upended the federal government's process for recommending immunization. A recent media report said he has been considering whether to initiate a review of shots that contain aluminum, which he says are linked to autoimmune diseases and allergies. The study, opens new tab, which was funded by the Danish government and published in July in the Annals of Internal Medicine, analyzed nationwide registry data for more than 1.2 million children over more than two decades. It did not find evidence that exposure to aluminum in vaccines had caused an increased risk for autoimmune, atopic or allergic, or neurodevelopmental disorders. The work is by far the best available evidence on the question of the safety of aluminum in vaccines, said Adam Finn, a childhood vaccination expert in the UK and pediatrician at the University of Bristol, who was not involved in the study. "It's solid, (a) massive dataset and high-quality data," he said. Kennedy described the research as "a deceitful propaganda stunt by the pharmaceutical industry," and said the scientists who authored it had "meticulously designed it not to find harm" in a detailed Aug. 1 opinion piece on TrialSite News, an independent website focused on clinical research. He called on the journal to "immediately retract" the study. "I see no reason for retraction," Dr. Christine Laine, editor in chief of the Annals and a professor of medicine at Thomas Jefferson University, said in an interview. The journal plans to respond to criticism the article has received on its website, Laine said, but it does not intend to respond directly to Kennedy's piece, which was not submitted to the Annals. The lead author of the study, Anders Peter Hviid, head of the epidemiology research department at the Statens Serum Institut in Denmark, defended the work in a response post to TrialSite. He wrote that none of the critiques put forward by Kennedy were substantive and he categorically denied any deceit as implied by the secretary. "I am used to controversy around vaccine safety studies - especially those that relate to autism, but I have not been targeted by a political figurehead in this way before," Hviid said in an emailed response to Reuters. "I have confidence in our work and in our ability to reply to the critiques of our study." Kennedy had a number of critiques, including the lack of a control group, that the study deliberately excluded different groups of children to avoid showing a link between aluminum and childhood health conditions - including those with the highest levels of exposure - and that it did not include the raw data. Hviid responded to the criticisms on TrialSite. He said some of the points were related to study design choices that were reasonable to discuss but refuted others, including that the study was designed not to find a link. In fact he said, its design was based on a study led by Matthew Daley, opens new tab, a pediatrician at Kaiser Permanente Colorado, which did show a link, and which Kennedy cited in his article. There was no control group because in Denmark, only 2% of children are unvaccinated, which is too small for meaningful comparison, Hviid added. The data is available for researchers to analyze, but individual-level data is not released under Danish law, he said. Other prominent vaccine skeptics including those at the antivaccine organization Kennedy previously ran, Children's Health Defense, have similarly criticized the study on the Annals site. TrialSite staff defended the study for its scale, data transparency and funding while acknowledging the limitations of its design, a view seconded by some outside scientists. Laine said that while some of the issues Kennedy raised in his article may underscore acceptable limitations of the study, "they do not invalidate what they found, and there's no evidence of scientific misconduct." An HHS spokesman said the department had "no further comment than what the secretary said."
