Impact study on Bajausama Cultural Festival to boost tourism listing

Borneo Post3 days ago
The making 'kuih jala' is among the attractions at the Bajausama Ethnic Cultural Festival Sabah 2025.
TUARAN (Aug 11): The Faculty of Hotel and Tourism Management at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Sabah is conducting an impact study on the Bajausama Ethnic Cultural Festival Sabah 2025 to support efforts in listing the event in Malaysia's tourism calendar.
Now in its third edition, the festival serves as a platform to empower heritage and highlight the rich culture, customs, and unique traditions of the Bajausama community as a competitive tourism product for Sabah.
Dr Spencer Hedley Mogindol, senior lecturer at UiTM Sabah's Faculty of Hotel and Tourism Management, stated that the study is being carried out for documentation purposes under the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC), covering three key elements: economic impact, sociocultural influence and heritage food preservation.
'This impact study aims to gather data for future planning. MOTAC, as the festival's sponsor, wants to assess whether the event meets its objectives, including attracting more visitors and promoting the Bajau Sama community to the public.
'Without this study, we wouldn't have the necessary insights. The findings will help the organizing committee better plan next year's festival,' he said during an interview at the Bajau Sama Ethnic Cultural Center in Kampung Lok Batik on Sunday.
Dr Spencer, who is also the lead researcher, emphasized that the study's results will play a crucial role in securing the festival's place as a key event in Malaysia's national tourism calendar under MOTAC.
'This research is vital because the Sabah Tourism Board (STB) has already listed the festival in their calendar. Now, the focus is on MOTAC, the highest tourism authority. I believe this is a positive step that will benefit the community.
'As researchers, we aim to provide accurate data to the festival organizers, MOTAC, and other stakeholders. This information will help them improve future event management. Since this is the first such study, it will serve as a benchmark for organizers,' he added.
The four-day study involves 21 students and eight researchers from UiTM Sabah's Faculty of Hotel and Tourism Management, targeting 400 respondents, including visitors and exhibitors.
MOTAC, through the National Heritage Department, in collaboration with the state government, also organized the Heritage Flavors Festival@Sabah as part of the event. Activities included craft exhibitions, sales, the Ratu Serimpak (Bajau Headdress Queen) competition, Betitik (traditional musical performance), and a digital food photography contest.
The festival was inaugurated by Sabah Governor Tun Musa Aman, accompanied by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor and Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan.

Published on: Wednesday, August 13, 2025 Published on: Wed, Aug 13, 2025 Text Size: Tiong (second left) presenting a memento to Liew. Looking on from left are Shaharudin, Joniston and Lai. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah remains firmly committed to maintaining the highest standards of tourist safety, said Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew. She gave the assurance in her welcome address at the Coordination Meeting on Tourism with Federal and State agencies, chaired by Tourism, Arts and Culture (Motac) Minister Dauk Seri Tiong King Sing, here, Tuesday. 'On behalf of the State Government, I extend my sincere appreciation to Motac for your continuous support in strengthening Malaysia's tourism industry. 'With strong collaboration between Motac, the State Government and our enforcement agencies, I am confident that we can make Sabah not only one of the most beautiful destinations in the world, but also one of the safest,' Liew said.. She thanked Tiong for his continuous concern over important safety issues affecting Semporna, in particular, saying 'We believe we share the same commitment, and the progress we've made is aligned with the Federal Government.' 'For us, ensuring a safe tourism environment is not just about protecting lives and prioritising well-being, but it is also about safeguarding Malaysia's reputation as a world-class travel destination. Your (Federal Minister's) continued attention and commitment to this pertinent matter means a lot,' Liew added. She reiterated that tourist safety is critical in maintaining the confidence of both domestic and international travellers as well as potential tourism investors. 'In this age of social media, even news of an isolated safety incident can spread rapidly and adversely impact our tourism image. That is why we must always remain vigilant.' Acknowledging that in recent times, Sabah has faced several safety concerns involving accidents during activities such as scuba diving, snorkelling and stand-up paddle-boarding in marine and island areas, Liew emphasised that these underline the pressing need for stronger safety protocols, strict compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs) and enhanced training for guides and boat operators. To address these, she asserted that the State Government has taken decisive action. 'For instance, we have strengthened collaboration with the Royal Malaysia Police, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) and the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) to boost patrols and monitoring,' said Liew. Multilingual safety signage has been installed at high-risk tourist locations such as at the arrival hall of the Tawau Airport and Sandakan Airport, she added. Also present were Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, Motac Secretary-General Datuk Shaharudin Abu Sohot, Deputy State Secretary (Administration), Datuk Norlija @ Norlijah Danin, Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment (KePKAS), Datuk Josie Lai, Deputy Permanent Secretary I to KePKAS, Mary Malangking, Sabah Parks Director Datuk Dr Maklarin Lakim and Sabah Tourism Board (STB) CEO Julinus Jeffery Jimit. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? MOTAC allocates RM10.14m to Negeri Sembilan for tourism, heritage conservation projects

SEREMBAN — The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) has allocated RM10.14 million to Negeri Sembilan this year under the Restoration, Conservation, Renovation and Upgrading Programme (PPUN), as part of efforts to preserve heritage and strengthen the state's tourism sector. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun (picture) said the allocation reflects the federal government's holistic and strategic commitment to ensuring the state's heritage, tourism and cultural identity are preserved, elevated and developed. Aminuddin said 18 tourism and conservation projects have been approved under PPUN in districts including Port Dickson, Kuala Pilah, Rembau, Jelebu and Tampin. 'All these projects will breathe new life into the state's tourism destinations and reinforce the Visit Negeri Sembilan Year 2026 campaign,' he told reporters here today. According to him, one of the key projects is the RM1.2 million conservation and relocation of Masjid Lama Parit Istana to the Masjid Tanjung Beringin area, aimed at preserving Islamic history and traditional Malay architecture. He said RM800,000 has been allocated to upgrade Masjid Tanjung Beringin, transforming the mosque into a more inclusive and conducive heritage and worship centre, as well as improving the lighting and landscape of the Port Dickson Clock Tower. '(Other projects include) the maintenance of landmarks at the Sunggala Roundabout, the Lukut-Sepang junction and the Port Dickson gateway (as well as) development of ecotourism at the Gunung Datuk Eco Forest Park, Kenaboi State Park and Ulu Bendul Eco Forest Park. 'RM500,000 has been allocated to upgrade the Pulau Burung jetty and the watchtower (phase two), which will create new opportunities for the maritime tourism sector and biodiversity conservation,' he said. Aminuddin said that based on Tourism Malaysia's accommodation survey, the state recorded a significant rise in international tourist arrivals last year, with 0.46 million visitors compared to 0.34 million in 2023, an increase of 35.1 per cent. He added that the increase placed Negeri Sembilan sixth among 13 states and three Federal Territories, making it one of Malaysia's emerging tourism destinations. — BERNAMA

SEREMBAN: The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) has approved RM10.14 million for Negeri Sembilan under the Restoration, Conservation, Renovation and Upgrading Programme (PPUN). Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun stated that the funding highlights the federal government's commitment to preserving the state's heritage and tourism identity. A total of 18 projects across districts like Port Dickson, Kuala Pilah, Rembau, Jelebu, and Tampin have been greenlit under the initiative. Aminuddin emphasised that these projects will revitalise tourism spots and support the Visit Negeri Sembilan Year 2026 campaign. One major project involves the RM1.2 million conservation and relocation of Masjid Lama Parit Istana to Masjid Tanjung Beringin. The mosque upgrade aims to safeguard Islamic heritage and traditional Malay architectural elements. Additionally, RM800,000 will enhance Masjid Tanjung Beringin, improving its facilities and surroundings. Lighting and landscaping upgrades at the Port Dickson Clock Tower are also part of the plan. Key landmarks at Sunggala Roundabout, Lukut-Sepang junction, and Port Dickson gateway will undergo maintenance. Ecotourism development at Gunung Datuk Eco Forest Park, Kenaboi State Park, and Ulu Bendul Eco Forest Park is another focus. A RM500,000 allocation will upgrade the Pulau Burung jetty and watchtower, boosting maritime tourism and biodiversity conservation. Aminuddin noted a 35.1% rise in international tourist arrivals to Negeri Sembilan in 2024 compared to 2023. The state ranked sixth in tourist arrivals among Malaysia's 13 states and three Federal Territories.
