‘It has it all': why The Wedding Singer is my feelgood movie
Back in the days when I first attempted to be an adult – first desk job, first flat, first live-in girlfriend – there was no such thing as streaming, catch-up, Blu-Ray, 4K, HD or even widescreen tellies. Instead, I owned a 15in Sony Trinitron TV that had taken me months to save up for on my £10-a-week school paper round – smaller than the massive one we'd rented from Currys as students – and a VHS player. The only films I owned were three ex-rental cassettes I'd bought from the local Blockbuster: There's Something About Mary, Enemy of the State and The Wedding Singer.
Once we'd watched a bit of the terrestrial channels (I was too poor to afford Sky), my girlfriend – who was training to be a teacher – would go to bed at 10pm and I'd settle down for the night with one of my three films. My favourite was The Wedding Singer because it has it all – comedy, 80s hairdos, a great soundtrack, a farcical ending and loads of quotable lines. ('Say hi to your brother Tito', 'Once again, things that could have been brought to my attention YESTERDAY', 'Why don't you write a song about it? You can call it – I got punched in the nose for sticking my face into other people's business.') I wasn't alone in my passion. One bored day at work, my friend Phil emailed me a good half of the script to Dumb and Dumber he'd written from memory. 'But what if he shot you in the face?'
The Wedding Singer stars Adam Sandler in one of his first mainstream roles, no longer doing the silly voices and mannerisms he put on for cult classics Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison. Sandler plays a – yes – wedding singer who sinks into depression after getting jilted at the alter for losing his ambitions of being a rock star. He then gradually falls in love with Drew Barrymore (who wouldn't?) even though she's due to marry her (it turns out) cheating boyfriend, Glenn (Matthew Glave). You can guess how it all turns out. Along the way, we get to meet a Sugarhill Gang-rapping granny, a Boy George lookalike who only knows the first verse to Do You Really Want to Hurt Me, and what I argue is Steve Buscemi in his best ever role: the brother of the groom, giving a drunken speech in a hideous flouncy pink shirt. ('Remember that time in Puerto Rico when we picked up those two – well, I guess they were prostitutes, but I don't remember paying … ')
With its bad perms, dodgy tashes, oversize lapels and florescent Lycra, the 80s setting made me feel old even in the 90s. Come 2025, I shudder to realise that if Marty McFly went back in time 30 years from now, they'd be playing Parklife at the Enchantment Under the Sea dance, and the song from the near future that 'I guess you people aren't ready for yet, but your kids are going to love' would be Wonderwall. The 80s, meanwhile, are as far away as 2065. Yikes.
One thing I love most about The Wedding Singer is the soundtrack that includes You Spin Me Round (Like a Record), Blue Monday and Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic. Barrymore sings a bit of 99 Luftballons into her oversize headphones. Sandler gets to perform his own compositions: Somebody Kill Me ('I was listening to the Cure a lot when I wrote this') and Grow Old With You – the latter he performs on a plane to stop Barrymore from marrying the evil Glenn. The ending features a brilliant cameo from 1998 Billy Idol playing 1980s Billy Idol, who wakes from his booze-addled slumber to shove Glenn in the airplane toilets. ('Excuse me, sir. I have to serve the beverages.')
By the way, I haven't even had to watch the film or look at the internet to check all these facts and quotes. I know I'm right, because I have The Wedding Singer committed to photographic memory. Another contributor to this column miffed that he's watched his feelgood movie, Notting Hill, maybe 12 times. Pffft. I've must have watched The Wedding Singer at least 100. At my peak, it was a two- or three-times-a-week habit. It's a habit that – if only I still owned a VHS player (or had a subscription to Prime Video) – I'd happily start up all over again. Although, with hindsight, I really should have just gone to bed early.

Fern Britton has claimed her ex-husband, TV chef Phil Vickery, 'stopped talking' to her following the loss of her mum. The TV presenter, 67, and Phil, 64, were married for two decades before their 2020 divorce, which came as Fern's parents died. In a new interview, Fern has claimed Phil stopped talking to her after the death of her mother in 2018, and she's had no contact since. 'He hasn't spoken to me for six years now. As soon as my mum died, he stopped talking to me,' she said told Yours Magazine. Fern shares daughter Winnie Vickery, 23, with Phil, so says she will try to never bad-mouth him. The former This Morning presenter explained: 'Winnie adores him. I'm not going to bad-mouth him in front of her; at least, I try very hard not to. I was the child of divorced parents and my mum never bad-mouthed my father.' When announcing their separation in 2020, Fern's statement read: 'After more than 20 happy years together, Phil and I have decided to go our separate ways. 'We will always share a great friendship and our lovely children.' She later said that she and Phil 'fell apart' following the death of her parents. Fern's mother, Ruth Britton, died in January 2018. Her father, actor Tony Britton, died shortly after. Fern and Phil's divorce came after her 2016 hysterectomy and a near-fatal sepsis diagnosis. 'Then my mum died in 2018 and my dad died in 2019, and then my marriage [to chef Vickery] died,' she said in a recent interview with The Telegraph, 'Next, I discovered that my phone had been hacked for 15 years. And last year a man who was stalking me for several years went to court and was given a restraining order. 'For a while, I was wondering what else could possibly happen. But lots of women endure difficult stuff and we just live with it and keep going.' Phil was Fern's second husband, as she was married to Clive Jones for two years before divorcing in 2000. Clive is the father of Fern's three other children: Jack, Harry, and Grace. She added that divorce was 'not a breeze', adding: 'No matter how you hope it's going to be easy and pain-free, inevitably it isn't. It's difficult and brings up a lot of unpleasant characteristics in everybody.' Fern previously opened up about her mental and physical health struggles following the divorce and her parents' deaths, saying she 'fell into this era of indolence' where she 'just started lying in bed later and later and later'. 'What was the purpose of getting up and getting dressed or getting showered or cleaning my teeth because I will soon be back in bed. 'Why don't I start smoking? Yes. Drinking. Yes, eating yes, the whole thing. And then it took me about a year to realise that I put a lot of weight on, that I was not breathing well.' More Trending Now, Fern says she's found her old self again, and is 'enjoying life and having fun' in her Cornish home, where she moved after her divorce. Phil and Fern originally met on the set of BBC Two's Ready Steady Cook and married in spring 2000. Fern has just released her 11th novel, A Cornish Legacy, which tells the story of a woman called Cordelia Jago, as she inherits a crumbling mansion in Cornwall having lost everything. Nintendo Switch 2 – live: Where to buy a console in the UK
A week on from launch, and the Nintendo Switch 2 is still flying off the shelves. So far this week, I've seen short-lived restocks at Amazon, EE, Very and ShopTo. Nintendo and Currys both went live earlier today, but they've already sold out. Very has now dropped stock twice this week. Both times, consoles sold out in just a couple of minutes. EE briefly made its Mario Kart World bundle available to everyone, but that didn't stick around either, and has already disappeared from the site. Right now, the only live option is a pricier bundle for existing EE mobile customers, which includes the console, the game and a 12-month Switch Online subscription. More stock is expected this week, with Smyths Toys likely to be the next retailer to go live. I'll keep updating this page with all the latest drops as they happen, so stay tuned. EE: In stock now for existing customers, delivered within 1-3 working days Smyths Toys: Expected to restock 12-14 June Nintendo Switch 2 specs The Switch 2 might look familiar, but there's a lot going on underneath. It's powered by a new custom Nvidia chip, so games don't just load faster, they look better and run more smoothly. You get 12GB of RAM (up from 4GB on the original Switch), and most of that goes straight into powering games, not just background stuff. The screen is still LCD, not OLED, but it's bigger at 7.9in and has 1080p resolution. It supports HDR and a 120Hz refresh rate. Colours pop more, and motion looks buttery-smooth in handheld mode. There's also DLSS upscaling built in, so older games look better. Sadly, while it supports variable refresh rates, it doesn't work when docked – just in handheld mode. Nintendo Switch 2 price The Nintendo Switch 2 on its own costs £399.99, and the main bundle with Mario Kart World costs £429.99. Buying the bundle saves you £40 compared to picking up the game separately, so it's better value if you're planning to grab it anyway. No big discounts yet – it's not even been out a week, after all – but some retailers have larger, more expensive bundles. These include the new Switch 2 camera (£49, the Pro controller (£74.99, and the official carry case and screen protector (£20.99, as well as extra games and accessories. Nintendo Switch 2 launch games There are plenty of new Nintendo Switch 2 games at launch. Mario Kart World is the big one, but you've also got upgraded versions of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, plus mammoth games like Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition and Hogwarts Legacy – two games that really test the console's muscle. Other launch day games include Hades 2, Split Fiction, Sonic X Shadow Generations, Street Fighter 6, Survival Kids and Suikoden I & II HD Remaster. You've also got Yakuza 0: Director's Cut, Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess, and Deltarune Chapters 1–4, plus more niche picks like Fantasy Life i and Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD. Civilization VII and No Man's Sky are here too, and Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour acts as a mini showcase for the new hardware. On top of that, loads of older Nintendo titles have been patched with free performance updates, and Wind Waker, F-Zero GX and Soul Calibur II are now available through the new Switch Online GameCube library. When will John Lewis restock the Nintendo Switch 2? John Lewis has been unusually quiet when it comes to the Nintendo Switch 2. The retailer didn't sell the console on launch day, and unlike Amazon, Very and ShopTo, it hasn't restocked it since. Even Amazon and Nintendo, which had brief restocks earlier this week, have seen at least something. John Lewis? Nada. The Switch 2 product page is still live, so it's likely more stock is on the way — but it's unclear when. I'm hoping very soon. For now, you can only get a Switch 2 at EE. None of the bundles floating around right now come with any actual savings. You're basically paying the same as you would if you added everything to your basket separately. Currys has a bunch of bundles with extra games, accessories and storage, but they're more about convenience than value. You're not getting a deal – you're just getting everything in one go. If you were planning to buy all the extras anyway, it saves you a bit of faff. If you're still hunting for a Nintendo Switch 2 and don't want to wait weeks to start playing, some retailers are offering faster delivery than others. Currys is your best bet right now. It has the console in stock and is offering free next-day home delivery, or free in-store collection within two days. Nintendo also has stock, with delivery taking around three to four days. EE is still selling the console to existing mobile customers, with delivery typically within one to three working days. For £20 upfront and £22 a month over 24 months, you get the Nintendo Switch 2 console with 256GB of storage, a digital copy of Mario Kart World, a 12-month Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership, and 24-month Gamer's and Video Data Passes. The data passes are a bit irrelevant for the Switch 2, but it's nice to have. It means you can stream and play games on your phone without using up your data. Fern Britton's 'rock bottom' double tragedy that ended marriage to Phil Vickery
Fern Britton was left heartbroken following the breakdown of her marriage to Phil Vickery, with the former couple's split coming after they were hit with a double tragedy TV star Fern Britton has revealed the brutal way in which her ex husband Phil Vickery cut contact with her after their split, but sadly tragedy struck long before their estrangment. Fern and Phil, who met on the set of Ready Steady Cook and married in 2000, were known as one of television's most enduring partnerships before announcing their break-up to the surprise of many in 2020. Speaking to Good Morning Britain that year, heartbroken Fern revealed the personal struggles that led to their separation, as she explained: "My mum died and my father died and unfortunately Phil and I fell apart." Her mother, Ruth, sadly passed away in April 2018, with her father, Tony, following in December 2019, leaving her at rock bottom. And this week, five years on from their split, Fern admitted that Phil stopped talking to her after her mum died. In a new interview with Yours magazine. She said: "He hasn't spoken to me for six years now. As soon as my mum died, he stopped talking to me." After her split from the This Morning chef, Fern opened up in an interview with the Daily Mail and reflected on her struggles. She shared: "Life had knocked me for six". She recounted times despair, explaining: "I remember endless days of indolence, not being able to go anywhere, not doing anything, not wanting to get out of bed." Opening up further about life post-divorce, she said: "I'm rebuilt and I'm doing okay. I was lost, then I found a bit of purpose again and it's been lovely." While appearing on the Book Club podcast in 2021, Fern also reflected on the huge personal losses she's suffered. She said: "Too much happened in the past couple of years - I've lost my marriage and I moved out of what was our family home." And later speaking to Woman and Home magazine, Fern explained that the former couple's lives will always be intertwined, revealing: "We simply needed to follow our own paths. Over time we realised we weren't necessarily having the kind of life we once did. It seemed right to say 'thank you' and move on. But we do have a good friendship." "Phil and I had the greatest fun together and we have the most beautiful daughter together, Winnie... so we will always be connected." The star added: "Life has changed for me in the last 10 years, especially with my career. So it's lovely to think I can just concentrate on writing, the kids and getting on with life. This feels quite comfortable, and Phil and I knew it was the right thing to do." Fern has also previously revealed the surprising catalyst for her divorce from her first husband, TV executive Clive Jones. Appearing on the Walking The Dog with Emily Dean podcast, she said: "He had this degree and I don't. I secretly went off and did the Mensa. I lied, I said I was going somewhere else, and it took a day to do this test. I passed - and quite well too. "Then he was furious so he did it because he's got a huge brain. But he's not a problem solver and he didn't get it. So an immense rift opened." Fern split from Clive after more than a decade together and the birth of their three kids, twins Jack and Harry and daughter Grace. They called it quits officially in 2000, and later that year, she tied the knot with Phil.
