NASCAR takeaways: Shane van Gisbergen celebrates new contract, dad's visit at Watkins Glen

Shane van Gisbergen might have a question.
Is there still time to renegotiate?
The 36-year-old NASCAR Cup Series rookie celebrated his new contract extension with Trackhouse Racing by winning his fourth road-course race of the season Sunday, Aug. 10, at Watkins Glen. He led 38 of the 90 laps and finished 11 seconds in front of runner-up Christopher Bell.
In the process, van Gisbergen set a new Cup Series record, becoming the first rookie to capture four races in a season. He is now tied with Denny Hamlin for the most victories in 2025.
Is there any chance to add a few more zeroes to his deal?
'That's the stuff you dream about, right?' SVG said on the USA broadcast after his burnout. 'I'm just a very lucky guy to get to drive for an amazing bunch of people and just execute. The day just went flawlessly. I can't believe it. Really enjoyed it.'
Chris Buescher, William Byron and Chase Briscoe followed van Gisbergen and Bell to the stripe, solidifying the top five. The afternoon produced just three cautions, two of which arrived for the stage breaks.
1. Here's why SVG's win at Watkins Glen was important
Not only did van Gisbergen just ink a new contract, his dad was in attendance to watch his triumph at Watkins Glen. The father-son duo had not seen each other since Christmas.
'It's been a very tough year for dad,' van Gisbergen said. 'He hasn't been able to travel, so to have him here for the next three weeks and to share this with him, it's amazing.'
The victory also gives van Gisbergen 22 playoff points. If the No. 88 Chevy is able to turn in a solid performance or two during the first round of the postseason, a trip to Round 2 seems almost guaranteed.
And Round 2 features a road course. He's claimed four of those in a row.
SVG knows the reality, though.
'It ain't gonna be easy,' he said. 'That's for sure.'
2. NASCAR playoff standings: Chris Buescher stays happy
Buescher went to Victory Lane at Watkins Glen last season, and though he failed to repeat Sunday, he completed another objective. He continued building his playoff case.
Buescher ran second behind van Gisbergen until the final lap when Bell sped past him. Buescher placed third.
He also collected Stage 1 and the resulting points.
Overall, Buescher gained 12 points and sits 34 in front of the postseason cutline. He holds the 16th and final spot.
Ryan Preece remains in 17th after a 13th-place finish. Every driver behind Buescher and Preece probably needs a miracle (read: a win) to surpass them.
3. NASCAR schedule brings Richmond for start of Saturday Night Fever
The last two races of the Cup Series' regular season will be Saturday night affairs, starting this coming week at Richmond Raceway. With the Xfinity Series taking the week off, it'll be the Truck Series on Friday night followed by Saturday night's Cook Out 400 on the speedy three-quarter-mile oval.
And for something different and probably fun, tune in Sunday to watch the ARCA Series race the one-mile dirt oval — the Springfield Mile — at the Illinois State Fairgrounds. Full-bodied stock cars on the dirt, Sunday afternoon at 2 on FS1.

Trackhouse Opens up on Connor Zilisch's Chances of Racing Return After Scary Fall

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Trackhouse Racing owner Justin Marks has opened up about the timeline for Connor Zilisch's return to NASCAR after the injury he suffered while celebrating his Xfinity Series race win at Watkins Glen International. Zilisch tried to climb on top of his car to celebrate his victory, but he lost his balance and fell hard. The 19-year-old driver was rushed to the medical center, where he was diagnosed with a broken collarbone, which meant he would be absent from the Cup Series race for Trackhouse the following day. With the next weekend being an off-weekend for the Xfinity Series, it will offer Zilisch enough time to recover. However, it remains to be seen if he will be race-ready for the following race weekend. Speaking on the topic of when the young driver would return, Marks suggested that the matter isn't simple, as it warrants discussions with several parties while ensuring Zilisch receives the care and motivation to bounce back stronger. He said: "I think it's a discussion that we all have to have. We haven't really talked about much, obviously, since yesterday, but in the little bit that we've discussed in some of the quiet moments over the last 24 hours, it's going to have to be a group decision. More"It's going to have to be sponsors, Chevrolet, the team, taking care of his development, taking care of him as a human and as an athlete, and then keeping his motivations high and making sure he knows he's got a group of people behind him that are supportive of him." Zilisch gave a detailed account of the events that led to his fall. He said: "I was climbing out of the car, and obviously the window net was on the door and as soon as they started spraying water, my foot slipped and the last thing I remember was being halfway down and falling. So glad it wasn't any worse and that the collarbone the extent of the injuries, but I hate I couldn't make it to the race today and give myself a shot to get a good result for Trackhouse and Red Bull." Zilisch has been having a spectacular Xfinity season so far, securing five wins in the last eight races. He currently leads the points standings in his rookie year. However, with his racing return date still not confirmed, it remains to be seen if he will be ready to race in the Wawa 250 at Daytona International Speedway on August 22.

Where's the NASCAR In-Season Challenge trophy? Ty Gibbs is looking for other wins

Ty Gibbs doesn't know the whereabouts of his NASCAR In-Season Challenge trophy. 'Honestly, I forgot about it for the last week or two or whenever Indy was,' he said with a chuckle this week. His best guess: the Joe Gibbs Racing shop in Huntersville, North Carolina. But it's not that the 22-year-old doesn't care. He just remains hyperfocused on the next few weeks. Gibbs sits 19th in the playoff standings, three spots and 87 points back of the final postseason berth ahead of the Cup Series' trip to Watkins Glen this weekend. Three weeks left in the regular season. No time to worry about anything else. Ty Gibbs reflects on NASCAR In-Season Challenge win Gibbs claimed the inaugural in-season tournament by piloting his No. 54 Toyota to 21st during the Brickyard 400 at the end of July. In the final event of the five-week bracket, he just needed to beat Ty Dillon, who ended up in 28th. 'It was very cool,' said Gibbs, who wouldn't mind seeing the challenge return for a second year. 'I think the fans liked it as well because they could bet on it a lot, too. It was cool, fun to do and fun to be a part of.' Afterward, Gibbs pledged $10,000 of his $1 million prize to a charity of Dillon's choosing. It was an impromptu thought, but one Gibbs and Dillon fully intend to work out. 'We're in the midst of talking about it right now, so just seeing where his idea is there,' Gibbs said. He has not spent any of the money yet. When asked if he plans to splurge on something fun, he said it will probably go toward racing expenses. There's that focus again. Ty Gibbs heads to Watkins Glen in search of first win Gibbs doesn't fantasize about his first win. 'I don't idolize it,' he said before clarifying. 'But I focus on it a lot and just try to go at it every week and make it an option every week.' Gibbs rose through the ranks as one of NASCAR's hottest prospects. In March of 2019, he debuted in ARCA. He scored his first victory that June. Across three ARCA seasons, he ran 47 races and settled into the top 10 in all but five of them. He scored 18 wins. Same deal in the Xfinity Series. He sped to a victory in his first race on the Daytona road course in February of 2021. In 66 races at that level, he already holds 12 wins. But in the Cup Series, he's still pursuing that first visit to Victory Lane. Gibbs has started 109 races over four years since his 2022 debut at Pocono. He's gotten close. After eight top-five finishes in 2024, he's racked up four this season. That includes a second-place mark at the Chicago Street Race last month. 'We're kind of a young team,' Gibbs said. 'A lot of our guys are new in that position, so just kind of getting a feel for that and everybody getting experience has been the biggest key.' Last fall, Gibbs received his first taste of the playoffs. He gained entry on points. This year, that looks like a tougher proposition. He probably needs a win at Watkins Glen, Richmond or Daytona. 'They're all circled,' Gibbs said. This article originally appeared on The Daytona Beach News-Journal: NASCAR driver Ty Gibbs remains playoff-focused before Watkins Glen
