Putin sacks Russia's land forces chief Salyukov amid Ukraine war struggles
Salyukov, 70, will become a deputy to ex-defence minister Sergei Shoigu, who was removed from last year and made Secretary of the Security Council. The move was announced in a Kremlin decree.
Less than a week ago, Salyukov was running the grand Victory Day military parade in Red Square with current Defence Minister Andrey Belousov, marking the 80th anniversary of victory over Nazi Germany.
Russian law enforcement has charged more than a dozen military and defence sector officials since last year, many of whom were accused of siphoning money from major projects for personal gain.
Shoigu, a longtime Putin ally, was downgraded last year after holding various top positions since the early 1990s.
The Kremlin has denied that the arrests and sackings in Russia's top brass were a purge of the military establishment following setbacks in Ukraine.
Salyukov had been in charge of Russia's land forces since 2014, overseeing involvement in the Syrian civil war and the offensive on Ukraine. He was a deputy head of the general staff for four years before that.
Russia, which allegedly planned to take Ukraine, a country with a much smaller military, in three days, has been stuck in a bloody and grinding three-year conflict that has left thousands dead.
Ukraine and Russia are to hold their first direct peace talks in more than three years in Istanbul on Thursday or Friday. — AFP

THE Kremlin said Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump will hold a summit meeting within the next few days. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said he's ready to join the talks, too, as the US pushes to end Russia's invasion. Russia and the US have agreed on a venue for the meeting between the two presidents, which will be disclosed later, and 'we are starting to work on specific issues,' with the aim of holding the talks next week, Kremlin foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov told reporters Thursday. The announcement came a day after Putin met with Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff for nearly three hours of talks in the Kremlin. Trump has threatened to hit purchasers of Russian oil with secondary tariffs unless Putin agrees to a truce by Friday as the US pushes for a deal to end the war that's now in its fourth year. After returning to the White House on a pledge to bring the war to a rapid end, Trump has voiced growing frustration over Putin's refusal to accept a ceasefire following six phone calls between them since February. Trump said Wednesday he didn't regard the latest developments as a 'breakthrough,' though the first summit meeting between the two leaders since 2018 would imply they've made progress on a resolution. The worry for Zelenskiy and his European allies is that Putin may persuade Trump to concede too much in reaching a settlement. They also have a multitude of doubts about how any agreement might be enforced and what security guarantees Ukraine will receive. Zelenskiy said he and European allies discussed 'various formats' of peace talks with Trump during a call on Wednesday, including 'two bilateral and one trilateral' meeting between the three presidents. 'Ukraine is not afraid of meetings and expects the same brave approach from the Russian side,' he said in a post on social media. Traders piled into assets that could benefit from a deal. Ukraine's dollar bonds were the best performers across emerging and frontier markets tracked by Bloomberg. European currencies also rallied. Putin told reporters the United Arab Emirates could be a suitable venue for the summit with Trump, during Kremlin talks with UAE President Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Thursday. He reiterated that he didn't object to meeting Zelenskiy under the right conditions, though he said they don't exist now. Russia didn't respond when Witkoff raised the prospect of a trilateral meeting involving Putin, Trump and Zelenskiy, according to Ushakov. The Kremlin wants to focus first on talks between Putin and Trump, he said. The White House hasn't commented on the proposed summit so far. Trump told reporters Wednesday there was a 'very good chance' he would meet with Putin and Zelenskiy soon to try to broker peace between the two countries. Zelenskiy said he and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz 'coordinated our positions' during a phone call Thursday, and national security advisers from Ukraine, the US and Europe will hold an online meeting later to align positions. 'Ukraine and Germany share the view that the war must be ended as soon as possible with a dignified peace,' Zelenskiy said. 'The parameters of ending this war will shape the security landscape of Europe for decades to come.' Trump was positive about the possibility of a ceasefire during his call with Zelenskiy and European leaders, according to several people with knowledge of the discussion. He also suggested that Putin would be open to entering into peace talks in exchange for discussing land swaps, the people said. Putin has laid claim to Ukraine's Black Sea peninsula of Crimea, which Russia illegally annexed in 2014, as well as the eastern and southern Ukrainian regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson that his troops don't fully occupy. Ukraine has said it's not prepared to cede any of its territory. It's demanding that Russia withdraws its troops and pay reparations for the devastation inflicted on the country since the February 2022 invasion. The US had previously offered to recognize Crimea as Russian as part of any deal, and to effectively cede control of parts of other Ukrainian regions that Russia occupies. As part of those earlier proposals, control over areas of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson would be returned to Ukraine. King test drives Russian-made Aurus luxury car during visit to top auto institute in Moscow
MOSCOW, Aug 7 — His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, today visited the Central Scientific Research Automobile and Automotive Engines Institute (NAMI) here to observe advancements in Russian automotive technology. Upon arrival, His Majesty was received by NAMI chief executive officer Fedor Nazarov. Also present were Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, who is also the Minister-in-Attendance, Foreign Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Amran Mohamed Zin, and Malaysian Ambassador to Russia Datuk Cheong Loon Lai. The visit began with a briefing by Nazarov and a video presentation on NAMI, a premier Russian scientific and engineering institute established in 1918 as the country's first automobile research laboratory. Today, NAMI is among Europe's largest automotive testing centres, with laboratory facilities, test tracks, and a special zone for autonomous vehicles. Among its key projects is the development of the AURUS luxury vehicle range, designed and manufactured at NAMI facilities. His Majesty showed keen interest in the institute's operations, vehicle models and production processes, posing various questions throughout the visit. Sultan Ibrahim later toured the showroom with Russian Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Albert Karimov, before visiting the assembly plant. Before concluding the visit, His Majesty took the wheel of an AURUS vehicle for a brief test drive. "At the suggestion of the American side, an agreement was essentially reached to hold a bilateral meeting at the highest level in the coming days, that is, a meeting between President Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump," Ushakov said. "We are now beginning concrete preparations together with our American colleagues," Interfax news agency quoted him as saying. He did not say where the summit would take place. Putin was due later on Thursday to meet the president of the United Arab Emirates, which sources have previously suggested as a possible venue. Russia's stock market index rose 4.5% after the announcement of the meeting. There has been no summit of U.S. and Russian leaders since Putin and Joe Biden met in Geneva in June 2021. Russia went to war in Ukraine in February 2022, plunging relations into deep crisis. Trump has moved to mend relations with Russia and try to end the war, although in his public comments he has veered between admiration and sharp condemnation of Putin. Ushakov said Trump's envoy, Steve Witkoff, at a meeting with Putin on Wednesday, had raised the possibility of a three-way meeting of Trump, Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. But he said the Russian side had left this proposal "completely without comment". "We propose, first of all, to focus on preparing for a bilateral meeting with Trump and we believe that the main thing is for this meeting to be successful and productive," Ushakov said.
