Your iPhone will get a stunning new look and most useful free upgrade in years
Apple has confirmed the upcoming release of iOS 26 which gets a new look and a hugely important feature that will stop annoying spam calls.
It's been a very busy week for Apple. The US technology giant has just confirmed the official release of iOS 26 (yes, that name is correct and no, it won't be called iOS 19 as many would have expected).
This latest and greatest operating system will arrive on devices later this year and brings with it a shiny new Liquid Glass appearance that will make things look far more glossy and futuristic. A refreshed home screen will be available with a clock that adapts depending on what's on the screen and wallpapers that can be given a 3D appearance.
Liquid Glass also brings new customisation options to app icons and widgets, including a stunning clear look which makes your apps blend seamlessly with the background.
Other extras also include improved messaging, instant language translation and a new way to game on the iPhone.
These are all a nice boost from Apple, but there will be another big reason to download and install iOS 26 when it appears this autumn.
Apple has added a new feature in this release called Call Screening, which won't let unknown numbers start bothering you until the person on the other end of the phone confirms who they are.
Once they have explained to Apple's Intelligence exactly what they want, a message then appears on the iPhone's display letting you know why they are ringing you - it's then up to you if you let the call come through.
If you are happy for the calls to continue, you can unblock the number, and if you suddenly don't want to be hassled by the number, you can add it back to the Call Screening list.
With so many of us now getting bothered by unwanted calls, this could be one of the most useful changes ever from Apple.
There are some other neat updates as well including Hold Assist which lets you know when someone at the call centre finally answers the phone. The Messages app will also check unknown numbers and place texts in a separate spam-style folder.
'iOS 26 shines with the gorgeous new design and meaningful improvements to the features users rely on every day, making iPhone even more helpful,' said Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of Software Engineering.
'Experiences are more expressive and personal, from the Lock Screen and Home Screen, to new capabilities across Phone and Messages that help users focus on the connections that matter most. And with powerful new Apple Intelligence capabilities integrated across the system, users can get things done easier than ever.'

The Amazon iPad vs Fire HD tablet showdown might seem unfair at first – but both devices are consistently among Amazon's top-selling tablets for a reason. And while they're aimed at different types of users, they each offer serious value in their category. In fact, both models are flying off the shelves. The Apple iPad 11-inch (A16 chip) has shipped over 3,000 units in the past month on Amazon alone – and right now, it's down to £309.97, a full £30 cheaper than buying direct from Apple. The Amazon Fire HD 8 has also proved a huge hit, with more than 2,000 units bought in the past 30 days. At just £99.99, it's one of the most accessible tablets out there – and it was recently refreshed for 2024 with upgraded specs. For casual streaming and on-the-go use: Fire HD 8 wins on price and simplicity The Amazon Fire HD 8 tablet offers 13 hours of battery life, more RAM, and supports apps like Netflix, Kindle and Disney+. | Amazon The Fire HD 8 isn't pretending to be a powerhouse. It's designed for casual, everyday use: watching Netflix, playing Candy Crush, reading the Kindle app or making video calls via Alexa or Zoom. This latest version has a brighter 8-inch HD screen, 3GB of RAM (up from 2GB), and up to 13 hours of battery life. There's 32GB of internal storage – with support for microSD cards up to 1TB if you want to expand it cheaply. Amazon's Appstore supports most of the everyday apps you'll want (Facebook, TikTok, Spotify, etc), though you won't get official Google Play access. And if you're buying it mainly for the kids, the Fire HD tablets still support parental controls, profiles and add-ons like Amazon Kids+. You'll have to accept Amazon's 'with ads' option on the lock screen to get that £99.99 price – or pay extra for the ad-free version. For multitasking, creative work and laptop replacement: the iPad has it all The new Apple iPad 11-inch delivers powerful multitasking with stunning visuals, perfect for everything from digital art to reading and productivity. | Apple While the Fire HD is built around media and simplicity, the iPad is a fully-fledged productivity and creativity machine. The 11-inch Liquid Retina screen is pin-sharp and colour-accurate, making it ideal for sketching, editing photos, or simply enjoying ultra-HD Netflix. The A16 Bionic chip means it's lightning fast – whether you're multitasking across split-screen apps or editing video. Support for the Apple Pencil and Magic Keyboard Folio turns the iPad into an all-in-one notebook replacement, particularly for students, designers, and remote workers. And with 128GB of base storage, there's far more room to work, download, and play than on cheaper alternatives. You also get Wi-Fi 6, better cameras (12MP front and rear), USB-C charging and Apple's typical premium build. It weighs just 0.77kg and fits into any bag, making it great for travel and on-the-go productivity. Verdict: they're aimed at totally different users – but both are worth the money If all you need is a tablet for light browsing, books, videos and calls – and you'd rather save £200 – the Fire HD 8 is a top pick. It's basic but reliable, and perfect as a travel companion or gift. But if you need a device that can handle real work – writing, drawing, meetings, media creation – the new iPad is in a different league. And given it's £30 off Apple's own price right now, it's a rare chance to save on a device that rarely gets discounts. Final thoughts Both tablets are clearly striking a chord with shoppers – with thousands sold in the past month alone. Whether you're looking for an affordable Netflix companion or a sleek workhorse, the right pick depends on how you plan to use it. Retailers offering Apple iPads and Samsung Galaxy A9+ for £0
This week's tech deals see Apple iPad and Samsung Galaxy tablet drop to £0 in freebie deals - as well as £150 off Lenovo tablets Anyone who's been looking for a tablet upgrade in time for summer travel, or to simply binge series on at home, an Apple iPad may be a top contender to look at this week. Not only for its renowned quality, but a standout deal can see shoppers get one model for free. Virgin Media is still offering the 9th-generation Apple iPad for £0 to shoppers who upgrade their broadband. Anyone who locks into the £88.99 monthly cost will get the device for free. It's only available to Mega Volt package shoppers, who also receive Gig1 Fibre broadband, more than 230 TV channels, and an unlimited O2 Mobile SIM. It's a huge freebie and worth considering for those in need of a broadband upgrade. However, its long-term contract and inclusions may not be needed for others, making the free £299 iPad hard to justify. So, we've scoured rival retailers for other tablet deals. To rival Virgin Media's Apple deal is Samsung, as it hands out a freebie to Android users. Like the above broadband offer, it will require shoppers to buy another product, but it slashes the price of the Galaxy Tab A9+ to £0. Shoppers who buy the £799 Galaxy S25 at Samsung can claim a Galaxy Tab A9+ tablet (worth £299) after their purchase. Dropping the price of the tablet to £0, with proof of purchase. Those not wanting to buy a mobile for the sake of a free tablet can find the A9+ model for less at Amazon, where it's now £159.54. Free Galaxy Tab A9+ tablet at Samsung £0 Samsung Get here Product Description The 9th Gen iPad, which is £0 at Virgin Media, was originally launched in 2021 and has a 10.2-inch screen, and is still compatible with Apple's pencil and smart keyboard. The processor has a relatively good speed for streaming, at-home working and day-to-day use but it's not the newest model around. Shoppers on the lookout for this exact model can find refurbished versions at Amazon, ranging in price from £180 to £190 each. However as the 2021 model is no longer sold at Apple. The refurbished deals at Amazon are from third-party retailers called TechLike and MC-Distribution. Alternatively, Sky Mobile offers a choice of newer Apple iPads and is attractive thanks to its cost-splitting plans. The newer iPad Pro 13" M4 (2024) is priced at £34 when spreading the cost. Also on offer at Sky, for a much cheaper £10.50 per month, is Apple's newest 2025 model. The downside to Sky's deal is its lengthy 48-month contract, but the monthly rate is eye-catching for shoppers who want to split the price instead of paying Apple's £329 rate upfront. Not everyone will be in the market for a flagship Android or Apple device. If so, Currys' current Lenovo P12 discount has cut £150 off the price. Now £249.99 instead of £399, the model has a 3K screen, 12.7-inch display (so bigger than the free iPad size) and quality speakers and camera.
