KUALA LUMPUR: YSP Southeast Asia Holding Bhd (YSP SAH), one of the top pharmaceutical manufacturers on the FBM KLCI by market capitalisation, is accelerating efforts to grow its presence in both domestic and international markets.
Leveraging a combination of offline and online business strategies, the group aims to strengthen its presence in the increasingly competitive pharmaceutical sector.
Rashica Lim Yin, head of business development strategy office, e-commerce and consumer healthcare at YSP Industries (M) Sdn Bhd, said the group is committed to growth, underpinned by a strong pipeline of new products and a sustained focus on research and development (R&D).
"It's a potential business segment, but also very competitive. That's why we can't rest on our laurels. We must keep innovating and developing products that support the health and wellness of the community," Lim said at the unveiling of the company's latest innovation – the botanical beauty and wellness rituals series by GREENS – during the Greenstopia event in Kuala Lumpur last week.
YSP SAH is among the top five pharmaceutical manufacturers in Malaysia. Its operations cover the R&D, manufacturing, warehousing and logistics, and trading of pharmaceutical products ranging from prescription medications and OTC (over-the-counter) remedies to consumer healthcare products, including traditional and complementary medicines.
As part of its growth strategy, the company is sharpening its focus on exports, particularly within Asean markets, where demand for affordable quality healthcare products continues to rise in line with expanding private healthcare expenditure across the region.
Asked whether current global economic headwinds have impacted operations, Lim said it remains "business as usual" for the company, supported by steady demand for affordable medicines and ongoing product innovation.
YSP SAH continues to channel significant investment into R&D to fuel its product pipeline. The group's latest launch – the botanical beauty and wellness rituals series – is an example of this commitment.
Lim noted that development for this latest innovation took three years, with its key raw materials sourced from Japan and South Korea.
"We are very bullish about the potential of this product and the e-commerce exclusive GREENS series. Patented and clinically proven ingredients supported the product development that we use. We also did extensive market studies to validate demand and growth prospects," she added.
Greenstopia, now running in its third year, combines community recycling initiatives with health education and wellness activities. Each Greenstopia edition, including the latest Greenstopia 3.0, encourages attendees to exchange recyclable items such as plastic, aluminium, paper, e-waste and clothing for fresh produce and refreshments, fostering both environmental awareness and community bonding, in line with the GREENS branding vision of creating products that are as close to nature and eco-friendly as possible and with sustainable sources.
With a clear strategy to expand its domestic and export markets and a renewed push in health and wellness innovation, YSP SAH is positioning itself to capture new opportunities in an evolving healthcare landscape while reinforcing its standing as one of Malaysia's top pharmaceutical players.

Malaysia's economy to stay steady, ringgit-US dollar stronger at 4.100 by year-end

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's economy is expected to remain resilient in the second half of 2025 (2H25), with the ringgit strengthening to 4.100 against the US by year-end, economists said. This will be driven by domestic fundamentals, easing monetary policy, targeted reforms and softer greenback, amid persistent external headwinds, they said. Maybank Investment Bank Bhd (Maybank IB) chief economist Suhaimi Ilias said Malaysia is on track to achieve a lower budget deficit of 3.8 per cent of gross domestic product this year. This follows a better-than-expected deficit of 4.1 per cent in 2024 compared to the official target of 4.3 per cent. "The numbers so far are encouraging. Obviously, after things like the Sales and Service Tax measures effective July 1, I guess eyes are on these targeted RON95 petrol subsidy rationalisation," he said at a virtual media briefing on the 2H25 market outlook today. Maybank IB head of FX research Saktiandi Supaat said the ringgit has been one of Asean top performers so far this year, appreciating against the greeback by about 5.25 per cent year-to-date. "Our view is that the ringgit is around its fair value. We also project the US dollar-ringgit to strengthen towards 4.10 by the end of this year and move closer to 4.00 by mid-2026," said Saktiandi. The investment bank flagged several key upcoming policy milestones. They include the 13th Malaysia Plan mid-term review on July 31, launch of the National Investment Incentive Framework, unveiling of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone blueprint and 2026 Budget to be tabled on Oct 10. "Of course, we need to keep monitoring the global situation, especially with the tariff uncertainties in the US. The risk is if this escalates further, we may see more volatility in global trade flows again," Suhaimi said. "The numbers suggest the trajectory remains encouraging. The key is to keep the momentum, especially with policy support and domestic drivers in place," he added. Bank Negara Malaysia has forecast Malaysia's economy to grow between 4.5 and 5.5 per cent in 2025, from 5.1 per cent in 2024. The GDP expanded 4.4 per cent in the first quarter of 2025. On the equity market, Maybank IB retained its Bursa Malaysia benchmark FBM KLCI's year-end target at 1,660, anchored by improving forward earnings and several key investment themes. Its head of equity research Lim Sue Lin said five core themes continue to drive the bank's strategy on external disruption, domestic consumption, state-driven development, investment realisation and corporate restructuring. "As for the top stock picks, it includes Tenaga Nasional Bhd, YTL Power International Bhd, Gamuda Bhd, Public Bank Bhd, KPJ Healthcare, Farm Fresh Bhd and Solarvest Holdings Bhd, with YTL Power and Gamuda being the leading data centre plays," she said. She added that although the broader market remained range-bound due to a lack of immediate catalysts, rising activity in infrastructure, renewable energy, and data centres had strengthened the firm's conviction in those segments. Maybank IB maintained a "Neutral" stance on banks due to margin compression and slower loan growth expectations following the latest Overnight Policy Rate cut. "Still, we forecast FBM KLCI earnings to grow 2.5 per cent in 2025 and 7.7 per cent in 2026, with a rebound anticipated in the banking sector next year," Lim added. FBM KLCI slipped on Tuesday and Wednesday, erasing recent gains as global and local uncertainties cast a shadow over near-term market prospects. The slid 13.9 points to 1,511.5 on Tuesday, being weighed down by lingering uncertainty over US-Malaysia tariff negotiations, the risks of potential US export controls on AI chip shipments to Malaysia and persistent foreign outflows. On Thursday, the index ended 9.44 points or 0.62 per cent higher to 1,520.94.

Special hats to fight fruit sunburn in Pekan Nanas

A worker showing a dark patch on a pineapple that received too much sun exposure at Lim's farm, which sees many of the fruits wearing 'hats' these days to protect them during the hot months. — THOMAS YONG/The Star FRUIT farmers are adjusting their operational procedures to cope with the scorching temperatures. Pineapple farmer Haleem Lim said April to June were typically the hottest months in Malaysia, which increased the risk of fruit decay if preventive steps were not taken. 'Too much sun exposure will cause the fruits to suffer 'sunburn', meaning they get dark patches on the skin. 'Pineapple species such as MD2, Josapine and Yankee, which have thinner skin, are more vulnerable and susceptible to burns,' he told StarMetro. The 58-year-old, who has been farming pineapples for more than a decade in Pekan Nanas, Pontian in Johor, said the fruits might develop holes in the skin, giving way to mould to spread thus making them inedible. To mitigate this issue, he said the fruits were usually covered about 1.5 months before harvest to minimise risk. 'The trend of putting 'hats' on pineapples started 10 years ago when the climate became increasingly hot. 'These days, it has become part of our procedures for pineapple farmers, especially during the hot months,' he said. He added that some 20 years ago, it was still possible to leave the fruits uncovered year-long without worrying about sun damage. Lim, who also produces pineapple products such as juices, jams and cooking sauces, said an average pineapple planting cycle took about 14 months from planting to harvesting. He said some farmers had taken various steps to adapt to the hot weather, to avoid losses. Meanwhile, Federation of Malaysia Fruit Farmers Association president Koh Lai Ann said proper soil management was essential to ensure healthy fruits and minimise losses due to extreme weather. 'I am a watermelon farmer and face similar challenges. 'As we do not have control over the weather, we adapt by managing soil health using the right tools and organic fertiliser. 'Of course, this increases operating costs but we want to minimise risk – one rotten fruit may cause the fruits in the whole plot to get discarded.' Koh said changing weather patterns were also contributing to the rise in fruit-related diseases. 'With climate change increasingly affecting crop quality, adapting to the weather is necessary to ensure the fruits remain marketable and safe for consumption,' Koh added. Malaysia Meteorological Department director-general Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip had said the main cause for the current hot and humid weather was the southwest monsoon that began on May 10, with the phenomenon expected to continue until September.

SCCI, Maybank in pact to drive investments in Southeast Asia, with focus on JS-SEZ

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia is set to benefit from a landmark memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI) and Maybank Singapore Ltd. The MoU aims to enhance cross-border business collaboration and stimulate investments across Southeast Asia, with a strategic focus on Singapore, Malaysia and the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). Maybank Singapore CEO Alvin Lee Han Eng said with a dual-market advantage in Singapore and Malaysia, as one of the earliest proponents of the JS-SEZ, Maybank is committed to supporting businesses with a comprehensive suite of banking solutions, while identifying twinning opportunities for expansion into the zone. 'Beyond deepening economic cooperation between Singapore and Malaysia, Maybank also brings the strength of its presence across all 10 Asean markets to support SCCCI members in pursuing regional growth ambitions,' he said in a statement. The MoU signing was witnessed by Singapore's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Trade and Industry Gan Siow Huang. With Southeast Asia poised to become the world's fourth-largest economy by 2030 and a projected combined gross domestic product of US$4.5 trillion (RM19 trillion), the region offers significant growth opportunities, particularly in the digital and green economy sectors. In this regard, Malaysia positions itself as a key investment hub for Singaporean businesses due to its diversified economy. Against this backdrop, Singapore and Malaysia are working collaboratively to advance the JS-SEZ and other bilateral initiatives aimed at strengthening economic growth, improving connectivity, enhancing supply chain integration, and creating employment opportunities, therefore unlocking Southeast Asia's significant economic potential. Building on this momentum, SCCCI and Maybank will collaborate on initiatives aimed at promoting economic development, investment and trade, with the JS-SEZ as a strategic focal point. This will include jointly organising meetings, visits, conferences, workshops and networking events, while launching new initiatives to advance shared objectives. In addition, Maybank will provide tailored solutions including green lane financing, trade finance, cash management, and environmental, social and governance-linked products, and facilitate faster account onboarding for businesses. SCCCI members will also benefit from capacity-building programmes in areas such as sustainability, halal advisory, and financial services, supported by dedicated advisory services from Maybank's JS-SEZ Desk. The MoU is expected to benefit an estimated 5,000 SCCCI corporate members. SCCCI president Kho Choon Keng said this strategic partnership between SCCCI and Maybank strengthens its members' competitiveness for the future. 'In the face of an increasingly complex and rapidly changing business landscape, strong financial capabilities and deep regional insight are critical. 'By combining SCCCI's business network with Maybank's financial strength, we will help our members and local businesses access cross-border financing, build ESG competencies, and gain valuable market insights. Together, we will open up new economic opportunities and help our members and businesses succeed in Malaysia and across Southeast Asia,' he said. The SCCCI-Maybank Mid-Year Business Forum: Outlook 2025 held in Singapore today highlighted the momentum of this collaboration.
