MS says culture isn't a luxury in Wales its 'who we are'
Last week in the Senedd, I spoke about the incredible contribution of North Wales to our cultural landscape – whether that's the Llangollen International Eisteddfod or the North Wales International Music Festival in St Asaph or our historic heritage at Flint Castle and Greenfield Valley.
There's also the jewel in our cultural crown, Theatr Clwyd, which is nearing the end of an inspirational transformation.
Culture in Wales isn't a luxury, it's who we are.
It empowers, connects and drives our economy and it deserves to be supported not only by Welsh Government and other public bodies but also by our communities, the communities who inspire and attend performances and enjoy the wonderful cultural riches on offer in our corner of Wales.

It was also lovely recently to welcome students and teachers from Point of Ayr Federation Schools to the Senedd for a visit.
They certainly asked some fantastic questions and took the opportunity to raise a number of things they were concerned about with me – from the impact of acts of anti-social behaviour on their school and in their local area to what was happening with plans for a new skate park.
I look forward to taking these matters up as their Member of the Senedd and updating the students through their schools.
Last week was Armed Forces Week, culminating in Armed Forces Day on Saturday – a chance to pay tribute to the dedication, courage and sacrifice of those who have served and those who continue to serve in our Armed Forces.
I want to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to all those in our Armed Forces community, including veterans and reservists here in North Wales, for their continued service and commitment.
We will always remember, support and stand with you.
As this year's Pride month comes to a close, it's a chance to reflect on what has been a packed but powerful few weeks.
From the first ever Prestatyn Pride to the excellent Flintshire Schools Pride, Pride Cymru in the capital and Commonwealth events in the Senedd, Pride remains as relevant and as important as ever – a positive force for good that brings together both the LGBTQ+ community and the wider community.
It's a privilege to serve the community that shaped me here in North Wales and I'm proud to be an authentic advocate and ally for our LGBTQ+ community too.
Pride is still a protest and love will always win!
Regular readers of this column will know that the Welsh Government will be banning plastic in wet wipes next year – the legislation is set to come into force in December 2026 and is part of a wider, integrated approach to address the problems created by excess plastic and litter, banning all sorts of single-use and unnecessary plastics in products we all use regularly, something which I kick-started when I was Minister for Environment back in 2016.
So it was heartening this week to hear that Nice-Pak in Flint, one of our biggest local employers and one which does a lot of work locally for our communities, is ready for the transition ahead of the legislation by ensuring that 96% of the wipes it manufactures for the UK market are already plastic-free.
This is great news for the company and for the environment – well done to the team at Nice-Pak!
Finally, a reminder that Mold Carnival is back this Sunday, July 6 – a brilliant local event that brings the whole community together at the Rec and Kendricks Field (Maes Bodlonfa Fields).
The day kicks off with a colourful parade at 10:30am from Griffiths Square car park and runs until 6pm with everything from hands-on science fun and special character appearances to live music, dance acts and family entertainment throughout the day.
Plus, there'll be free football activities thanks to the FAW and McDonald's as well as Transformer robots! If you're free, do pop down and support this fantastic local day out.
It's a great celebration of everything that makes Mold such a special place to live.

The short scene showed George coming out from the back of the shop soaking wet in a white shirt as he was helping Jenny sort the plumbing. While chomping on a sweet Jenny joked that he "looked like that Mr Darcy from Pride & Prejudice," referring to the iconic scene in the vintage BBC series that saw Colin Firth play the character and emerge in a soaked shirt after taking an impromptu dip in the lake. Jenny then continued to flirt with George as she saw the cheeky innuendos in the plumbing terms he was describing to her. As he left the small shop, Jenny flirted with again asking to see him later, but a clueless George failed to catch on. Aside from enjoying the hilarious scene, many Corrie viewers were excited The Kabin's comeback. "Omg Kabin set in use guys first time seen this year !!!!,???" wrote one fan on X, formerly Twitter. "It's been a lifetime, but welcome back to The Kabin. We missed you," another added. A third posted: "A scene in the Kabin !!! I say a scene in the Kabin!!!" And a fourth commented: "The returns of Ken Barlow and The Kabin in tonight's #Corrie. What a time to be alive!" The Kabin is a newsagents first made an appearance in 1973 before moving to its current location sits across from the corner shop on the cobbles in 1990. Morticia and Wednesday have a strained relationship in the show, but Catherine says that she and real-life daughter Carys share a close bond. The actress reveals Morticia's parenting style involves 'nurturing and then having discipline'. Carys has experienced a small dose of her parenting style. Catherine said: 'I did give her side-eye the other day. I rolled my eyes, and she went, 'Don't Morticia me, Mom'. I thought it was a wonderful new line that kids can say to their mothers, 'Don't Morticia me'.' In addition to her happy off-screen marriage, Catherine said she is lucky to have a great on-screen hubby in Luis. 'When I met her, she was humble, gracious, creative, collaborative and a woman who is just, you know, it exudes from her — greatness. She doesn't know it. 'She's a wonderful artist. And I get to say now, 'I met Lady Gaga'.' Not to mention Gaga can say she met Catherine Zeta-Jones . . .

Tebbutt shared a clip of him trying dishes from Waroeng Nona, an Indonesian street food pop-up found at the back of Queen's Arcade on Working Street. In the video, posted to the his TikTok account, the chef is wowed by the "delicious" flavours of the food served up. Tasting Mama Jane's Beef Rendang, he says, "It's just rich, developed and loved" in his latest praise for Cardiff's food scene. And if there is anyone who thinks food joint Waroeng Nona might not be for them, Tebbutt says to "think again". Encouraging everyone to try the pop-up, the chef says: "I've already tried it and it's delicious. Long slow cooking. Lots of different layers of spices. There's cinnamon in there. "It's not overpowering. If you think the food is going to be too fiery and too fierce for you, think again. It's just rich and developed and loved. "That is absolutely delicious." Content cannot be displayed without consent Waroeng Nona is run by Nona, who moved from Indonesia to Cardiff in 2012 and worked as a chef in restaurants across the city. During the pandemic, Waroeng Nona was born as a food delivery business and has since run a number of street food pop-ups, including at Sticky Fingers. It is described as a "home for authentic Indonesian flavours." In the caption of the video, Tebbutt wrote: "You have to try this delicious Indonesian food in Cardiff." As some Saturday Kitchen fans will know, the 51-year-old presenter has a special connection to Wales. Tebbutt was born in High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire, but actually grew up in south Wales. Moving to Wales when he was just six months' old, Tebbutt attended Rougemont School, an independent co-educational day school near Newport, whose other alumni include former Welsh rugby player Richard Parks. The chef now lives in Monmouthshire. Speaking to Great British Food Awards in 2016, Tebbutt said he considered himself an "honorary Welshman" and that he considered his two children to be Welsh. "It's my adopted country and a beautiful place to live," he said at the time. "The produce is brilliant, but people have been bad at spreading the word.
