Event will promote military skills to employers

An event demonstrating the value of military skills in the workplace is to be held as part of Armed Forces Week. Mission Business will offer presentations and talks to companies and organisations from across Lincolnshire, encouraging them to hire veterans. The event will be held at the Officer's Mess at the Prince William of Gloucester Barracks in Grantham on 25 June. Bridget Ley, South Kesteven District Council's armed forces champion, said it would be a "golden opportunity" to combine support for businesses and ex-military personnel across the county. The event is being run by the district council, the Ministry of Defence and the Business Unfinished consultancy. The council, which holds a gold award under the MoD's defence employer recognition scheme, employs former military personnel as bin collectors and in grounds maintenance. At the event, veterans who run their own businesses will be sharing their journeys from deployment to employment. Serving members of the military will be at the event, giving talks about how their skills can benefit organisations when they end their service. Those attending will hear how hiring military reservists can unlock training benefits worth up to £10,000 for employers. The Greater Lincolnshire Defence and Security Cluster (GLRDSC) will explain how businesses can access defence budgets so they can secure defence contracts. Julian Free served in the Army for 30 years before joining the University of Lincoln, where he is now deputy vice chancellor (regional engagement) and chair of the GLRDSC. Mr Free, who finished his service at the rank of major general, described members of the forces as "technical, skilled people" with a "good work ethic". He added that they were "quite a rich source of well-qualified people to take into businesses". Veterans attend job fair to plan new careers

More than 1,000 Armed Forces personnel, 200 charities and other organisations have gathered for a major employment fair at a race track. The third annual National Transition Event at Silverstone Circuit in Northamptonshire aimed to connect veterans and cadets with employers and support services. Veterans can also go on a track tour in a variety of supercars. Event organiser Jonny Ball said the job fair was an "alien environment" for many veterans. "They're not used to talking about themselves, they're used to talking themselves as a team," said Mr Ball, who is a veteran himself. "The magic of the National Transition Event is that you'll find veterans wearing a different uniform behind their stand... they've been through that process themselves and that makes the process far easier." According to a 2022 survey by the Office of National Statistics, fewer than half of veterans (43.2%) feel prepared for civilian life after service, while more than a third (34.7%) report feeling unprepared. Mr Ball helped create the event to aid veterans understand the civilian job market and connect them with organisations offering support. Darren Wright, founder of the charity Veterans into Logistics, said: "Last year we supported over 270 veterans and got them into employment. "We retrain them, we upskill them, we get them an HGV licence and we get them into employment. "We save people's lives, and I'm proud to be here." Chris Elliott, an ambassador for PTSD Resolution, which has helped more than 4,000 veterans, said he struggled with depression for a long time. "I've been a beneficiary of the charity, and it's completely turned my life around." Follow Northamptonshire news on BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram and X.
