China arrests 30 female writers over gay erotic fiction

Telegraph30-06-2025
China has arrested at least 30 writers – almost all of whom are women in their 20s – since February, as it clamps down on the publication of gay erotic fiction.
Under China's strict pornography laws, writers who are found guilty of 'producing and distributing obscene materials' and have earned money for their work, could face more than 10 years in prison.
One of the women targeted, who goes by the name Pingping Anan Yongfu, recounted the experience of her arrest on social media, despite being ' warned not to talk about it '.
'I'll never forget it – being escorted to the car in full view, enduring the humiliation of stripping naked for examination in front of strangers, putting on a vest for photos, sitting in the chair, shaking with fear, my heart pounding,' she wrote online.
After her post went viral, she deleted it and wrote another one acknowledging that she had broken the law before deleting her account entirely.
She is part of a group of women known for writing 'danmei', a type of erotic fiction that emerged in the 1990s and often involves a BDSM relationship between two male characters.
Inspired by Japanese boys' love for manga, and increasingly popular in China, the genre is normally hosted online and tends to be targeted at women.
The stories are known to be subversive and go against what is often seen as normal or right. For example, in 'danmei' stories, male characters are often portrayed as vulnerable and are able to become pregnant.
The genre has become increasingly popular over the years, with 60 'danmei' stories optioned for film and TV in 2021, with the most expensive sold for over £4 million.
The female 'danmei' writers who have been arrested so far this year had published their work on Haitang Literature City, a website known for hosting the genre.
Late last year, another 50 writers who had published their work on the site were also prosecuted.
China's pornography law specifically prohibits 'explicit descriptions of gay sex or other sexual perversions ' and gay erotica writers tend to be targeted more than those who write heterosexual erotica.
While homosexuality was decriminalised in China in 1997 and removed from a list of psychiatric disorders in 2001, gay marriage has yet to be legalised and same-sex couples cannot adopt children.
The government has also previously cracked down on LGBT rights groups and there have been reports of young transgender people being sent to 're-education' camps, as the government pushes forward traditional family values.
One 'danmei' writer who shared her experience on social media said that she was pulled out of her college class by police officers who then proceeded to search her dorm room.
Another said: 'I'm only 20. So young, and I've already ruined my life so early.'

Brit tourist beaten by mob ‘after hitting woman with motorbike while pulling wheelie' faces 10yrs in jail as victim dies

A BRIT tourist faces up to 10 years behind bars after reportedly killing a woman while attempting a wheelie on his motorbike. Brandon Mills, 22, from Doncaster, allegedly slammed into Jurairat Petchraksa, 49, outside a bar in Pattaya, Thailand before being beaten up by an angry mob. 7 7 7 7 The 22-year-old initially faced charges of reckless driving causing serious injury, which is punishable with up to three years in jail or a fine of up to 60,000 baht (roughly £1,365) - or both. But following Jurairat's death, he could face up to 10 years behind bars and a fine of up to 200,000 baht (around £4,550). Cops said the suspect was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs but did admit to causing the accident and has since compensated Jurairat's family with 30,000 baht (roughly £680) for medical expenses. Mills has since been released from custody but his passport has been seized to prevent him from leaving the country. Police Lieutenant Colonel Itthiporn said: "More evidence and witness statements are now needed for this case. "The suspect was not under the influence of alcohol or any kind of drugs but he admitted causing the accident. "We are waiting for a full forensic report from the hospital into the injuries and the cause of death. The suspect will not be allowed to leave Thailand." The Brit reportedly lost control and crashed into the Petchraska's pink Honda bike while attempting to lift the front wheel of his rented scooter. Emergency services found the mum-of-two lying in a pool of blood at around 11 pm local time on August 14 in the Soi Bong Koch 8 area of the city. She was rushed to hospital, where she was treated for life-threatening injuries. Horror moment Brit is dragged out of holiday bar and beaten by staff for refusing to pay eye-watering £460 drinks bill But despite medics' best efforts, she tragically died on Sunday afternoon. Confirming the woman's death today, a rescue officer said: "Yes, she has passed away at the hospital. We only transported her there." Officers said the Brit, believed to be involved in the crash, gave his name as Brandon James Holmes. But local news reports into previous criminal cases in the UK suggest he is actually called Brandon Mills. According to reports, Mills was convicted of dealing heroin and crack cocaine in Sheffield in 2022 and received a suspended 14 month sentence in a Young Offender Institution. Emotional tributes have since poured in for the mum who was "everyone's angel". One said: "Jurairat was like a mother to me. She was everyone's friend. I can only pray that she is in heaven now and not suffering. "I hope that there will be justice for what happened to her. She did not harm anyone, there was no reason for her to die like that. She was everyone's angel." 7 7

Did you solve it? Are you a matcha for these tasty Japanese puzzles?

Earlier today I set you three puzzles from Tasty Japanese Morsels in Recreational Mathematics. Here they are again with solutions. 1. Squid game Two octopuses will face off in a boxing match. Each octopus requires eight gloves. (There is no distinction between left and right gloves.) The rules of octopus boxing stipulate that an octopus must only wear gloves of the same colour. There is a bag containing 16 red gloves and 16 green gloves. Find the minimum number of gloves that must be drawn at random from the bag to guarantee that the colours of the gloves of the two octopuses are (a) the same. (b) different. (c) either the same or different. Solution (a) 31 (b) 24 (c) 23 (a) If the lone glove left behind is red, both octopuses can wear green gloves. If the lone glove left behind is green, both octopuses can wear red gloves. (b) Imagine the first 16 choices are all of one colour. You will then need 8 of the other. (c) With 23 gloves, at least 7 are one colour (say red) and at least 8 are the other (say green). If there there exactly 7 red, then both octopuses can wear green. If there are more than 7 red, one can wear red and the other green. (Likewise, if at least 7 are green, and at least 8 are red, we get the same result.) 2. Sum-o wrestling. The diagram below represents a multiplication in which all but two of the digits have been replaced by stars. Reconstruct the computation. Solution Replace the stars with letters A to J. H must be 1 since F plus the carry of (D+G) must be 10 or larger. In fact, since the carry of D+E can at most be 1, it must be the case that H = 1, I = 0, and F = 9. We also know thanks to the given 1, that D + G = 11. Also, note that E = J Now to the multiplications. We know that 2 × AB = FG = ninety-somthing. So A = 4. And since C x AB = DE, we can deduce that C is 1 or 2. (If it was 3 or larger C x AB would have threedigits.) Suppose C = 1. Then AB = DE, which means that D = A = 4. However, we know G must be even, since G = 2 x B, so D + G is even, but this contradicts D + G = 11. Hence C = 2 and D = F = 9. It follows that J = E = G = 2 and B = 6. 3. Another boxing puzzle A restaurant uses 4 × 4 and 5 × 5 Bento boxes each divided into exactly eight square sections, as shown in the diagram below. The chef has asked you to create Bento boxes with rectangular boxes. Each Bento must still have eight square sections, even though, as in the example, the square sections do not have to be all of the same size. Design a 4 × 6 Bento box, a 3 × 9 Bento box, and a 5 × 6 Bento box. Solution Here's the 4 x 6 and the 3 x 9 And here's the 5 x 6 I hope you enjoyed these puzzles. I'll be back in two weeks. Arigato! Tasty Japanese Morsels in Recreational Mathematics is published by the American Mathematical Association. All the diagrams above are taken from the book. I've been setting a puzzle here on alternate Mondays since 2015. I'm always on the look-out for great puzzles. If you would like to suggest one, email me.

Horrifying moment tourist suffers severe injury after flaming jumping rope ‘barbeques' her neck

A shocking video shows the moment a woman was left with severe burns after a flaming skipping rope got wrapped around her neck at a full moon party. Karen Liseth, 22, went on a three-month trip to Thailand, and planned to go on to Bali, when she attended a celebration at a beach on the second week of the vacation. After a few drinks, she decided to 'do something crazy' - and asked her partner, Abed, now 29, to film her skipping with a flaming jump rope. Karen Liseth, 22, was left with severe burns after a flaming skipping rope got wrapped around her neck at a full moon party Everything was going to plan - until she tried to duck back out of the rope and it wrapped around her neck. Onlookers gasped in shock as the rope 'barbecued her' - leaving her with a sore and blackened neck. The business developer, from London, England, said she 'counts her blessings' the injury wasn't worse, because the rope could have hit her eyes or set her hair on fire. Karen said: 'I'd had a few drinks at the party and thought, "Why not do something crazy?" 'But then I completely miscalculated how to leave, and ran the other way - with the rope wrapping around my neck. 'I think I just felt adrenaline in the moment and laughed it off. I even had a few shots to help with the pain after!' Karen and her partner were visiting the Thai island of Ko Pha Ngan when they attended the party. She decided to be daring and skip with the rope - and asked Abed to film it. Karen added: 'I was in shock with the adrenaline at the time. 'After, my partner sat me down to check I was okay - that was when I realized it was painful and I started to cry.' The couple were stuck on the island until the morning - and Karen, then 18, said she woke up in pain. But due to how remote the area was, they crossed their fingers it would heal by itself and continued their trip. Karen said: 'I woke up and I couldn't really move my neck. 'I called my mom and told her what happened - she was like: "What the f***, Karen?" She was so concerned. 'It was a pain to shower and even to have my hair sat on my neck - I had to have my hair up for a few days because of the stinging. 'But I did carry on going in the sea and showering. 'It scabbed over, then the scabs came off a few times - after about two weeks it had healed.' Now fully healed, it has hardly even scarred - and there is virtually no evidence of the injury. Karen said she struggled to watch the video in the weeks after the injury in June 2022, but now can watch it with ease. She added: 'It was a horror, but it didn't ruin the vacation. That video describes my crazy personality really - it's a cool story to tell. 'This is a perfect example of what not to do when you've had a few drinks - I don't drink like that any more! 'But I was young - you do silly things.'
