How Patrice Bergeron influenced Tage Thompson's unlikely path to NHL stardom
As a child, Tage Thompson was determined to become a goaltender. That dream changed during the 2004–05 NHL lockout while his father Brent was playing in Providence, Rhode Island.
With Patrice Bergeron also spending time there, Brent encouraged him to take shots against young Tage in casual street sessions.

Patrice Bergeron's influence during the lockout
The outcome was one-sided. Bergeron's skill as a shooter made it clear to Thompson that goaltending would not be his future. Though discouraging in the moment, this experience ultimately set him on a different course, and abandoning the idea of playing in net. Thompson shifted his focus to developing as a forward.
And an adjustment that became the foundation of his professional career.
Meeting Patrice Bergeron years later in the NHL
Years later, when Thompson reached the NHL, he found himself competing directly against Bergeron. Facing a player who unknowingly altered his hockey path was a full-circle moment. Instead of being defined by that early setback. Thompson stood across the ice as a peer and a proven goal scorer in his own right.
The meeting was more than just symbolic, as it gave Thompson an appreciation for the impact Bergeron had on him, not only as a player.

Carrying the lesson into Patrice Bergeron's own career
Thompson's respect for Bergeron grew as he experienced firsthand. This is how the Bruins captain treated opponents and fellow players, Bergeron's kindness and professionalism left a lasting impression. This is showing Thompson that character could be just as meaningful as talent in shaping a legacy.
As Thompson's own career developed in Buffalo, he embraced those lessons, beyond his offensive success.
He began striving to represent himself in the same respectful and grounded way, Bergeron's influence extended far beyond that childhood street game. It provided a model for leadership that Thompson aims to bring into his own career.
Today, Thompson is recognized as one of the NHL's top scoring forwards. But he credits an unlikely source for setting him on that trajectory, Patrice Bergeron's talent may have crushed his early dream. But his professionalism inspired the mindset that continues to guide Thompson's career.

‘Go down, Joe, it's August': Bengals sit Burrow after preseason scare
(Image via Getty) Things aren't settling down in Cincinnati. The Bengals will be without starting left guard Cordell Volson for the season and are now choosing to rest Joe Burrow after a preseason stretch that raised eyebrows across the league. Burrow, who was sacked three times in Monday's game against the Washington Commanders, won't suit up against the Indianapolis Colts on Saturday. Head coach Zac Taylor confirmed his decision after criticism mounted over the risks of playing the team's $275 million quarterback in August. Joe Burrow won't play after controversial preseason decision Burrow played two series against the Philadelphia Eagles on Aug. 7 before taking three drives against Washington earlier this week. On one play, instead of sliding, he attempted to extend a scramble and was swallowed by three defenders. 'Go down, Joe, it's August,' ESPN's Joe Buck said on the broadcast. Taylor acknowledged the hit but defended his approach. 'It's one of those things for him, that's what preseason football's for. Do I love seeing that? No, I don't. But, at the same time, he's out there learning what he can and can't do and we've seen him get out of that stuff before.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Bojong Menteng: Unsold Sofas Prices May Surprise You (Prices May Surprise You) Sofas | Search Ads Search Now Undo Burrow has already led four touchdowns in five preseason drives, but Taylor made it clear: 'I'm not anticipating any starters playing.' The Bengals will keep their quarterback on the sideline until Week 1 at Cleveland on Sept. 7. Cordell Volson's season-ending injury leaves Bengals scrambling The loss of Volson adds another blow to Cincinnati's shaky protection. ESPN's Ben Baby first reported that the guard will undergo season-ending surgery on his right shoulder after being hurt at practice Aug. 15. Volson has started 48 games since being drafted in 2022, but his 2024 season metrics told a story of inconsistency. According to Pro Football Focus, he allowed six of Burrow's 48 sacks, committed eight penalties, and ranked 97th in pass-blocking grade. His lone strength was run blocking, where he graded No. 53. Taylor called the injury 'a tough one for him' and admitted surgery was likely. Cincinnati has already brought in Dalton Risner for a visit. In 537 snaps last season, Risner didn't allow a sack or draw a penalty. He was ranked No. 13 among guards in pass blocking with a 76.2 grade, a major upgrade over Volson. With right guard Lucas Patrick and Cody Ford also listed as questionable, the Bengals are thin at the position heading into the season opener. Can Cincinnati keep Joe Burrow upright in 2025? This season is pivotal for the Bengals. They've missed the postseason in back-to-back years after making a Super Bowl run in 2021 and reaching the AFC Championship in 2022. Despite having Burrow, Ja'Marr Chase, and Tee Higgins, defensive lapses and line issues have derailed them. ESPN analyst Ryan Clark recently said the team is 'absolutely' wasting Burrow's prime years. With Volson out, Hendrickson still holding out, and minimal offseason upgrades, Cincinnati enters 2025 in another precarious spot. Taylor insists the team is ready. 'I feel good about where our team's at right now,' he said. 'I'm excited to get through the preseason and go play games because I see what I see in practice.' The Bengals open the regular season at Cleveland on Sept. 7. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!

NHL trade rumor: Jordan Kyrou speculation quiets, Penguins eye leverage with draft picks
Jordan Kyrou trade talks escalate (Credit: Imagn Images) Jordan Kyrou was one of the big names linked to trade rumors following the St. Louis Blues' first-round playoff exit. Despite being under contract through 2031, questions surfaced about whether the winger still fit into the Blues' long-term vision. The Montreal Canadiens were at the center of much of that speculation, seen by many as a potential destination. Top 15 Jordan Kyrou Plays from 2021-22 | NHL The Canadiens' decision changed speculation quickly Montreal shifted focus on July 1, acquiring Zack Bolduc instead. That move essentially ended any serious conversation about Kyrou joining the Canadiens. The timing was significant, as it coincided with the start of Kyrou's full no-trade clause. With Montreal going in another direction and Kyrou controlling his future, the strongest link in the rumor mill quickly disappeared. Jeremy Rutherford of The Athletic recently reported that he has not heard any meaningful activity involving Kyrou since, suggesting that St. Louis has not been actively shopping the winger. While the chatter hasn't vanished completely, it has cooled considerably. Teams continue to monitor Jordan Kyrou closely Even though the trade speculation has slowed, rival clubs are still keeping a close eye on Kyrou. The 27-year-old has three straight 30-goal seasons under his belt and is widely regarded as one of the league's fastest forwards. That combination of speed and consistent production makes him an attractive asset for any team looking to add offense. What complicates the picture is Kyrou's no-trade clause, which gives him full control over where he goes. For the Blues, that reduces flexibility in any potential discussions. For interested clubs, it means their chances hinge not only on St. Louis' willingness to move him but also on Kyrou's approval. As of now, there's no sign he's looking to leave. Jordan Kyrou 2024-25 Goals Including Playoffs (39) Which teams could explore offer sheets While the Blues manage their situation quietly, the Pittsburgh Penguins are in a more active position of power. General manager Kyle Dubas confirmed on the Cam & Strick podcast that teams have reached out about reacquiring their 2026 draft picks, which the Penguins currently hold. That matters because unsigned restricted free agents like Anaheim's Mason McTavish and Minnesota's Marco Rossi remain potential targets for offer sheets. Dubas hinted he's willing to listen but only at a fair price. That puts the Penguins in a strong negotiating spot as the offseason moves forward.
