Notting Hill Carnival issues major route changes ahead of bank holiday celebrations
One of the world's biggest street parties, Notting Hill Carnival is quickly approaching, attracting more than two million revellers to the streets of West London for the August Bank Holiday. The carnival is a celebration of community, unity, Caribbean culture and history but this year comes with big changes.
From giant digital screens and new support crews to subtle route tweaks, Notting Hill Carnival organisers have taken to Instagram to show they introduced fresh measures to keep the two-day party safe, smooth, and unforgettable. Here's everything you need to know before you hit the road. It comes as The Mirror's Darren Lewis advised people not to let let killjoys stop Notting Hill Carnival after cops called it a 'war zone'.
Route changes and stewards
Many carnival goers are used to sticking to the same route or even following a float, but this year the organisers are introducing new routes and might even send you on a detour - but don't stress, it's all in good faith. Stewards will be guiding the crowds along alternative paths to ensure everything moves safely and comfortably, and while many don't like change - you may discover a hidden gem along the way.
Digital screens with updates
For the first time in Notting Hill history, stationary digital screens will be dotted along the route sharing safety tips, key updates and announcements ensuring everyone is in the loop and well informed while they celebrate.

New teams on the ground
Extra support crews will be stationed across the streets to answer questions, give directions, and help keep the event stress-free for everyone involved.
Moment of reflection
At 3pm on both main days, Carnival will pause for a 72-second silence in memory of the 72 lives lost in the Grenfell Tower fire. The moment will also honour Takayo Nembhard and Cher Maximen, who were tragically killed at Carnival, as well as Kelso Cochrane, whose racially motivated murder in 1959 was the drive for the event and the pioneers who built its foundation.
From the children parade, to the steel bands competition each carnival day is set will bring something different continuing the long standing Caribbean celebration. But beyond the new announcements, we've put together the official carnival schedule to ensure you don't a single part.
Weekend Schedule
Saturday 23 August - Panorama
Emslie Horniman's Pleasance Park, W10 3DH, 16:00–23:00
Carnival celebrations kick off on Saturday with the UK National Panorama Steel Band Competition - now including a junior category for the first time. Expect ten-minute steel band performances, Caribbean food, and sunset vibes. Tickets from £7.55.
Sunday 24 August 2025 - Family Day
J'Ouvert - 06:00–09:00 (starting at Sainsbury's, Canal Way roundabout)
The opening celebration where participants cover each other in paint, powder and chocolate, soundtracked by steel bands and the pulse of soca. It's raw, unfiltered, and deeply rooted in Caribbean tradition.
Official Opening Ceremony - 10:00–10:30
Traditionally led by local residents, organisers, and friends of Carnival, this year's ceremony will open the judging zone grandstand to the public for the first time, giving everyone a front-row seat to see the bands up close.
Children's Day Parade Route
Sunday is all about family. Expect the next generation to carry the Carnival baton, dancing in the streets in handcrafted costumes.
Dutty Mas Parade Route
A messier take on J'Ouvert for those who don't mind being splashed with paint, powder, or even melted chocolate.
Mas Bands - All Day
Mas bands will keep the road alive from start to finish, winding through the route with floats, dancers, and costumes that have been in the making all year. You can catch them at different points throughout the day.
Sound Systems - 12:00–19:00
Perfect if you'd rather stay in one place. While sound systems are deeply rooted in Jamaica's reggae culture, these sound systems will be offering every genre imaginable.
Live Stages - 12:00 -19:00
Emslie Horniman's Pleasance Park, W10 5DH
Powis Square Stage – Produced by Alvaro Barrington, W11 2AY
Monday 25 August 2025 - Adults' Parade
Adult's Parade from 09:30
The most intense day of Carnival, where Mas bands reveal the costumes they've been preparing all year. Whether you're in a band, wearing your own design, or just joining the crowd, follow the music, find a horn, and dance as the floats pass by.
Mas Bands - All Day
Just like Sunday, Mas bands will be moving throughout the day, so you can spot them at various points along the route.
Sound Systems & Live Stages - 12:00–19:00
Keep the vibe going with music across genres at sound system spots and live stages at Emslie Horniman's Pleasance Park, W10 5DH & Powis Square Stage – Produced by Alvaro Barrington, W11 2AY

Narinder Kaur criticises BBC's decision to have Thomas Skinner on Strictly
It comes after Skinner met US vice president JD Vance for a barbecue and drinks, with the 34-year-old – who befriended US President Donald Trump's number two on social media platform X – describing the event as 'once in a lifetime'. In the caption of a video posted to X, Jeremy Vine panellist and former Big Brother star Kaur, 52, said: 'Apparently I was deemed too controversial for @bbcstrictly because they only hire quiet brown and black women that fit in a box. 'But you can be a white man AND be controversial and you'll be hired on the spot! Hello Thomas Skinner!!' In a statement, she added: 'There's only so much you can say in a short video, but I felt something many others have been feeling all day and that was complete shock and utter bewilderment – to see Thomas be announced in the line-up, considering all the rhetoric about how people with right-wing opinions are cancelled and not allowed on the BBC. 'I've debated Tom on Good Morning Britain before, I supported his book release at his launch party, there is a huge disparity in what certain demographics of people are allowed to say and still get one show after another. 'I met the Strictly team at the TV Choice Awards earlier this year and got talking to one of the bookers about the show generally – and she said 'You're a bit too controversial and we can't have that for the show.'' Social media personality Skinner has been announced as one of the latest celebrities to be taking part in the upcoming series of BBC One show Strictly. A post shared by BBC Strictly (@bbcstrictly) He recently claimed he had received 'death threats' and 'vile comments about my children', following a series of social media posts claiming 'something's gone wrong' in the UK, and saying 'there is nothing wrong with being proud of where you're from'. In other posts, which drew criticism from some of his followers, Skinner said it is 'not far-right' to be 'flying your flag and loving your country', and he complained 'it ain't safe out there anymore' in London, saying the city is 'hostile' and 'tense'. Following the post complaining about alleged abuse, Mr Vance replied with a picture of a cartoon character typing on a keyboard and a message that read: 'Hang in there, my friend. Remember that 90 percent of people attacking your family look like this.' After the Strictly announcement, Skinner said in a social media post: 'They say don't read the comments on social media. But I couldn't help myself. I've had absolute pellets all day on my Instagram lost about going on Strictly… Why are some people so angry that don't even know me.' They say don't read the comments on social media. But I couldn't help myself. I've had absolute pellets all day on my instagram lost about going on strictly. Have a look at some of these on Instagram …. Why are some people so angry that don't even know me… — Thomas Skinner ⚒ (@iamtomskinner) August 14, 2025 Among the other celebrity contestants confirmed for Strictly this year are former Geordie Shore star Vicky Pattison and Neighbours actor Stefan Dennis. They join the likes of podcast host and YouTube star George Clarke, RuPaul's Drag Race UK finalist La Voix, former England rugby player Chris Robshaw, and model and CBBC actress Ellie Goldstein, who is to become the first contestant with Down's syndrome to take part in Strictly's full series. The line-up is completed by Love Island winner Dani Dyer-Bowen, EastEnders actress Balvinder Sopal, Gladiators star Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, Doctor Who actress Alex Kingston, and former footballer Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. Strictly, hosted by Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly, will return to BBC One and BBC iPlayer in September, with Craig Revel Horwood, Motsi Mabuse, Anton Du Beke and Shirley Ballas as judges. The BBC has been approached for comment.
