Dollar eyes weekly rise into US-China trade talks
The dollar headed for a weekly gain on most major peers on Friday as a U.S.-UK trade deal raised hopes of progress in looming U.S.-China talks, while bets of imminent U.S. rate cuts receded after the Federal Reserve indicated it was in no hurry.
Financial Markets are heading into the weekend with the focus squarely on
trade negotiations
from Washington and Beijing due to begin on Saturday in Switzerland.
The euro was steady in the Asia morning and down 0.6% for the week at $1.1217. The yen has weakened about 0.7% this week and hit a one-month trough of 146.18 per dollar, before steadying around 145.78.
Sterling, which had rallied on news reports of an impending U.S.-UK trade deal, gave back gains when the agreement turned out to be pretty limited and struck a three-week low of $1.3220 in early trade on Friday.
The "general terms" agreement modestly expands agricultural access for both countries and lowers prohibitive U.S. duties on British car exports, but leaves in place the 10% baseline.

"The market reaction of buying USD may reflect greater optimism that such tariff deals are doable," said Steve Englander, global head of G10 currency research at Standard Chartered, in a note to clients.
"Trump's dangling of the prospect of a trade detente with China may be adding to optimism that the global disruption from trade wars may not be as severe as markets have feared," he said.
"For the time being, G10 markets would be relieved if U.S. and China bilateral tariffs were rolled back, even if they remain well above January 19 levels."
Bitcoin has surged back above $100,000, reflecting a refreshed appetite for risk-taking in markets' more speculative corners.
Announcing the UK deal, Trump said he expects substantive negotiations between the U.S. and China this weekend and that tariffs on Beijing of 145% would likely come down.
The administration is weighing a plan to slash the tariff on Chinese imports by more than half, the New York Post reported, citing unidentified sources, though the White House dismissed that as speculation.
The Australian dollar headed for its first weekly drop in a month, with a 0.7% fall to $0.6391. The New Zealand dollar was likewise lower at $0.5892.
On the central bank front this week moves were as expected with the Bank of England cutting, while Sweden, Norway and the United States left rates on hold.
However Fed Chair Jerome Powell's remarks, emphasising the level of uncertainty, were taken as reducing the likelihood the Fed lowers rates any time soon and market pricing for a cut in June has drifted to about 17% from about 55% a week ago.
In contrast with G10 peers the dollar was lower on several
Asian currencies
this week after a shock surge in the Taiwan dollar.
After a volatile few days it has settled around 30 to the dollar, a bit more than 6% stronger than where it had finished April. The Singapore dollar is not far from decade highs. The Hong Kong dollar has retreated from the strong side of its band after heavy intervention from the

Remove Ads Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads In this edition of ETMarkets Smart Talk, Manish Jain, Chief Strategy Officer & Director at Mirae Asset Capital Markets, shares his insights on the emerging megatrends that are set to reshape India's investment landscape over the next artificial intelligence and semiconductors to defense and renewables, Jain believes these sectors hold the key to long-term wealth creation He also delves into the current market volatility, the evolving IPO landscape, and why India is poised for a multi-year growth story driven by innovation, digital transformation, and strategic modernization. Edited Excerpt -A) Last week, during our Invest India Global Conference in Mumbai, I mentioned that tariff war-related fears will not be the main driver of volatility going forward. On tariffs, the world is now tuned for sudden news and adjustments thereof.A 10% tariff tax is universal to other countries as well. The impact of the tariff war on India's GDP is limited. The impact on markets is more sentimental and consensus GDP is projected to grow at around 6.5%, which is expected to be better than last year's print of 6.3%. Bilaterally, India is at an advanced stage of discussion with the US and the UK. India is also negotiating with the EU and New seem to have bottomed out. Now, any earnings shock could be a factor for volatility. Geopolitics has become very complex. This could drive volatility. COVID could be another reason for increased volatility going forward.A) Gold is part of the portfolio. I have increased the allocation. Cash levels vary, but I try to keep cash at around 10% to take advantage of any opportunities that volatility may stocks and ETFs (including Bitcoin ETF) are part of the portfolio. I'm also evaluating UAE markets to see if they present good yields on bonds and REITs.A) For 478 companies in the Nifty 500, Revenue/EBITDA/PAT grew by 6%/11%/12% YoY. Ex-financials, growth was 6%/9%/15% YoY. EBITDA/PAT margins improved by 120/60 bps to 23.8%/10.5%.The highest earnings growth was observed in Metals, PSU Banks , Healthcare, Telecom, Internet Services, Chemicals, Transportation, and Capital Goods . Earnings were dragged by Oil & Gas (ex-OMCs), Private Banks, and Infrastructure A) It's difficult to talk about specific names. Any business with a cash-generating ability would be on the radar. Sustainable EPS growth and growing market share would be the criteria for selecting IPO companies from the lot.A) On a selective basis, I see it as a long-term opportunity. Sometimes, we have seen mainboard activity reduce, but SME IPOs have still gone have more bankers coming in to place SME IPOs, and this is a space that has grown tremendously, even though there is less liquidity and a much higher application a good issue, even for a smaller fund raise, there is enough and more liquidity to fill these IPOs.A) A lot is happening in India in the next 5–7 years. So many things are doubling, including GDP.I would keep an eye on 4–5 sectors:– India's AI market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 25–35%. It's expected to raise India's annual growth rate by 1.3% and add a trillion dollars to the economy in the next 10 defense budget is USD 75 billion, ranked 4th highest globally. We have a target of USD 6 billion in exports and USD 35 billion in production in the next 5 years. Digital Economy – In the next 5 years, India's DE is projected to contribute nearly one-fifth or 20% of the country's overall economy. DE industries have grown at 17% vs the economy's 12% growth rate—outpacing traditional and chips—not from potatoes but from silicon. The semiconductor market is expected to double to USD 100 billion in the next 5 is targeting 500–600 GW of RE in the next 5–7 years. Green hydrogen is something to keep an eye on. India is targeting 5 million tonnes per year in the next 5 years.A) In the recent conflict between India and Pakistan, assets and weapons used by the armed forces were mostly made indigenously with limited foreign have delivered the desired outcomes and successfully demonstrated capabilities at par with global defense products, proven capabilities of the equipment are a major deciding factor while acquiring the assets. Following the conflict, Indian defense equipment is now in high demand, and enquiries have also increased from various recent rally in the defense sector was backed by expectations of new defense orders under emergency procurement. The development of new-age weapons is also expected to see strong growth over the next 1–3 government is expected to announce the process to fast-track the acquisition programme. In the longer term, the modernisation programme will pick up year's defense budget may see an increase in the allocation of funds towards modernisation, acquisition of assets, IAF fleet strength, etc.(Disclaimer: Recommendations, suggestions, views, and opinions given by experts are their own. Paks tax exemptions rise to USD 21 million, economic survey shows
Islamabad, Jun 10 (PTI) Tax exemptions to various sectors cost Pakistan more than USD 21 billion this year, a higher amount than the USD 17 billion the country is required to repay against its maturing commercial and bilateral external debt, according to the latest economic survey. Unveiled by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb on Monday, the Economic Survey of Pakistan 2024-25 documents various economic developments and indicators in a fiscal year. According to the document, the cost of tax exemptions surged to a record ₹ 5.8 trillion in the current fiscal year (2024-25), a rise of nearly ₹ 2 trillion in the first year of the present government from the previous fiscal year's ₹ 3.9 trillion. The Express Tribune newspaper reported that in dollar terms, the cost of tax losses was USD 21 billion, substantially higher than the USD 17 billion Pakistan is required to repay this year against its maturing commercial and bilateral external debt owed to China, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait. The survey showed that the jump in tax expenditure figure this year reflects a ₹ 1.96 trillion or 51 per cent increase, despite the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government removing several exemptions in its last budget. Despite multiple rounds of withdrawing tax concessions and exemptions, the amount has continued to rise annually, according to the economic survey. These exemptions, approved over the years, are protected under three distinct tax laws. The survey reported sales tax exemptions worth ₹ 4.3 trillion in the outgoing fiscal year, compared to ₹ 2.9 trillion in the previous year, a nearly 50 per cent rise. Income tax exemptions totalled ₹ 801 billion in the outgoing fiscal year, up 68 per cent from ₹ 477 billion last year, according to the Federal Board of Revenue's estimates. This increase came despite the government's decision to shift more tax burdens onto salaried individuals while sparing other sectors like retailers. Customs duty exemptions increased to ₹ 786 billion this fiscal year, up ₹ 243 billion or 45 per cent from ₹ 543 billion last year, the survey showed. The reported ₹ 5.8 trillion in "tax expenditures for 2025" casts doubt on the credibility of previously published losses, according to the report. Despite efforts by successive governments to scale back and eliminate tax expenditures, it continues to grow steadily. According to the newspaper, this indicates either the introduction of numerous hidden tax exemptions during the fiscal year or the understatement of the prior year's figures. There has been no extraordinary increase in economic activity to justify such a sharp spike in tax exemption costs, according to the report.

US-China handshake in London? Negotiators inch toward deal over rare earths, tech exports
US President Donald Trump has authorised Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's team to remove restrictions on the sales of chipmaking software, jet engine parts and ethane read more Top officials from the US and China will continue their meeting on Tuesday over an array of bilateral agreements, including the rare earth deal. The engagements began in London yesterday (June 10) as the two countries seek to sort out differences over Trump's tariffs. The talks are being led by China's Vice Premier He Lifeng, alongside US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. According to a report by The Washington Post, the US president has authorised Bessent's team to remove restrictions on the sales of chipmaking software, jet engine parts and ethane. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'Expecting handshakes' In an interview with American outlet CNBC, Kevin Hassett, Director of the National Economic Council at the White House, on Monday said that the US expectation was that 'immediately after the handshake, any export controls from the US will be eased, and the rare earths will be released in volume, and then we can go back to negotiating smaller matters." A deal to ease restrictions on critical minerals and advanced technologies would mark a major shift in the ongoing US-China economic and tech rivalry. Meanwhile, Trump has reportedly described Monday's talks as 'good'. US-China trade tensions Tensions between Washington and Beijing have soared since Trump took office, with both countries engaging in a tariffs war that took duties on each other's exports to three figures – an effective trade embargo. The Geneva pact to cool tensions temporarily brought new US tariffs on Chinese goods from 145 percent to 30 percent, and Chinese countermeasures from 125 percent to 10 percent. But Trump recently said China 'totally violated' the deal. A key issue was Beijing's shipments of rare earths, crucial to goods including electric vehicle batteries. Throughout its talks with Washington, China has also launched discussions with other trading partners – including Japan and South Korea – to try to build a united front to counter Trump's tariffs.
