Tender floated by Thiruvananthapuram corp to run modern abattoir
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The city corporation has retendered the operation and maintenance contract for the revamped modern slaughterhouse at Kunnukuzhy, following an unsuccessful bidding.
The civic body had planned to start the abattoir's trial run on World Environment Day. However, the move failed owing to cold response to the tender floated for the operation, maintenance and overall management of the newly established modern abattoir for large and small animals.
The reopening of the slaughterhouse after more than a decade of closure is in limbo as the corporation struggles to find a suitable agency. The project, aimed at ensuring hygienically slaughtered meat supply within the city, was built with modern mechanised systems and has a capacity to slaughter 50 to 75 small and large animals.
The new slaughterhouse is designed in a way to address environmental, public health, and animal welfare standards, and includes an effluent treatment plant (ETP), biogas units, chilling rooms, odour control systems and a rendering plant to handle waste. The agency getting the bid will be responsible to manage the abattoir for a period of 10 years on rent basis.
An corporation official said that this is a first-of-its-kind abattoir in the state and hence it was difficult to find a bidder. It is learned that only a single agency participated in the initial bid.
Meanwhile, the civic body is planning to put an end to illegal slaughter in the corporation area as soon as the new slaughterhouse is opened. The plan is to give registration to all meat butchers in the corporation for bringing animals to the slaughterhouse for custom slaughter.

Kuching South will turn ‘Trash to Hope' at World Environment Day event tomorrow

The event themed 'Trash to Hope' will take place at Dewan Masyarakat MBKS, Jalan Padungan from 9am to 12pm. Kuching South Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the event's theme reflects a collective aspiration to transform waste into meaningful resources through community-driven efforts. 'It is all about cultivating a mindset shift from seeing the waste as a problem to recognising its potential as a solution,' he told a press conference today. 'We always believe building a cleaner and greener future requires the participation of all of us, from young children to senior citizens, from households to businesses.' Among the highlights is the 'Bank Sampah Programme' recycling initiative, which includes the collection of electronic waste, used cooking oil, and other recyclable materials under MBKS' ongoing buyback programme. The Kuching Natural Farmers Market will also take part, bringing together 31 stalls offering farm-fresh produce, handmade eco-friendly products, and natural goods. Wee noted that the market, which initially began with fewer than 20 vendors, now features between 40 and 50 stalls and is held on the first and third Saturdays of every month. The celebration will also involve a donation drive in support of Kuching Food Aid Donation, where the public can contribute basic necessities to assist underprivileged communities in need. Soka Gakkai Malaysia (Sarawak branch) will also showcase its biennial 'Run for Peace' programme by introducing the concept of eco bricks. Visitors will be able to learn how to make eco bricks using recycled plastic and contribute to the construction of an eight-by-22-foot peace sculpture to be displayed at MBKS. There will also be the Eco Grand Fashion Face-Off, a creative fashion competition for children aged four to 12, organised by the MBKS Child Council as part of the council's ongoing involvement in the Unicef00 Child-Friendly City Initiative. Torfaen seed libraries encourage homegrown food
The new community scheme offers residents free vegetable seeds, with the aim of promoting sustainable food practices and boosting biodiversity. Councillor Sue Morgan, executive member for waste and sustainability, said: "These seed libraries are a fantastic example of how small, community-led initiatives can have a big impact. "They not only promote sustainable food practices and healthier lifestyles but also bring people together through a shared love of growing. "As it's World Environment Day, it's also important to recognise the environmental benefits of growing your own food, which not only eliminates the carbon emissions produced by transporting food, it increases local biodiversity." Each library offers a selection of seeds—such as stringless runner beans and mixed baby lettuce—free of charge. Residents are encouraged to grow their own produce and, when the season ends, save seeds from mature plants to replenish the libraries. This seed-sharing cycle supports the long-term sustainability of the project. Existing seed libraries can be found at locations including Able, Blaenavon Library, Blenheim Road Community Primary School, Cold Barn Farm, and Cwmbran Library. Four new sites will soon open at Garnteg Primary, Ponthir Village Hall, Cwmbran High School, and Coed Eva Primary. To celebrate the launch, a community planting event was held at Pontypool Market in March. Additional seed-saving workshops are planned later in the year. At the Able life skills centre in Cwmbran, participants help manage their local seed library and also run a tool library. The tool library offers long-handled and easy-grip gardening tools to make gardening more accessible. A similar service operates at Canddo at Panteg House. The seed libraries have been launched by the Torfaen Food Partnership with support from the Shared Prosperity Fund and the Welsh Government.
