KUCHING (June 13): The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) will celebrate World Environment Day tomorrow with sustainability-focused activities and community programmes.
The event themed 'Trash to Hope' will take place at Dewan Masyarakat MBKS, Jalan Padungan from 9am to 12pm.
Kuching South Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the event's theme reflects a collective aspiration to transform waste into meaningful resources through community-driven efforts.
'It is all about cultivating a mindset shift from seeing the waste as a problem to recognising its potential as a solution,' he told a press conference today.
'We always believe building a cleaner and greener future requires the participation of all of us, from young children to senior citizens, from households to businesses.'
Among the highlights is the 'Bank Sampah Programme' recycling initiative, which includes the collection of electronic waste, used cooking oil, and other recyclable materials under MBKS' ongoing buyback programme.
The Kuching Natural Farmers Market will also take part, bringing together 31 stalls offering farm-fresh produce, handmade eco-friendly products, and natural goods.
Wee noted that the market, which initially began with fewer than 20 vendors, now features between 40 and 50 stalls and is held on the first and third Saturdays of every month.
The celebration will also involve a donation drive in support of Kuching Food Aid Donation, where the public can contribute basic necessities to assist underprivileged communities in need.
Soka Gakkai Malaysia (Sarawak branch) will also showcase its biennial 'Run for Peace' programme by introducing the concept of eco bricks.
Visitors will be able to learn how to make eco bricks using recycled plastic and contribute to the construction of an eight-by-22-foot peace sculpture to be displayed at MBKS.
There will also be the Eco Grand Fashion Face-Off, a creative fashion competition for children aged four to 12, organised by the MBKS Child Council as part of the council's ongoing involvement in the Unicef00 Child-Friendly City Initiative.
The competition aims to promote environmental awareness through upcycled fashion, with cash prizes and certificates to be awarded to winners in two age categories.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian is expected to officiate at the event. lead MBKS wee hong seng World Environment Day

Mayor Wee urges collective action for sustainability at MBKS Environment Day

A group photo taken during the Eco Glam Fashion Face-Off competition held in conjunction with the MBKS 2025 Environment Day. KUCHING (June 14): Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng has called for collective and proactive efforts to preserve the environment in pursuit of a sustainable and prosperous future for generations to come. He said achieving this common goal requires close collaboration between the government, private sector, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and the wider community. 'World Environment Day, celebrated on June 5 every year, is not just a symbolic date, but a call for all of us to act. It reminds us that the dream of a sustainable future can only be achieved if all parties work together at all levels. 'This is not a time to just talk, we need to act to realise that dream,' he said when launching the MBKS 2025 Environment Day themed 'Trash to Hope' held at the MBKS Dewan Masyarakat here today. Wee urged the public to move beyond indifference and take real action to protect the environment, stressing the need for a mindset shift. 'From dumping (waste) to recycling, from not caring to acting,' he enthused. The mayor said MBKS has lined up a series of activities for the celebration, including the Eco Glam Fashion Face-Off, a competition for preschool and primary school children. He added that the competition was initiated by the MBKS Children's Council in support of the Child Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI) undertaken by the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef). 'A total of 24 participants aged between four and 12 took part in this competition, which not only fosters creativity but also instills awareness of recycling from a young age.' In addition, Wee said the community also had the chance to visit the Kuching Natural Farmer Market, with 31 stalls set up in the vicinity of the MBKS building, offering fresh agricultural produce, handmade products, plants and environmental-friendly goods. He said the market, which was inaugurated last year, is held twice a month to promote agricultural products that do not use chemical fertilisers and pesticides. He added that the council also collaborates with the Kuching Food Aid in organising a food donation programme to help the needy communities in and around the city. Wee also expressed appreciation to the creative group Naked Wonder, which has been working with MBKS since 2023 to promote environmental sustainability. Among their joint initiatives is the creation of 'The Turtle in the Ocean', the largest straw art installation in Malaysia, which was recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records. 'This artwork not only proves that recycled waste can be turned into something beautiful, but also plays an important role in raising public awareness about the importance of caring for the environment,' Wee added. environmental sustainability wee hong seng World Environment Day

Brunei celebrates World Environment Day and its youth leadership

Image from Borneo Bulletin/ANN BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (Borneo Bulletin/ANN): A change towards more responsible and sustainable management use of plastics, as well as environmentally friendly habits and awareness of the importance of maintaining environmental sustainability, is an important step in addressing the issue of plastic pollution, said Director of Environment, Parks and Recreation Martinah Tamit. She said this during the launch of the BELIA BRUNAS Programme and a Youth Environmental Leader Recognition Ceremony to commemorate World Environment Day celebration yesterday. She added, 'On June 5 every year, the global community including Brunei Darussalam celebrates World Environment Day which aims to raise public awareness about the importance of protecting the environment and encourage action from all levels of society to protect the environment and maintain its sustainability. The theme for this year's World Environment Day celebration is 'Beat Plastic Pollution'.' For decades, she stressed, 'plastics have contributed positively to almost every aspect of modern life such as in medicine and health, transportation, food, information technology and even leisure activities. However, the very durable nature of plastics that makes them so useful also makes them almost impossible to decompose naturally, causing pollution. In addition, the way plastics are produced, used and disposed by some who are not sensitive or lack knowledge of the importance of protecting the environment also has a negative impact.' She also introduced the BELIA BRUNAS Programme, a dedicated platform designed to empower youth in Brunei Darussalam to participate in impactful and long-term activities that contribute meaningfully to the country's environmental sustainability. Launched by the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe) under the Ministry of Development, the programme is divided into two phases: Phase 1, named the YouLEARn Programme, short for 'Youth Learn, Empower and Advocate for a Resilient Environment', and Phase 2, the YouGAIN Programme, an acronym for 'Youth Green Actions for Innovation'. Meanwhile, among the first recipients of the Youth Environmental Leader Recognition Awards were co-founder of Green Brunei Khairunnisa Ash'ari; founder of BruWILD Liaw Lin Ji; founder of Zero Waste Brunei Noor Hafizah Rashid; and founder of Sustainable Ocean Alliance Brunei Shaima Misli. Minister of Development Dato Seri Setia Awang Muhammad Juanda Abdul Rashid, the guest of honour, launched the programme and presented the Youth Environmental Leader Recognition Awards. The ceremony also saw a special video message from Director of the Asia-Pacific Regional Office of the United Nations Environment Programme Dr Dechen Tsering, focusing on rethinking plastic usage through youth engagement and promoting a circular economy approach. The ceremony concluded with a visit to the Youth Environmental Exhibition. In conjunction with this year's World Environment Day, JASTRe has also organised a number of initiatives including the 'Let's Donate Blood' campaign scheduled for June 10 at OneCity Shopping Centre, in collaboration with the Blood Donation Centre of Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Hospital and the Nationwide Recycling Day (Upcycling Edition) on June 22. – Borneo Bulletin/ANN
