Warwick Farm preview: Trainer John Thompson expects Hellbent On You to keep her consistent form going

News.com.au06-05-2025

Trainer John Thompson has plenty of admiration for consistent mare Hellbent On You and expects her to make her presence felt again when she returns to Warwick Farm.
The four-year-old mare kicked off her campaign with a strong closing win from Formal at Hawkesbury before returning to metropolitan company with a neck third behind Seascape on the Kensington.
Hellbent On You then finished a nose second behind progressive filly Candlewick over 1200m at Warwick Farm on April 16.
'I have been very pleased with her runs this campaign. She is a very reliable mare,' said Thompson.
'As rule, when mares are in form they tend to hold it and she seems to be in good order since her last run.'

The daughter of Hellbent has drawn barrier 7 in the TAB Handicap (1300m) with top apprentice Braith Nock to continue his association with her.
'Barrier doesn't really matter to her. She is pretty tractable,' he said.
'If she draws wide, she can get back or if she draws well, she can sit closer. Having that versatility helps with her consistency.
'It's a straight run to the corner at Warwick Farm so you can be three-deep.
'Braith is a ripper. He is very good jockey.
'He is getting better all the time because he us having success and he will keep riding winners.
'I'd say he's the leading apprentice this year.'
Thompson expects stablemate Clear Proof to bounce back to form in the Traffic Warden @ Darley Handicap (1300m).
The son of Justify caused a boilover on debut when he won at $101 on the Kensington last July and followed up with a second to Gatsby's in the Listed Rosebud at Rosehill.
He finished own the track at his next two starts before a spell and a lingering issue has impacted his two runs this time in but Thompson feels he is over that now.
'He needed gelding. His first couple of runs were good but he was very colty,' he said
'We persisted a little bit because he showed ability but in the end, Chad Schofield and Craig Williams both said, he needs gelding.
'Unfortunately, this time in, he pulled a front plate off in his second trial and trod on the toe clip.
Clear Proof at any old price! 🤯

'I thought he was right at Warwick Farm last start. He was sound when he trotted up but under pressure in the race, Nash (Rawiller) said he was still feeling it a bit.
'He wasn't lame or sore but just wasn't giving a hundred per cent.
'He's had another couple of weeks of foot growth and he is right now. I would expect a big improvement from him.
Thompson's has two two-year-olds entered for the meeting but is likely to scratch Vingt Neuf Noir from the fillies edition, the Schweppes Plate (1000m) after she drew barrier 13.
'I will probably save her until next week and go to Scone for the Inglis Challenge,' he said.
'She is a really nice filly and one for the black book.
'She has been trialling nicely and will run well when she races but will improve with the more racing she does.'
He will saddle up Ellismayne who makes his debut in the colts and geldings division, the Vinnie Three-Time Champion Sire Plate (1000m).
'He's a nice horse. The 1000m might be a bit short for him but he is a horse to follow,' he said
'He always showed that had something but he just needed gelding. 'This is his first preparation as a gelding and you can see the difference in his attitude. He is more professional.'

Having progressed through his country grades in good style, trainer Donna Scott is hoping her talented gelding Villasaurus can take the next step and measure up in town.
The lightly-raced four-year-old was a TAB Highway winner at Rosehill last November but faces a stronger opposition when he steps out in the Drinkwise Mile Benchmark 72 (1600m).
Villasaurus was impressive winning a Class 3 Handicap at his home track of Albury three weeks ago to earn himself a trip to Sydney.
After settling behind the leader, he got a run between horses on straightening and was eased down to score by over a length from Exceedingly Hot.
'We knew if he won it meant he was no longer eligible for Highways but it would give us a mark on where he is at, said Scott.
'He won well and with his rating in the country, we are limited as to what races he can run in.
'Now we will look to set the bar a bit higher and test him hence why he is in a Benchmark 72 in town.

'Obviously, you don't get the Chris Waller horses in Highways where he has five runners in this race.
'We will get another guide on where we are at with him.'
The son of Villermont hasn't had much luck go his way this preparation and has been restricted to just two starts since first trialling at Benalla on February 17.
He was trapped three-wide without cover when resuming in the SDRA Country Championships Qualifier at Wagga on March 1 where he went down by a length when third to Canny Hell.
He was then seven weeks to his next run at Albury after missing the Country Championships Wildcard at Goulburn on March 23.
'Fitness probably just told on him in the end being first-up in the Qualifier,' said Scott.
'If I knew was going to draw the outside barrier, I probably would have given him another barrier trial leading into it.
'I thought we were a chance in the Wildcard but the truck broke down halfway to Goulburn and we missed the race.
'He has had a bit of a muck around preparation but hopefully all the bad luck is behind us now.'

Defending Inter Dominion winner Don Hugo takes first step towards his title defence with a return at Menangle

Luke McCarthy is a realist. The champion NSW horseman will take his stable star Don Hugo to Brisbane to defend his Inter Dominion crown and knows the bar has been raised. That's because, unlike in last year's Menangle Inter Dominion final, Don Hugo will have one of the greatest pacers this part of the world has seen in Leap To Fame to contend with. There's another factor niggling away at McCarthy, too. 'This year's (Inter Dominion) final is over 3157m and that plays to Leap To Fame's greatest strength, his stamina,' McCarthy said. 'Over the sprint distances, Don Hugo can be too sharp for him, but the longer the races, the harder he is to beat. 'We're talking about an out-and-out champion, one of the best pacers I've seen in Leap To Fame. 'We've beaten him before and I've got huge faith in my horse, but I'm also aware of the enormity of the challenge ahead in a series run in his backyard and a final over that sort of distance.' Don Hugo, who returns from a spell in a 2300m race at Menangle tonight, has clashed with Leap To Fame just three times and trails him 1-2. McCarthy's star ran fifth in February's Hunter Cup when Leap To Fame was second, then turned the tables when he led throughout to win the Miracle Mile at Menangle on March 8 where Leap To Fame was a brave second. Don Hugo WINS the G1 Inter Dominion Pacers Final & smashes the track record in the process! ðŸ† â€' SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) December 14, 2024 • Ka Ying Rising locked in for The Everest as slot details confirmed Leap To Fame then produced arguably his greatest performance yet when he sat outside and crushed Don Hugo at their latest meeting in the $NZ1 million Race by Betcha in Cambridge, NZ on April 4. But McCarthy said Don Hugo performed below his best and was found to have a virus after the race. 'Leap To Fame was just too good, but Don Hugo is much better than he showed that night,' he said. 'He's thrived during the break, had a trial and private workout at Menangle, and he's raring to go this week. 'I plan to back him up the following week and then take him straight into the opening round of (Inter Dominion) heats on July 5.' Leap To Fame, who resumed from a break with a narrow but impressive Albion Park win last Saturday, will change tact when he backs up tomorrow (Saturday) night. Trainer-driver Grant Dixon has opted to run him from a 30m handicap over 2138m. It will be just his second standing-start race in 65 starts. He won the other at Albion Park back on June 8, last year.

Dubbo best bets, inside mail for Friday, June 6, 2025

Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. Racenet and The Daily Telegraph form analyst Shayne O'Cass provides his best bets and quaddie analysis for Dubbo on Friday. The Form: Complete NSW Racing thoroughbred form, including video replays and all you need to know about every horse, jockey and trainer. Find a winner here! ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ DUBBO TIPS BEST BET Race 1 No. 1: FUEL THE JET Six-year-old having only his second start but it talented. Drawn one. NEXT BEST Race 2 No. 2: BLUE DE BEERS Local juvenile on debut from a top yard armed with some excellent trials. VALUE BET Race 7 No. 11: CUMNOCK Has the lowest rating in the field but is a local on the way up. QUADDIE Race 5: 1, 10 Race 6: 2, 6, 11, 7 Race 7: 1, 11 Race 8: 1, 2 JOCKEY TO FOLLOW KODY NESTOR could skip out to an early lead in the TAB Jockey Challenge. INSIDE MAIL - DUBBO RACE 1: WESTSIDE HOTEL COUNTRY BOOSTED SHOWCASE 3YO & UP MAIDEN HANDICAP 1000m FUEL THE JET (1) was bred to win the AJC Derby; his sire Starcraft did as did another one of his close relations, Dr Grace. Fuel The Jet has spent plenty of time in the hanger bearing in mind that this is the six-year-old's second start. Has talent, trialled well. ANDALE (2) makes his debut at home from a good draw. Trialled well three times, two of them here at Dubbo. Vormista's son, BEAUMISTA (4) sent out good signs first-up. Hails from an astute stable. Bet: Fuel The Jet to win RACE 2: KINGS HALL JEWELLERS SHOWCASE SILVER GOBLET - 2YO HANDICAP 1100m BLUE DE BEERS (2) is a Clint Lundholm-trained local dealt the visitors draw but there are only nine runners so it could have been worse. Both trials have been fantastic but he is giving away race experience to all rivals. The only winner in the Goblet is JOSEPHINE (3) who beat the Star Kingdom winner, Gemologist at Gunnedah. REGAL PROBLEM (6) ran third to Hidden Motive on debut. Bet: Blue De Beers to win, quinella 2, 3 RACE 3: PRECISION HEALTH CARE SHOWCASE SUPER MAIDEN PLATE 1300m LORD VETTORI (4) could be saved for another venue on another day given the draw. In his absence, all roads lead to CURRUMBIN ALLEY (1) who is bred to be a miler, maybe even more, so all credit to the son of Vancouver (out of a Savabeel mare) for his half-length second at Gunnedah over 1250m. Drawn 1, 1300m and every extra metre assists. GRANDINI (10) was passed late first-up by Zelestial who might be above average. Bet: Lord Vettori to win or of scratched, Currumbin Alley to win RACE 4: DUBBO RSL CLUB WINTER COUNTRY CLASSIC QUALIFIER CG&E BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP 1300m SPEEDY HENRY (2) has two wins and a third from four starts. He was $3 in a TAB Highway on April 26 at Randwick and had excuses for what was still a pretty creditable run. He's not an outright 'good thing' here but it would be hard to make a case for something to beat him. The one most likely, if at all, is the Brett Robb-trained WASTED DAYS (5) who might well go around later in the day as an emergency (Race 6). INVASIVE (1) has come back really well. Bet: Speedy Henry to win RACE 5: DUBBO RSL CLUB WINTER COUNTRY CLASSIC QUALIFIER F&M BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP 1300m ZELESTIAL (10) came to Australia with two runs in Ireland on her C.V, the first was a fifth to subsequent Group 3 winner Givemethebeatboys. The Lyle Chandler-trained daughter of Zoustar trialled like a bomb before her winning debut at Tamworth where she got a great ride. Scratched from Taree on Thursday to run here. WILLINGA KARISMA (1) has the home ground advantage. She's never been closer to a win. MISSY MOSS (9) has a bad draw but Bullock will help with that. Bet: Zelestial to win RACE 6: WESTERN PLAINS AUTOMOTIVE COUNTRY BOOSTED SHOWCASE CLASS 1 HANDICAP 1100m PRESSNELL (2) is a genuinely talented son of Press Statement, hence the name, think Max. This big, bold gelding has a win, a second and two fifths from his four starts. This was already a very winnable race for the Mack Griffith-trained galloper but his chances went up when he drew 2 and Bullock booked. SORRENTO PALACE (6) aims to, and can, snap a sequence of three consecutive seconds, keeping in mind that the last two were by very narrow margins indeed. Bet: Pressnell to win, quinella 2, 6, box trifecta 2, 6, 11, 7 RACE 7: FARDELLS HEAVY HAULAGE & CRANE HIRE SHOWCASE BENCHMARK 82 HANDICAP 1000m CUMNOCK (11) has the lowest Benchmark rating in this race; he's on 60, the ones at the top are both on 77. That said, he is a last start winner on the move. Was to run in the Highway on Saturday but is way down the list so run here instead where he is two from two at the track and trip. IRON HAT (1) has won six races with 12 placings. Famously unlucky at times, the Jan Bowen-trained chestnut has mixed and matched it in better races than this. ZAKOR (4) is good enough to win most country sprints; this one included. Bet: Cumnock each-way, quinella 1, 11 RACE 8: EVERGREEN TURF | ELITE SAND & SOIL SHOWCASE BENCHMARK 82 HANDICAP 1400m RHYTHM IS A DANCER (2) has won seven races in 27 starts with eight placings which is a fine achievement on his, and trainer Brett Cavanough's, behalf. Among those wins are a Country Cup at Scone and a Spring Cup at Tamworth where he beat Russley Crown each time as it happens. Walked in at Inverell last start. This is harder if only for the presence of another good, old trusty Scone resident namely THE DRAMATIST (1). That said, he needs things to pan out for him but when they do, he's city class. Bet: Rhythm Is A Dancer to win

Racing Confidential: Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Wayne Harris recovers from spinal surgery

Wayne Harris, the former champion jockey and popular Sky Thoroughbred Central form expert, is recovering slowly after another major spinal surgery. Harris has had ongoing health issues for some years and been forced to undergo many operations. But he has repeatedly shown remarkable courage to continually overcome his health setbacks. His many friends in the racing industry are hoping he returns to the racetrack very soon. A naturally gifted jockey, Harris won the 1979 Golden Slipper while still an apprentice on Century Miss and later in his career rode Jeune to win the 1994 Melbourne Cup before increasing weight and health problems forced him into retirement. My thoughts to former Jockey Wayne Harris - notably missing from last few weeks covering @kemblaraces - @SkyRacingAU - hopefully he shows improvement soon and we see him back being involved with the Racing he knows and loves. @skyjasonwitham — Anne Munsie (@munsieanne) June 3, 2025 • â– â– â– â– â– MICHAEL Wood, Royal Randwick 's respected track manager, is now in charge of Sydney's four racetracks, effectively immediately. I think it also shows the ATC's commitment to providing quality racetracks and training surfaces.'' ATC's Head of Racing and Wagering Nevesh Ramdhani confirmed Wood's appointment on Thursday. 'Michael has a wealth of experience and knowledge around racing and track management, and we are delighted to extend his role,'' Ramdhani said.
